The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Sitting with the Thinker
If you love philosophy blend with action and science fiction this is for you. Neo and his men are up against the machines and evil Agent Smiths, as Neo also must save his love too. The soundtrack screams 2000s with names from the era of the 2000s European VIVA and Music Television dance hall channels. In two hours you get lot of action from a highway chase to an army of Agent Smiths. MTV Awards also made an parody of the Matrix Reloaded back then. At the same year Matroix Revolutions was out as the fourth movie awaited ion 2021. It seems like the Matrix sequels are going unplugged after the failure of the fourth Matrix movie.
Marmaduke (2022)
SOS
14 years after the Marmaduke live action movie Marmaduke made so many rental DVD money for some reason that an animated movie was made for Netflix. Marmaduke and his family first bombs at an dog show, and then the winner takes it all the big finale in an NYC look a like city with dogs from UK, France and more. The movie takes all the dog country stereotypes, and rents from Youtube trends that faded away 10 years ago. The movie are only recommended for 2010s nostalgia blinded grownups and the kids too that is eager to get their real life dogs. Else you can skip this and watch the Eurovision Song Contest movie with your family this is funnier even with an Icelandic Elf.
PAW Patrol (2013)
Paw Patrol, Paw Patrol
Paw Patrol along with Bluey and Scooby Doo are some of the famous canine crunches for the kids on TV and streaming. Chase and his dogs team with advances technology are having their daily battle against the forces of evil mostly an snobby puppy and Mayor Humdinger and his kittens. It is not just about fighting the baddies, but also dogs meeting dinosaurs and sea dog too. The smooth and colorful animation ranks from the dog top gears to the city scapes, the jungle and so much more. Paw Patrol are still on the roll after 11 years, and thanks to the big dog pile of merch that ranks from party supplies to classic internet memes.
Wish (2023)
The GOAT of 2023?
Wish is an animated movie about Asha and her friends, an litterary goat and family that are living in an fictive Mediterranian city that are on the brink to modern times with space travel. Asha and her friends must save the city from their evil king that keeps the wishes of the citizens. The songs are radio friendly, and the movie are like an mix of Super Mario Bros and We´re Back! Stay at the end credits to see the Disney characters. But, the 100 anniversary short was not included as Wish did not get any Oscars and Golden Globes while 2023 was all about Moanas record streaming. Little kids won´t care about awards so stream it with your family if you want 90 minutes of fairytale fun.
Commando (1985)
Commando!
This movie about Arnold playing an man with a daughter that gets kidnapped, as he must do anything to save his daughter are nearly 40 years old. There are no plot but seeing the muscle man beat up enemies, so do not think Oscars or the Golden Globes. At that time people would swarm to the arcades to the early beat em up games. Arnold he had his prime days in the 1990s and up the 2000s like his Terminator roles before bombing with Terminator Salvation few years back. If you want some old action movie find this on Disney Plus or even better VHS and also check out Nostalgia Critics takes on Arnold movies.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Over 20 years of Kill Bill
Kill Bill was one of the movie highlights of 2003, and was a meme of it´s time. Uma Thurman plays a bride that survived a church massacre, and now the bride is out for blood in Japan as the mob awaits. Those who made the movie had a time of their life with severed body parts, liter of blood and sound editing. Kill Bill Vol. 3 seems to be a no go to dissapoint the fans as Quentin Tarantino had his prime time ages ago. If you want to stream some mindless and classic martial art movie that takes you back to the vintage movies in the style of Bruce Lee and cheap 1980s horror this is a must watch for the adult crowd.
Big Hero 6 (2014)
Big Big World
Based upon the Marvel comics Big Hero 6 is about a boy and his robot that lives in an future city. Tragedy strikes at an science fair, and the robot and his pals must find out who the one who did it are. The movie is just not about fun and action with an balloon robot, but the movie also strikes on your feelings too. Baymax risks it all in the climax, and he is not done as Disney Plus are bringing up several Baymax episodes and the toys in the Disney parks for the die hard fans as the next Disney collaboration Strange Magic bombed that year. The movie that are now 10 years old do not shows its age, and not just for kids as adult anime fans and elder who grew up with very old scifi can enjoy this too.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
Home Alone in NYC
The first Home Alone was a success so they made more sequels, as maybe more awaits on Disney Plus as this is one of the biggest in the family comedy franchise that sold a lot of VHS back then. Now Kevin and his family are seperated again, as Kevin ends up in an fine NYC hotel where celebrities like Donald Trump are. The kid also meets Tim Curry and his pizza delivery, as the two thieves are at it again. With the sequels the slapsticks gets more out of hand, as the two thieves here are getting burned., bricked and pecked on in two hours. Home Alone 2 did not get any Oscar nomination like the one for Maculay that has done many roles than comedy, but who cars this is a VHS must find for adult 1990s fans and kids that loves old comedies.
