Dalíland (2022)
Fun to watch
I expected to be bored but actually really enjoyed the movie. Considering it had a limited budget, I think they did a great job in pretty much every department. Set visuals are great, camera and editing too, music and sound is perfect, story flows fast unlike in some other biographical dramas, but what this film really relies on are the actors - all of the main actors performances are absolutely brilliant. I especially enjoyed Ben Kingsley who at times managed to make me both laugh and be sad at the same time which felt like a new emotion to me when watching a movie and for that I thank him (also the writers). After watching I can't imagine anyone else ever playing Dalí. Great watch!
The Gilded Age (2022)
Downtown Abbey 2
The bar was set high with Downtown Abbey, so it's a difficult to make a better TV show, but this one comes close. It's very watchable, the opulence with architecture and costumes is even better now and there is much more intrigue which makes everything fun even though you feel like you've seen it before. Characters and their dynamics are very similar but the stakes are higher, so retrospectively Downtown Abbey almost looks relaxed even though it didn't feel like it back then. The long opening episode fulfills its purpose by drawing you in and introducing the characters in an entertaining way, I'd rate it 9/10, the remaining episodes are solid 8/10. The only thing I would have liked better is the story which could have surely been more suspensful with some good twists, now most things are predictable so I mostly kept watching because everything else is perfect including incredible performances from all the actors.
2012 (2009)
Wow factor is present here
Great catastrophic movie that checks all the boxes and more. Unless you're educated about physics, space or geology of course, but then you can't watch any catastrophic movies. Here you'll find great characters, good acting in most cases, incredible effects that are better than such movies even in 2023, sound that pops, editing that provides nonstop action and the best possible ending in this category of films. Watching this on a big screen on 4K blu-ray and with a sound system is a cool experience :). Also why can't we do great special effects anymore? This is one of the last movies that can make you go wow, compare that with 2022's Moonfall and you realize how lucky we got when this was released.
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
Unfulfilled Potential
I wanted to like this film so much, but it ended up being a cheap copy of Tarantino (pick any of his films). Too bad, because Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo were great in their roles, but it wasn't enough to overcome the feeling of watching a soulles Tarantino - which doesn't make any sense, because most of his films are the epitome of creativity and every second counts, but here the time drags on and you try to pull through even with the uninteresting Dakota Johnson. But then Thor Chris Hemsworth comes in and you know it's an acting nightmare ride down from there. Overall I recommend to watch the movie if you have a streaming subscription, but I don't recommend to buy it - you'll regret it unless you're 12 and are only starting with movies, then it might have some appeal.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Not a bad movie once you take the Matrix concept completely out of the equation
Two stars in my rating are for the characters I love and adore so much - Neo and Trinity. Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne-Moss are great in their roles under the circumstances. Everything else about the movie saddened me. If you expect to be taken to the world you know from the first three movies, you'll be disappointed because you'll see dull and generic movie making that can be experienced by watching literally any other action or sci-fi movie. Effects, fighting, script, camera and even acting of everyone else but the two actors are all average or below average. Nothing in this film will blow you away, surprise or even make feel good. I wanted to like it so much, but I found myself being bored pretty much the whole time. Do watch the movie, it's nice to see a bit of Neo and Trinity again, but please don't expect much. All that being said, there is one good thing, Resurrections made me cherish the memories of the first three films dearly.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Surprisingly good
I was a bit sceptical at the beginning of the film because some of the later Texas chainsaw movies were dull and not even brutal, but overall this is a fun and modern reboot that gives the franchise a breath of new life. I especially liked that leatherface finally has more personality, and actors are less boring than in previous installments. If you like horror movies, you're gonna love this one. My rating compares with other horror movies, not with movies in general, of course :).
The Lovely Bones (2009)
Beautifully Done!
I was expecting a movie deep below the average and what I just watched was such a masterpiece! I delayed watching it for years because I didn't hear a single positive thing and yet I couldn't be more wrong - it is good. Unless all you like are superhero movies, then I cannot imagine you will hate this. Highly recommended!
Elysium (2013)
Expectations Not Fulfilled
This really started on a promising note but soon it became apparent this is a flop. It feels like a 5th Element movie with average acting, surprisingly bad plot filled with holes and not-really-great visual effects. I was looking forward to seeing this movie for a few years and somehow managed to build up high expectations, not even sure why. Equilibrium or Gattaca are much better movies that are not trying to be cheap popcorn flicks like this.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Very Average Movie With Mostly Disappointing Cast
The only thing I like about this movie is the topic which is, very loosely, inspired by some true events. However, the script seems to be lazy in details and they saved themselves a lot of work by extremely simplifying real-world processes and taking enormous shortcuts. Because of all these details, the movie felt unrealistic and like a complete fantasy which is a shame.
