The Lost Daughter (2021)
I truly expected more, bummer
I recall this was supposed to be a total female driven film, from script to direction, through a female lens so I was excited to see this and what a way to end a horrible year, horribly! As a mom I appreciate seeing the dark realities of being an adult, a parent, all while losing yourself or not and how we are the sum of not just our choices but those around us. However, Lena young and older was absolutely unpalatable and pretentious. I get that she felt her aspirations were being sidelined as so many of us women experience. How trying to even have a moment of intimacy alone or feel independent of just being a mother is nearly impossible to separate yourself which is why I think she chose a road less traveled by most mothers but we get little background on how "supposedly " great her 3 years gone were and how she just magically made good with her daughters after leaving? Life has thrown me many surprises and with age my reactions are far different from what they might have been years before but older Leda at least in the film still seems like she learned very little or maybe was quite honest when she said she was just often mean and selfish? Also I get not sexualizing an affair the way most male writers and directors would onscreen but even her affair with someone she admired seemed so boring that it made me wonder why did she even bother? There was no need for nudity but it felt so lifeless. Unless this was her remembering it that way in regret if not then those scenes fell horribly flat. I felt more for the character of Nina because although confused and obviously feeling trapped in her own way, I would have probably had the same reaction as Nina but with a lot more to say. The ideas were there but almost no ability to connect. And yes, as a woman who doesn't care about my own likeability very much because women are often taught to seek approval and likability so again is this what they were going for because if so they nailed that one. Watched it yes, recommending it, never.

Don't get the negative reviews
No spoilers just surprised how many people seem to already need some help in reprogramming their brains if they gave this such horrible ratings. Perhaps you have fallen into the Hollywood blockbuster, social media hive mind and need everything spelled out perfectly for you because sometimes beauty or originality can only truly be appreciated by those who still retain some original thought, a thirst for knowledge and stimulation beyond their smart devices ;)