Trolls Band Together (2023)
Trololo
Based on the 1990s toy Trolls Dreamworks with the meet and greet in Universal Studios has now made three Trolls cartoons, and this time the trolls reunites with their families and they must face an evil pop duo as an climax. The animation is a step up from the 2020 sequel like an trippy 2D animation segments, the road chase and an abandoned golf court. You have seen it all before like the music duels that ends it all, the main lead dies but gets revived by the power of love and the retro revival but this is a must watch for the Trolls collectors in all ages. Tim from my local band A Friend in London was one of the dubs.
Cinderella (1950)
Cinderella!
I am suprised this movie did not reach the best of IMDBs top 1000. Cinderella from 1950 is based upon an old fairytale about an girl going form rag to riches in her busy family life. The animation is awesome from something from 1950 with no computer from the dream like backgrounds to the menacing cat and stepmother. If you think this is just an little girl movie made for Disney consumerism you can be surprised to see the suspense too that also men can enjoy too, and the book version becomes dark. Many have Disney Plus, but if you have an VHS recorder this is also an must have for your collection of the vintage Disney movies.
Bluey: The Sign (2024)
I wanna do tonight again
Bluey and his family are invited to an wedding, but the bad news is Bluey and his family must move to another city. Now it is up to Bluey to remove the sale sign of her home, and it ends in an touching climax even if the Heeler family are going to stay in the house. The 30 minutes special ends with a song that sounds like Ray Lynch´s New Age music from EPCOT. This episode is not alone the power house to sell Bluey toys for the kids, but also an must watch for the adults that have Disney+ that loves pets and loves Australia too. I am sure this special will be one of the most streamed of cartoons when early 2025 comes knocking on the door.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
12 points
I was 1 in 1974 when ABBA won Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo. Until now there are only three songs about Eurovision Song Contest, and The Story of the Fire Saga is one of them. 6 years after Will Ferrell played in The LEGO Movie the man goes north again now in Iceland to win the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with his girlfriend, but beside the tons of fun like the bouncy folk song Jaja Ding Dong there are also lot of drama too. With Eurovision Song Contest 2020 sinking the fans was lucky enough to get this movie where old legends from Iceland meets the modern stage. And, who knows when Iceland in real life will host Eurovision Song Contest?
Finding Nemo (2003)
Fish
The 2000s was a good decade for flightles birds, animal mascots on old European cellphones and penguins. FInding Nemo is about a fish that ends up on in an dentist fish tank and must find his way home to his father on an journey through a rich detalied computer generated Sydney. Like Bluey two decades later it is not just about the funny Disney animals, but also an education in Australia too. If you think as an elder this is just an animal movie meant to sell toys and Disneyland tickets I recommend this as there are memorable memes and quotes, tons of fun, tragedy and memorable characters too.
Ratatouille (2007)
Rat in mi kitchen
UB40 knew back in the middle of the 1980s that singing about a rat in the kitchen would be an Pixar cartoon 22 years later. Remy is a rat that ends up in a kitchen, and hilarity ensues. You also get a lot of other memorable characters like the food reviewer that was an mid 2000s meme, as the animation is great for something from 2000s like the CGI Paris landscape and the fur. Talking animal movies could be a hit or miss in the 2000s, but Ratatouille made so good a menu that this went to the IMDB best of 200 hit list. The movie are not just for the kids and also the adults who loves France, but who does not love France as it got this rat, the classic sights and the food?
He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special (1985)
He is a the man
The brawly He Man and his friends and foes they ends up in our world as bad guy Skeletor is the one that must be saved. He-Man and Sle_Ra is one of the icons of the LGBT and gay icons, and they are both up and running since the 1980s. I may not be an He-Man expert and collector as He-Man is an big toy commecial, but this is an on the list not just the kids, but also the adult 1980s fans too. The cast is an all star list that ranks from Bill Reed to Lou Sceimer from nearly 40 years ago as the animation show its 1980s cartoony style, but the fight for the LGBT community still stands up World wide.
Coco (2017)
Funny Bone
Based on Mexican myths and celebrities Coco is about a boy stealing a guitar, and ends up in the land of the dead as he must fight his way back to the land of the living with his pets and his family. Some cartoons from 2017 loaned from the southern countries like Ferdinand and Capper in My Little Pony : The Movie singing the Spanish guitar based I´m the Friend that You Need. The animation is Pixar standard with bright and colorful and very detailed settings that combines old Mexico with modern things like LED TVs and 1980s cameras and 1980s computers. It may not be for all and may look like Frida from the 2000s and Tim Burtons movies , but it is a recommended movie when you and your family has 90 minutes.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
SISU
2020 and 2021 was a tough year for all first the covid and then the war in Ukraine after the downgrade of the pandemic. This movie is about an girl meeting and dragon that survived an battle against the forces of evil,as this movie portraits the early 2020s in the uprising of an modern Asia. The animation is gorgerous that ranks from the dragons to the remote Asian settings. It feels like an girly movie in the style of My Little Pony: A New Generation, but men can enjoy this too as there are many nicely done battle sequences. Raya and the Last Dragon may have faced many dangers in entertainment that year, but got saved by streaming.
