The Old Man (2022)
Starts strong, in a lull by episode 5
This show starts super strong with great actions and a slow roll out of backstory that leaves you very intrigued. Once you are caught up by episode 4, things aren't going so well. Lithgow and Bridges are excellent. Shawcat is kind of a boat anchor, delivering every line almost in monotone. None of the characters are particularly endearing. As the plot development and action slows down after a few episodes, a lot of awkward dialogue fills its place. It seems clear that the writers were trying to recreate the style of The Counselor, screenplay written by Cormac McCarthy, but not doing such a great job. The more literary style of the The Counselor left a lot of viewers confused. How much more so will a bad copy.
I'll keep watching, hoping things get better.
The Batman (2022)
Some great aspects, some lame ones
The good:
The world building is pretty great. I was very impressed by the consistency and imagination for the sets and backgrounds.
The approach to the action sequences felt new.
The plot had some imaginative twists that broke from standard Batman fare.
The bad:
I've seen mannequins with a greater range of expression than Robert Pattinson. After 3 hours of the same dead-faced raspy whispering, you get sick of him.
There's no chemistry between Batman and Catwoman, who wears a mask with a chinstrap over her nose. It was hard to not think of Mermaid Man on Spongebob, with the starfish over his nose.
How exactly the bat and cat suits make weenie Pattinson and tiny Kravitz into warriors is never even hinted at, so you think often, "yeah right".
It seems like Dano tried to fill the acting void left by Pattinson through overacting. I actually thought his Riddler was painfully bad, with the ridiculous vocal gynmastics. Dano doesn't sound like a bad guy, he sounds like a parent reading a book to their kid, voice acting the words of the Big Bad Wolf.
Gun handling was typical ignorant hollywood stuff.
It's always night and dumping rain, just like batman only talks one way. Lots of monotony like that.
Wind River (2017)
Inaudible dialogue, plot not very interesting
Had to turn on captions. People fly 5 feet when getting shot. He finds a lion den with 3 lions 10 feet away and he just walks off from them distracted without looking back. No remote refinery in the mountains hires 6 armed full time guards while its shut down for the winter. Etc etc etc.
I watched the movie for the scenery... While it wasn't actually a bad movie, I really feel like with a more work from the writers and producer we could have had a great movie instead of an utterly forgettable one.
