Jump Scares and very little else
19 June 2016
Being a huge fan of the horror genre, one must be disappointed with the quality of movies being churned out by "Hollywood" in the last 4-5 years. Conjuring was one of the exceptions, albeit partially. It managed an effective combination of jump scares and build-up. I, for one, love the horror genre, not for the former but the latter. Extensive experience in this genre has trained us well on the wheres, hows and whats and hence, build-up is what should matter most.

It is extremely disappointing to see the extent to which jump scares were employed by the makers having established themselves in the 'true story' mould with the first movie. They even aped camera angles adopted in the documentaries on the Enfield haunting, for crying out loud!

I was distraught when I read somewhere that the nun sequences were added as an afterthought. Wonder if the movie would have been better without these scenes?!

The Elvis part, bad. The climax, worse. The unwanted VFX, worst.

Hoping for a better 'true story' with the next installment.

Mr. Sunshine: Crystal on Ice (2011)

Matthew Perry is a great writer! Isn't he?? I have read so much about his legendary wit in Friends, Studio 60, End of Steve et al and was pretty sure that Mr.Sunshine will be one sarcastic, witty roller coaster ride. Sadly, except Matthew and Allison to an extent, there is nothing much in this show to look forward too as the season progresses! There is too much dependence on slapstick situations and there are characters created specifically for that purpose (Nate - to quote the worst!) In this episode, Matthew was really good - with Roman, Andrea and James or Crystal, he was in his elements. But the scenes in his apartment, crystal's ice dancing drama - not good! Also Andrea, James and their relationship issues - bad for the show!.

Looking forward to a better episode next week!

Something's wrong!

Patrick's crazies are kinda subdued in this episode. The Russian drug lord angle was kinda unnecessary. Robin Tunney just does not suit cop/boss role! Is it just me or is there anyone who thinks somebody else has to replace her? Her relief on not being held responsible for Patrick's actions was unconvincing and also unlike Teresa.

I know its not an ensemble cast, but Owain and Amanda disappear every now and then. Its like they have been signed up for guest appearances of late

Hope the writers are not cooking up anything between Le Roche and Teresa!

Looking forward to a better episode next week
