The Sixth Sense (1999)
I got the ending before in the theaters, but good film
The Sixth Sense has a surprise ending ( many films will use this in the following years) but it's not all about the ending ( in contrary to certain other films that I will not name to avoid spoiling). The story on itself is very interesting but the ending is the cherry on the pie. Many who saw it the first time were in disbelief: is this right...? After re-watching it several times...yes it is. The plot is almost watertight. I suppose if you want to you can always find tiny little mistakes but I haven't found any big ones.
The Sixth Sense is unbelievably well cast: Bruce Willis delivers his 2nd best performance( 12 Monkeys is his best), debutant Haley Joel Osment is excellent( his performance in A. I is also excellent, other movies of his were mostly disappointing performances), Toni Colette delivers the first in a long series of Oscar-worthy performances (also see The Night Listener, The Hours, Little Miss Sunshine ao. ) and the performance of Donnie Wahlberg musn't be forgotten even though he only gets 3 minutes of screen time. Olivia Williams may be the only lesser performance in the lead cast but she still does an OK job.
We can see several Shyamalan's trademarks for the first time: He uses very natural colors( brown, white, gray, beige, green) in the interiors and clothing. Another trademark for his work is the fragmentary use of a rich red color to break with the dull colors in the background. He doesn't overuse the red so it preserves its power. We can also see Shyamalan's excellent use of colors in The Village ( even more then in the sixth sense): red stands for evil, misfortune and fear while yellow stands for weakness. The Village is M. Night's third best film in my opinion (Unbreakable is the one that closest approaches TSS brilliance). It's also unbelievably well-acted, the story is strong, the settings are beautiful...definitely worth watching ( if hope you have seen it but if you haven't...you know what to do). It's a bit under-appreciated on IMDb but don't let that fool you.
I'm no direction expert but I found it to be brilliant. The brilliance lies in the details; the excellent use of mirrors and shadows, the lighting, eccentric camera viewpoints,...it's a delight for a filmenthousiast( like yours truly) to watch. You can feel Shyamalan is both writer and director; he knows exactly what to do with the material and which camera shot would be best for which scene.
David and Goliath (2015)
A nice retelling of the Noah story
I honestly did not know what to expect from the film. As a recent convert to Christianity (from Buddhism), I am not truthfully that literate in the scriptures, forgive me.
I watched this movie with my wife and we both enjoyed it enormously. It was a very interesting retelling of the David and the giant story that brought home some of the anguish of all those involved in this triumphant tale of a boy up against what they say are all the 'odds' at work against the lad. We were very engaged with the story from the start, which was told sensitively and emotionally, especially towards the end. Both graphically and artistically you have really good shots. Some of them are completely weird but weird is fun. Without spoilers there is an amazing "stop-motion" sequence that even if you don't want to waste money or time watching this movie, you should see it. Cinematography is breath-taking. Each moment has been captured with brilliance. Editing is perfect. Action-Sequences & Graphics are good. Make-Up is well-done, as well.
I loved the David and Goliath story of the Bible and I found all the actors well chosen for their parts. The actor playing David gives an outstanding performance as David as do his two brothers who are the real stars of the film, I thought. One of the most touching scenes towards the end of the film involves these two actors.
The film is slow paced, which I love, and the storytelling by the filmmaker is just my cup of tea.
Now that I've seen the film then I will definitely buy it on Blu-ray and it will be added to my special reserve of top-notch films that I will love to watch again.
My enjoyment of this film was only marred by the rather brush and hurried ending. As I watched it then I kept thinking of how it must have felt to slay this bully giant. It's OK to take the entire family to.
This film more than any other proves to me that I cannot accept the judgement of others when evaluating a film; I am so glad I don't listen to movie critics or critics in general - so many of them are mean-spirited and quite evil.
The Tuxedo (2002)
Great action film with Jackie
Is this an Oscar film? No. Artistic? No. Great script? Uh-uh.
Huge fun for young fans and old? Yes! I love Jackie Chan movies because Jackie Chan loves making movies, and his energy and vigor are clearly up on the screen. I think Jackie & Jennifer work better than Jackie & Chris (although I think Chris Tucker's one of the funniest actors ever) because Jackie and Jennifer have a similar energy and laidback style.
I also love the wonderful dynamics of action that Jackie is the master of. Great human being as well.
The James Bond guy is a great actor (Patriot) and I hope he works in American movies more often. Very cute movie! Something you can take your 10-year-old kid brother to without worrying. 8 out of 10.
Chin gei bin (2003)
action flick in the vein of Jackie
Great vampire action film with Jackie Chan. Well directed although not by Stanley Tong who usually directs Jackie's films.
Really cool action movie where super-Jackie Chan adds his usual spectacular kicking and acrobatics. This one, contrarily to the average, actually HAS a plot, and the acting is not as bad as in other movies. But going to the full-show style, few excellent scenes including some wonderful fights against the vampires. Very funny, super butt-kicking and super-Jackie!
Jackie Chan is the future of action films said Luke Perry and I agreed with him them. It proved right.
