Spirited (2022)
It is indeed a new genre of Christmas film!
I watched the film without expectations and damn, it was a ride! Honestly, the first part of the film was overwhelming and also from someone who haven't seen Christmas Carol, it was hard to follow. But I got the gist of story when Will finally haunted Ryan. And I easily got attached with their characters. There was really something meta with how Ryan was bringing his character and Will was the on script guy. For the first time in years, I fell with the romance storyline of Will and Octavia. Like i was wishing I have something like they have. But back to Ryan, you can see his denial with things that he was able to see and pushing it back and I like it for his character. He saw the possible future and did what could stop it. And when I thought that was the ending, it had a twist and also a delayed one. Definitely unexpected and it was incredible. Also like how self aware the film that it is a musical. The cast was perfect! Ryan and Will should definitely do more films together! Do it again AppleTV.
How to with John Wilson (2020)
John Wilson is me or maybe similarly like me
Picked this up because I saw Nathan Fielder was one of the executive producers and im a big fan of his. This series has been on my watch list for quite some time now (almost a year) and I picker this up this week (mid 2023) because almost all tv series or movies nowadays are overstimulating for me. I also just finished watching Marcel so to follow that movie with this is perfect! The mundane things mentioned in this series, the things we wouldn't have notice if we were always in our phones are emphasized in this series. I really like noticing small things around me and so John doing that in film and putting a good, perhaps relaxing narration along is excellent to watch. I hope more tv shows like this gets produce and release. However, im all for writers and actors strike so whenever long that would take - I can wait. If Hollywood needs to halt altogether, I'm fine with it. As long as we can support them just like how we need to support tv series like this. I love this so much!
Superstore (2015)
the best written sitcom ever made (atleast in 2020s)
Don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of The Office (my top sitcom of all time) and Parks and Rec, IT Crowd, B99, Kim's Convenience, Schitt's Creek and some few that I don't really love that much (Friends, TBBT). So when I saw this series released on Netflix on 2022, I picked it up immediately (I'm thirsty for new sitcoms). And it took me 3 months to finish this as I watch series in a one episode per night basis and I really must say. THIS IS BY FAR, THE BEST WRITTEN SITCOM EVER MADE! It made you care about each character even with new characters who came in later seasons. You knew each characters' traits and how distinguishable each of them from one another. It made you care about their side stories, their banters, their work rants, their little complaints and how it all connects from episode to another. Each of the episodes were not a waste to any season as it gives a meaningful conclusion to each one. The comedy punchlines, the awkward silences I miss so bad in The Office and Parks and Rec all there. How Amy is like the most indecisive lead character ever and how it all fits with the plot. I'm sad she left halfway of the last season but very glad she made the last 2 episodes very full of moments with the characters and all. The ending might feel rushed yes but the series has already come a long way and the final scene on the last episode is definitely one to remember! New sitcoms should take a note of how great the writers, actors and all people involved in the making of this show. I need more shows like this! Sometimes we all just need to relax and laugh.
The Fabelmans (2022)
It would've been a 10 but that ending left me dissatisfied
I've been longing to watch this film since its release because - it's Spielberg's. I haven't watched most of his films or I may just be unaware of it, but we all know he's one of the best. Media has also been marketing this film as 'Spielberg on Spielberg' so I knew that I'm diving into a semi-biopic film about his life story. And after watching this, I must say that I really like it. The film made me realized that the struggles that I'm experiencing right now has already been experienced by so many people - in this case the Fabelmans. The things I cry about, the thoughts I can't sleep with has been shared with these characters. The art vs family. To pursue something that can give you happiness but can cause others pain. I love that authenticity of emotions and conflict in a film. No one is a villain or a hero. On a side note, some parts may feel like it's a typical American family story but the acting and the delivery of each was just phenomenal. Not a camera nerd (yet), but I love the cinematography. It really does add to the depth of this film. This film could've been a 10, but that ending just isn't in the right tone of what I was expecting. Yes, he did make it to the big guys BUT I just wanted him to realize something more than that - to really finally savor his victory and to look back not just only to himself but to understand that the reason he's there at the point of his life was not by his doing, but by the people that loved and supported and hated and envied him. That every people he stumbled upon and meet in his life - are all important characters in his story.
How I Met Your Father (2022)
It's average but it's not THAT bad. Give it a try.
Okay hear me out. I actually disliked HIMYM during my first watch. I only was watching the show for the sake of knowing what is with that show and why everyone is obsessed with it. I was never into the romance plot of the episodes. I was more interested in the comedic aspects, jokes and punchlines. I think only episode 5 or 6 that I got hooked to the show. One of the factors why I kept watching was to follow Robin's character development (she is the character I can relate to). Summary of HIMYM: Good story flow, bad ending.
Now that we have HIMYF, it does feel like it was marketed towards the fans of HIMYM. It has the similar format but not at all the same. First of all the characters don't belong into one group unlike in HIMYM, that the only character new to the group was Robin. So in HIMYF, they had to build the group from the start. Therefore, jokes and punchlines kinda seem wonky in terms of delivery bc you don't know the dynamics of the characters towards another, yet. I disliked HIMYF at the first 3 episodes. But I endured to watch and finish the 1st season bc it was also the same experience I had with HIMYM. Ngl, it wasn't THAT bad compared to all the critics that it's getting. One of the things I want them to improve is the storytelling. HIMYM heavily relied on this format each episode. Each characters was able to tell their story based on their perspective. HIMYF felt like you're only just following Sophie's perspective.
PS: I am still watching season 2 but I think overall, the series is average. I find comfort watching shows like this. So yeah, don't listen to the reviews on the 1st page of google. Watch it and if you can, finish the 1st season so you'll really see if you want to continue.
Disenchanted (2022)
everybody gotta relax nowadays and stop craving the same thing from 14 years ago...
I've been seeing the same comments like "it's not the same like it was back then". Ofc it wouldn't be. Give the film a chance. For example, Enchanted, the original was also made for 7year olds same as this movie. Not everything has to fit for your nostalgic experience. You weren't even the same person from years ago so why expect the same thing from a film? Your experiences might change something in your inner growth, maybe you look at things not the same way as you did before. Just like Morgan realizing that meeting Giselle before was so magical but now she thinks like everything should have logic or explanation. The "memories" you long won't be repeated as you would want again but it is for you to cherish and use to move forward. Anyway, great film! My cousin enjoyed it!
The Rehearsal (2022)
The psychology in me has been summoned
I watched without any expectation and also didn't read the summary and here I am just shocked and speechless and feeling all emotions watching this show. I thought it'd be an average comedy genre series but no, it's genius writing and twist and turns unexpected made me wanting for more. Can this be renewed for like 5 seasons more? Never seen anything like it. My mom actually thought I was watching a documentary from Discovery channel. It's hilarious. Kudos to the staff, the actors and also the creator, Nathan Fielder for completing this during the strict phase of the pandemic. Good work and thank God HBO greenlit this.
Stranger Things (2016)
binged it from S1 to S4 and it went downwards...overall it's a 6
I was never hyped up to watch this series but I tried to binged it for a whole week. Some parts are dragging, some episodes are lacking of the writing - it seems that the plot is going haywire. But overall, I am bored. There is no mystery to it bc you already know what to expect.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
not people appreciate it
I don't know why people find this unlike-able but i am pretty sure i was emotionally affected with this film. It's the mixture of trauma and cheerfulness that i feel whenever i rewatch this movie. I haven't read the book but this film brings me home...kinda.