Also, the main protagonist and her partner are unlikeable, not just in the sense of their character role but that you do not even enjoy seeing them in their bad roles. I mostly felt like I am wasting time by watching these characters on screen all the time and wished the movie was more about Jennifer who is played by Dianne Wiest - probably the only likeable performance in the movie.
The ending was just as lazily done as the whole movie and did not bring any remediation. Do not get me wrong, technically speaking, the movie feels nice, fluid and done well, it is just the script and actors that you will probably find so boring.
I can appreciate satire, comedy, drama and difficult movies but this does not hit the mark in any of these categories and kind of just taps a little into everything. If you already saw this, you can probably confirm it was okay to watch but did not bring you any joy or a lesson to learn from. If you did not yet see it, do not even bother.
Fear the Walking Dead (2015)
Fear the Boring Death
I had medium hopes for this TV show but unfortunately it's just plain boring. There aren't any good twists, almost no action, actors are unrelatable to the point of dislikeable except Kim Dickens but even there you can see insufficient direction and boring script and the overall story is completely dull. I recommend pretty much any other TV show to watch.
King Kong (2005)
Absolute Blockbuster Magic
I remember seeing this in 2005 as a 14 y.o. and it completely blew me away. However today I rewatched and realized just how good it is. A movie about a giant ape couldn't sound more boring to me but they managed to make this a ticking timebomb with nonstop action and top notch cinematography. Just make sure you have a good home theatre setup to do at least a bit of justice to the movie.
Buried (2010)
Boring
It did not entertain me to spend 90 minutes watching a mentally unstable person with a bellow average intelligence talking on the phone having useless, inefficient conversations or waiting to get connected or waiting for someone to pick up a phone and they never do. Somehow, they managed to make a movie where you do not relate to the character, the suspense is non-existent and it all feels very unreal. The idea about this movie is good but it is all shot in such a way that you just do not feel almost any suspense and are mostly bored. The physics in this movie are extremely unrealistic and also the way technology (the phone) behaves is not realistic (with the "looking for the signal" thing etc.). I think you should spare your time and not watch this but it has 7/10 from the majority of people so I guess someone actually enjoyed this. There are more illogical things in the movie but I do not want to write spoilers so see for yourself how many will "face-palm" you. I kind of liked the ending though but it did not make up for the first 89 minutes of boredom. Also, I think they should have chosen a different actor for this one and also all the voice actors should be punched in the face for giving such bad performance.
[Rec] (2007)
Unappealing
I was hoping for a good horror flick but were disappointed. Fortunately, because of all the good reviews, it is probably just me and you will enjoy this anyway. Good for you. But even though I watched home alone, in the dark of the night as I usually do with horror films, I was not scared. There were very few moments of light suspense. The camera is horrid even for a POV film. The 1998 Blair Witch has ecstatic camera work compared to this. Almost all the actors and especially the main characters are unbearably bad in their roles. They do not feel genuine and their constant shouting and screaming it annoying and out of place in most of the scenes. I just wished they would just die as soon as possilble so I could focus on the suspense build up but that was in vain - until the very last second of the movie, there is constant screaming and unpleasant voice of the main character. Most of the deaths are the most predictable clichés and characters behaving in seriously dumb ways. It felt like watching just a bunch of people with dementia. There was not a single calm person in the movie, nobody who could bring in a minute of silence or just actually think about the situation. As I said, everyone seems to be enjoying this film. So go ahead and see for yourself.
The Beach (2000)
Intriguing
I recommend you see this movie. It was one of those films that I have kept on my watchlist for a long time but never really wanted to give it a try because people said it was not really good. I think if you see this film alone and just try to enjoy it; it will take you on a suspenseful ride where you look forward with tension to what will happen next. I did not get bored. The film is so well done that I didn't get distracted at all, it just kind of flows naturally and you are really attached to the characters. You might feel excitement, anger, fear, sadness. There have been a few places where I thought the characters should have done something else - but that is me, someone would probably have acted the way they did. Overall, this movie touched me though not in a sad way; it just felt really convincing and makes you think about it. Good actors, obviously good crew, interesting setting. Well done and recommended. I didn't read the book so can't elaborate on that.
