Jalsa (2008)
A movie is more than a few good one liners
Pity is a word that I don't like using upon persons. But it's inevitable sometimes to feel pity on all Chiranjeevi fans (including myself) who feel an obligation to watch and appreciate Pawan Kalyan's movies.
The story is about a person who loses his family coz of poverty, joins Naxals and returns to the mainstream life after unable to digest the principles of Naxalism. The time lines are all blurred to make any judgments here. But why does it take him such a long time (he is shown to climb 3 levels in the Naxal hierarchy) to get vexed up with Naxalism? Instead of voluntarily coming out of it, he comes out only when the circumstances make it comfortable to. The whole of the above content is packed in a 15-minute time box which also includes a song. It appears like this entire episode is unnecessarily inserted to accommodate the scene which is blatantly lifted from 'No Man's Land'.
Then he joins a college and starts increasing his PGs and consuming tankers of alcohol. There is no reason shown why such a sudden change from a poverty-stricken, Socialism-craving life to such luxurious consumerism. The only things that act as pointers to his early life are Che's photos hanging in his room.
The scene where our beloved hero reveals that he is an ex-Naxalite could be declared the most incoherent in the movie. Coz there is no need for the revelation there. I couldn't figure out why he vented his anger on his friend, when there was another lying on the ground with his spleen punctured.
It was projected as an out-n-out Love story, but I never found any love between the lead pair. Only domination, whole-hearted submission. The hero, as has become a fad in Telugu Industry recently, is the Indian version of He-Man. However strong the opposing group is, they can't budge his hair unless he wants to. This impresses two pretty girls and both of them say "He is mine" at the same time.
Parvathi Melton is buxom but her character could have been omitted without effect. With all levels of decency known, I can't avoid myself doubting if Ileana crossed puberty. During the most of the first part, her expression on seeing the Hero, is as though she has swallowed a Viagra (I know it won't work for femalesJ).
The villain, who states he has 1000 Cr property, is miser enough to keep a gun with him and in the climax takes out a sword to fight with our He-Man. Even before the fight starts, the henchman of the villain kills himself to avoid seeing his master's defeat. How he could figure out the future only Trivikram knows.
Dialogues are good and there are a few really good scenes but the poor script and the ubiquitous fourth-dimension acting of Pawan nullify them. The extremities of his character make it impossible to connect with the audience. Some scenes spark humor, but it is not sustained.
One particular dialogue by the Hero on Rape shows the pathetic state of our Industry. Though it's intended for comedy, I am afraid how it could be interpreted by different people. There is abundant violence in the movie. Except for Prakash Raj and the jail, there is no evidence of Police Force in the World where the story takes place.
The voice over by Mahesh Babu is refreshing for a change and might start a new trend in Tollywood. Dubbing by Colors Swathi to Ileana is also good. The songs no doubt are nice. Pawan's dance is careless in most of them. A particular song was different with fights included.
Pawan Kalyan is a very interesting person. After starting his career at Mt.Everest, he had slipped quickly to the heights of Deccan Plateau. He seems to be interested in Socialism, adores Che Guevara. But the problem is he can't come out of the cocoon called Luxury. So he lets out his frustration by putting Images of Che Guevara in his films and shouting at other characters about life etc.
The only attempt he did to help the Common Man is to declare the Common Man Protection Force with so much pomp. He stated publicly that he would come out with an agenda in the next 45 days
and has comfortably forgotten about the idea. If it had any agenda
the first one should have been to protect the very Common Man from such films as he has just acted in.
Happy Days (2007)
Definitely better than most of the crap in tollywood but ahem.....
The movie shows a small chunk of 8 students' life in an Engineering college. Kudos to the director for selecting a really existing college, which I think is one of the basic reasons for the good openings. After watching the movie, I realized that Marketing for the movie is good and Direction... well ahem...
At the outset, the students enter the college as singles and leave the college as couples. (One fellow fails only coz he dint trust his friends.) The director created a fantasy world by revolving around the love that develops between these characters.
One of the worst parts of the movie is when Kamalini Mukherjee enters... as a lecturer but looks like a hooker. And the second worst part is when a cricket match takes place between the seniors and the juniors. You should watch it to know how bad it is.
There is a lot of incoherence in the story told. Climax is synonymous to the director's last two movies. Heroin and hero going out together (In Anand its a car, in Godavari its a walk and... YES YES U R CORRECT!! its a bike here!! ) The director always seems biased towards the female role. The subtle dominance of heroin is quite obvious in all his movies so far. But in this movie it goes a bit too far when the heroine makes the hero strip off his pant and throw it into the river...just bcoz some junior girl touched it. This wonderful event takes place at the necklace road of Hyd!!! So they two happily get onto the bike (on which the junior girls rides too B-)) and go home with the hero in his boxers and saying that it's cool as he is getting air!!! Most of the folks who liked the movie were impressed by the character 'Tyson'. But the boy speaks as though he is brushing all the time. I couldn't figure out half of what he spoke through out the movie. He loves his senior and that girl did well.
The telangana accent-wala Rajesh's character was funny. His pair girl was also okie. But I wonder how these two come to each other's hostel rooms during nights. Rajesh even goes into her room and wakes her from sleep during one scene.
There is one supposedly-clever-cum-poor fellow who gets off the studying-track for a girl who cheats on him. Neither his character nor his lover's are fully shown evolving. We are left with the question why the girl selected him from all the available choices in the college.
Now comes the lead role. Chandu and Madhu. Tamanna Bhatia as Madhu is really charming, and the director shows his obsession with the ladies' waist and back by showing again and again that part full screen. The boy who played Chandu's role reminds us of Siddharth. But knowingly or unknowingly he imitated him too.
The movie is more clichéd than it is well-written and the dialogue is not intelligent either. There are some moments in life, when everyone except you agrees on a point. Majority wins (esp. in a democracy) irrespective of what your point is. So I lose here :(
