When will Hollywood learn that less is more?
3 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Could've been an easy 9/10 if it weren't for the cheesy creature twist thrown in at the end.

This film didn't need a sun creature to prove it's a thriller/horror film. The vast empty infinite space already does that, along with clashing personalities turning insane due to emotions and the mind coping with the almost impossible ordeal at hand as well as the isolation.

Hollywood needs to learn that not everything needs to be over the top fantasy oozy woozy for a sci-fi film to be good. Sometimes, simplicity is the way to go. Film already had me at the edge of my seat on the first half, but quickly got bored as soon as the flashy razzle dazzle of the sun creature was being teased.

Less could've been more

Great film but the only critique I have - and this is only my opinion - is that the movie tried too hard to be weirder and quirkier than it already is just for the sake of it. Too much razzle dazzle at times that it gets too repetitive and predictable. Could've done less, but would still leave the same impact, if not, even better.

First half got me fooled
28 January 2022
Watching the first part of the film had me wondering if I was watching a romantic movie made for 10 year olds (which is not a bad thing, just not what I was expecting). It was too airy, too cheesy, youthful, and innocent.

The second part came in, and it all made sense. The film did a great job making the premise easy to understand.

The second hour is the reason why you should give this film a chance

Yes, the reviews are right: this film is - relatively - boring, too long, and uneventful. But the thing is, this is not for people who expect the usual romantic film.

I watched this expecting something along the lines of Wong Kar Wai films, and if you are too, this is different. And frankly, the main thing that saved this movie from a low rating, at least for me, is the showcase of great filmmaking on the second half.

Even better the second time around
9 December 2021
I pushed this film back on my watch list for quite some time cause I thought I knew how the movie will go just by reading the general synopsis. I was right... although, I didn't quite expect for it to hit that hard.

Painful, haunting, and realistic. Hits even harder during the second watch.

This film isn't just for me, though I know this is right up other people's alley

Slow paced films are not new to me, in fact I love slow burns that's why I gave this one a try. But when the slow burn is just too slow with almost no events happening and with a finale that's just not worth all that build up, it just doesn't leave you satisfied.

This reminds me a bit of the film 'The Brown Bunny' (if you know, you know).

Give it a try and see for yourself if this movie fits your liking!

Beautiful and heartfelt drama, but a bit difficult to empathize with
20 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie with two goals in mind: I wanted to cry, and I wanted to see Kim Go-Eun's beauty. However after watching, I only achieved the latter.

What made the film a bit difficult to empathize with, AT LEAST FOR ME, is how unconvincing grown up 'fake' Hye-Ji's attachment is to the grandmother. She only had a relatively short span of time spent with the grandmother, and didn't even bother to visit her again after she was caught with the identity theft. But suddenly she was so concerned and worried when grandma was reportedly lost, and even decided to be her personal caretaker.

On the other hand, the strength of the film lies with the acting. Although this was not Kim Go-Eun's strongest exhibit, it's definitely one of Yuh-Jung Youn's (grandmother) and would undoubtedly try to squeeze the hell out of your tear ducts.

Good old creature film that lingers in your head after the credits

If there's anything about this movie that would make someone who's not that fond of creature films think this was worth the watch, it's that harrowing finale.

A film that perfectly depicts the word 'frustration'
15 October 2021
You'd know a thriller is well written, well directed, and well acted when merely watching it would make you want to pull all your hair out.

I give it a 9/10 cause I'm pretty much sure Na Hong-Jin intended the audience to feel that way, and it's downright effective. But then again, it's Na Hong-Jin (The Yellow Sea? The Wailing? FRUSTRATION IS HIS GAME).

A steamy and exquisite melancholy

The strength of the film, and what makes this an excellent watch, is its unique elegant style.

How can you make a depressing and sexually intense film stand out? Throw in a superb jazz soundtrack!

4 hours never felt so quick

Don't let the run time fool you into thinking this will be a chore to watch. In fact, you'd be wishing it went on for a bit longer (Sion Sono actually said the original version initially ran for 6 hours!). Dull moments just simply don't exist.

This is not only Sion Sono's best piece, it's one of Asian cinemas' best.

The kind of romantic movie you watch for the vibe
13 October 2021
Plot is expectedly predictable and the dialogue is lowkey cheesy at times, but the film's charms is brought about by the excellent leads' on screen chemistry and the overall chill and cozy vibe it provides.