Kidnap (2017)
Suspenseful
This movie struck me on a personal note but overall it is a very well done movie full of great acting, camera and several extremely suspenseful scenes. I gave this rating only to a few movies but this one is so believable and could be easily based on a true story (I bet something like that happened or will happen somewhere in the world at some point). I watched it at home on a laptop and still enjoyed it a lot even though I missed it in cinemas. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to see a real and entertaining film. After seeing Suicide Squad yesterday and having my brain melt and pour out of my ears, this is really a refreshing flick with a real feeling. Thanks filmmakers and sorry it did not have a larger success at the box office. It should.
Suicide Squad (2016)
The best thing about this movie is probably a product placement by Samsung
I liked the performance of Jared Leto. Will Smith is pretty much the same as in any other movie but he is a good actor though in a pointless, not entertaining movie. The make-up is obviously good (especially if it won an Oscar) but you don't get to enjoy it much. The movie is completely predictable, performances of most actors average, in some cases below average. I was disappointed with Margot Robbie, she is a good actress but this role was for someone else. Only after watching the movie and reading the cast and crew, I realized there is no Mila Kunis in this but to me previously unknown Cara Delevingne. I think at 21 years old, I am too old for this movie, it was probably aimed at teenagers and kids. There is no violance, it all feels pale and plain boring. Overall, very disappointed. But the movie is a huge hit according to box office and I find it kind of sad that so many good films have no success but a thing like this does.
Tickled (2016)
Boring even for a documentary
Sadly, I was not surprised, interested, educated nor entertained by this documentary. The pace is really slow, so slow that I ate everything that was not expired in my fridge and had strong cravings to do anything but watch the documentary. But I pulled through.
I felt like we were shown only some convenient parts of communication between the two conflicted parties that the creator(s) wanted us to see so we side with them. Also, the reporter was sometimes rude and a bit creepy, he could handle everything with respect towards everyone and still get the same interview without playing a pushy and annoying reporter.
Overall I don't know what to say, I feel like watching 90 minutes of people having a dinner and not talking. Basically we are just affirmed that some people act stupid and fire you off your position at the college football team because they saw you getting tickled for money in a video. But I guess we know some people act like this and we should focus on them stopping this kind of behavior but the maker(s) of the documentary didn't even try to contact the coach to hear his explanation or to dig into why he did it, they just kept repeating that tickling for money happens because some people like to watch this kind of stuff. I think I've never been so confused about a documentary. Of course if there was abductions and forced tickling, that would be worth a look, but everyone taking part in that practice knew what they are going into - getting tickled for cash fully clothed.
I gave it 2 out of 10 because it is technically okay, there are no total flops in the tech department. Couldn't find more to praise. For me it was not worth 90 minutes and cannot recommend spending time watching it to anyone unless you have a tickling fetish of course :))
Basic Instinct 2 (2006)
Expected a flop
Tonight, I watched the Basic Instinct and Basic Instinct 2 right after it. Both for the very first time.
The first one got me excited as the actors were great and the story pretty cool. A great crime movie. I knew about the bad reputation the second installment has and expected a flop. But I did not get one. I got a movie full of honestly great actors, great environments and a great plot. The camera, sound, music, editing, actors, suspense... Everything is on top. I loved the movie and frankly have no idea why it is rated bad and why was it nominated for razzie awards. I guess you have to have a black sheep every year to point a finger at and unfortunately for the Basic Instinct 2 this movie was that black sheep in 2006.
I rated Basic Instinct 9/10 because I was really entertained and I am rating the second one also 9/10 because I was entertained as well and even a bit more because the movie is more current to me as it was shot in 2006 and I am a younger person. Hats off to the makers of this movie and the actors. Highly recommended to anyone interested in crime movies or thrillers.
31 (2016)
Sad to say this but it is disappointing
The story is normal for a horror movie and most of the actors are good but everything else just sucks.
The camera work is shitty because when there is action, you cannot see anything as it moves like crazy so they cover up the fact that they did not have a better budget or people to orchestrate better killing scenes.
Also the first half of the movie is really boring, fortunately the second half is kind of watchable.
Even though the actors are good, some of them are extremely unlikeable for their characters and should have played either a different role in the film or not be in it at all. I think actors of some of the good side and bad side characters should have been switched.
I expected a bit more from Rob Zombie as I loved his Devil's Rejects.
This is not really a review or at least not a good one but I just wanted so summarize my thoughts after watching it to kind of warn others not to expect too much of a horror movie. You will not be afraid unless you are 10 years old and the gore in this film is really low level, I am really surprised it is rated R. Anyways, those are my thoughts and I recommend to try some other movie.