Da nao tian gong (1961)
Monkey
Based on the old legends about the Monkey King, this old monkey is stil doing well in 2023 with an recent Netflix movie. The mischief monkey is on the loose, and is causing trouble for the emperor and his army. As an animated movie this old this was something from the animation of the dream like backgrounds and the effects of the battle. The music was awesome too for the use of traditional Chinese music with a lot of drums and percussions. If there was an Oscar nomination for best animated feature back in the 1970s this movie would have an runner up. The movie is not only for the kids but also the adult fans of the Asian cinema and art too.
Superman (1978)
Super
What can I say? It is Super. A man of steel is born on the planet of Krypton that is on the brink of destruction, and are then sent to Earth by his parents. There in the big city now Superman and his aka Clark Kent must face his everyday life as both a clumsy office worker and also his Superman self to save his planet from three villians that will occur in many of his movies and his may comics too. This movie are not just for the kids and the comic fans too, but this is alaso on the must watch lists for the 1970s kids too. The next Superman movies may be in delay trouble, again so enjoy this Blockbuster on a big home cinema.
Home on the Range (2004)
Home
An original Disney Westen based cartoon about three cows and their animals going out on their Wild west adventures to save the Patch of Heaven farm. The animation and the comedy are like Spongebob Squarepants with farm animals. Some of the jokes are so 2000s, but it looks like an early version of Fighting is Magic too. This was when Disney was in trouble box office wise, and they are having some controversy too now this decade. May Tianas new ride and Mufasa save the year for Disney. This may not be the best comedy of the middle of the 2000s, but 1 hour of non stop action for kids and to sell many of the Disney Birthday decorations .
Shrek (2001)
It´s Shrek
Back in 2001 Shrek was released, and became one of the box office kings of 2001 while Disney suffered with Atlantis The Lost Empire. It´s about an ogre and an Donkey facing an evil lord as Shrek falls in love with princess Fiona. The computer generated images takes the fairytale world to a new level from the medieval cities, the swamp, the forests, the fur on Donkey and the scales of Dragon. The movie has not aged well with pop culture references, but it is well done. If you want more Shrek with your family but the 3D extra disc version that was in Universal Studios. You seen the memes, now see the movie as there are something for all.
Planet 51 (2009)
Aliens
2009 had some ups like Up and Coraline. But, there was some forgotten movies too like this Planet 51. Dwayne Johnson has faced giant rodents and volcano monsters, and here he plays an goofy astronaut and doctor called Baker that are landing on Planet 51. Mayhem follows as this astrounaut lands on Planet 51, and the soldiers are on the chase as aliens eats brains follows. There are so many product placements like chocolate and outdated jokes like E. T. Extra Terrestrial, Macarena and Aliens now as the Alien behaving like dogs. This may not be the best movie from 2009, but it is a good watch for 100 minutes for you and your family when your TV gets boring one day.
Nope (2022)
Monkey
The movie begins with an monkey going really bananas under an talk show, and killing people based on true events. Then it is about aliens coming down and mauling people making an symbol of predators shown through the movie. The ending steals the plot from Escape from Planet Earth and the aliens interest in inflatable waving arm dolls from car dealer ships and 7 Eleven. If you think this is a no brainer horror comedy you have to think again, as this is Jordan and Peeles usual blend of philosohy, nostalgia and horror that I think confused the Oscars. If you want some alternative Halloween movie to stream on that time of the year go for it.
Hammer House of Horror (1980)
Hammer time
Long before the VHS compilation movies from the 2010s there was these rows of the 1980s Hammer House of Horror episodes. I was watching this on Danish TV in the 1980s late in the evening. It´s been so many decades that I can´t remember any of these episodes that was one hour long with actors who later on would become big stars in the 1990s and the 2000s. This show are just not for the classic horror fans, but this show are also a must watch for the fans of the 1980s horror TV shows and mystery detective 1980s fans too who would stay up late as teens and adults to watch these horrors unfold on the screen.
Escape from Planet Earth (2012)
You can´t escape
In the row of the early 2010s science fiction movies for the kids this is about aliens again landing on our planet, as they get captured in Area 51. You have the twist villain, the nerdy one, the father figure, the fall before near death and more again. Escape from Planet Earth was released in Christmas 2012, but the movie got abducted by the super powers of Frozen few weeks later. The animation is nothing to complain about from the animation of the aliens to the remote Area 51 desert and the battle sequences. But, all that is also wasted on many old pop culture references like in Planet 51 and Monsters VS Aliens.
