Should have let Geordie be Music Supervisor
While I did kind of enjoy this, I do not think it is lives up to Todd Haynes' usual standards.
There were some positives. The acting was first rate and it was an interesting story of a delusional sexual predator. The awkwardness within the family dynamic was effective and Charles Melton stole the movie with his tragic portrayal of a child/man.
However, the over-the-top music opposite the very subtle scenes was laughable. Geordie might have done a better job picking the songs. At one point, I thought this was a parody of real crime dramas. In fact I'm still not sure. Good decision to go right to Netflix as it feels like a TV movie.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Parents just don't understand
Everyone speaks different dialects or languages. No one seems to express everything they feel. As a result...chaos. Of course, this representation of chaos is extreme and fun/crazy/over-the-top! But it's all about family and I loved every dysfunctional second. As a mom, is the great evil the power of our children? Are we parents the great evil in our children's lives? Probably.
This movie is so brilliant that I had to watch it twice. I actually don't love all the martial arts fighting but it still works. Fantastic!
Only Murders in the Building: The Sting (2021)
Manhattan Murder Mystery meets LA Story
Loved seeing Steve Martin bring in some of the surreal imagery/fantasy he so cleverly used in LA Story (remember the talking billboard?).
I have also never enjoyed Martin Short quite so much. He seems to have mellowed with age and his performance and banter with Martin is subtly hilarious.
