Hazbin Hotel (2019)
The most not for me show
I will prefix this by saying I had a pretty good time watching this. But only because I was watching it with a friend who is a fan of the show that I could dunk on it with. If I watched it alone I would be miserable.
The show isn't awful and I can get why some would like it. But in my opinion it's a show that dies by a hundred cuts, it doesn't excell at anything and is only dragged down by its flaws that I'm gonna list, and then some positives, and a couple mixed things.
Flaws:
- None of the characters hit anything for me, they all feel very one note and never seem to evolve. Some can be enjoyable like Adam and Lucifer, but adam can sometimes feel overdone and Lucifer I only liked in episode 5.
- I think it takles too many plots, it should have been focused on the plot of trying to redeem a character, and when a character does get redeemed, it feels unearned and sudden.
- I hate Alister (however it's spelt), like really he feels like a discount bill cipher who leans too hard into being threatening, and ironically in turn becomes less threatening, even less than bill.
- it doesn't feel like it's made for adults, the sound design, characters, and writing, it feels like it's written for teens who think it's adult.
- the sound design is almost insufferable, the background music isn't subdude and they play far too many sound effects
I could go on but it's mostly nitpicks beyond that. Let's cut to the things I did liked:
- a few background gags were actually good and 2 or 3 gags gave me a quick exhale
- some of the line delivery is really well done, the VA's usually just do a serviceable job at the characters and some just suffer from the voices they have to do, but some shine through
- the base concept of a hotel to redeem sinners in hell is good
- I like how characters are drawn when far in the background, the simplicity is charming
And last, the mixed:
- the animation is sometimes really good, mostly it's serviceable but in some scenes it hits well
- character designs are another very mixed batch, most don't really hit much for me, but some I really dislike
There's probably more I could've gone over, I might add it later, but that's the main stuff I wanted to say. If anything I wish this show wasn't a comedy or just focused on being more episodic, just picking a lane. I'm glad this show got greenlit it's a pretty decent step for indie animation, and I'd like to see it continue, but I'd be lying if I said it was anything I enjoyed or would ever recommend.
In conclusion, can't wait for season 2 so I can watch it with more friends who are fans and dog on it in front of them all over again. 2.5/10.
The Last of Us: Part II (2020)
Genius way to tell a story and a meaning
The biggest complaint I hear about this game is the story, which i do not get. This game handles a story about revenge in the smartest way I have ever seen. Where as most media covering a story about the consequences of revenge just show you one side, this one shows both.
Both Abby and Ellie are victims to revenge, Abby killed Joel out of revenge for killing her dad while selfishly saving Ellie, and Ellie is out for revenge on Abby for killing Joel in cold blood. And that's what brings on the genius of this, they make you play about half this game as Abby, learning what she's like, who she's friends with, why they're good friends, and why she killed Joel. And it proceeds to show, how insignificant killing Joel actually meant, especially compared to how much she lost because of it.
Of course when starting the game, you root for Ellie, you want her to get revenge for Joel. Until you play as Abby, get attached to her and everyone around her, making you feel awful after seeing everyone you grew attached to die because of Ellies (and Tommy's) revenge quest.
Ellie also looses more than she gets from this quest, Jesse, and her family with Dina. Which is why it was such a perfect ending for her to not kill abby, if she did, nothing would be gained, only more would be lost, and the cycle of revenge could only continue with Lev.
And that is where they pulled another stroke of absolute genius, Abby's story of being a cold killer, who becomes caring and protective over a young child they journey and survive with learning about eachother, is an exact parallel to Joel's story in the first game. While Ellie's story of a revenge quest against someone who killed the person closest to them, is an exact parallel to Abby's revenge on Joel. Making a striking scene of Ellie beating down Abby, right by Lev, another parallel to the murder of Joel. This entire games story is a parallel, Joel taking Ellie across the country to make a cure, only to forcibly take her out of surgery, a journey that amounts to nothing. And Ellie searching through multiple states to get revenge and kill abby, only to let her go free in the end.
This games entire point is about how revenge is for nothing, and the story tells that perfectly.
Oh and I guess the gameplay, acting, and visuals are good too.
Red Dead Redemption II (2018)
Nothings perfect, but this is close
(hi Aden if you're reading this play attention to the spoiler warning next time, click off now and i loathe you everyday for refunding this game to buy GTAV)
I dont even know where to start with this game, so im just outline the main aspects. The game's visuals, writing/characters, gameplay, story and sound. Starting with, the visuals, this feels very self explanitory, just looking at this game you know its beutiful. Its realistic without ever being uncanny, everyone is extensively detailed, what is there to say that cant be explained by looking at it.
The writing and characters are second to none, the gang members feel like real people, who have goals, wishes, backstories, losses. Which makes it even sadder when some die off, and even better when some pull through and make it. Ive never mourned characters in media as much as this game made me, even side characters that only appear in a few encounters are better written than thousands of characters ive met in real life.
The story is disceptively simple, a gang of outlaws trying to survive in the dying breaths of the wild west, trying to last in a world being modernised. But it goes on so many tangents, and completely shifts in chapter 5 when Arthur is diagnosed with tuberculosis and realises he only has months left to live. It makes him start rethinking has life, helping more people, being more considerate, and fixing the messes dutch ignores. This perfectly juxtaposes Dutch's desent into villiany and madness, leaving authur and john for dead at multiple points, making rash decissions that get the gang into deeper and deeper trouble. Arthur sees that the gang is reaching its end and makes it has goal to get as many people out safely as he can, but most importantly John and his family. But even after doing these good deeds, becoming a better person,Arthur still sees himself as a horrible man, whose good actions cant wipe away his sins. At the end of a train robbery where John was shot off the train, hes told that he died, the man he was figthing to give him and his family a second chance. He then goes and rides off with Sadie to save John's wife whose been abducted by the pinkertons, who reveal the gang member Micah had been ratting them out for weeks for his own safety. Arthur returns to camp to confront micah and enters a standoff between himself and the whole gang, but John comes out from the bushes screaming at dutch that he left him for dead. Then the pinkertons arrive and Arthur uses this moment to help John escape back to his family. After giving John his satchel and hat, he stands at the top of the mountain to fight off the pinkertons as John slips away. Arthur is then tackled by and enters a fist-fight with Micah, after injuring him enough and getting a good distance, hes given the chance to crawl after the gun to finish Micah, only to be stopped by dutch. He spend his last words telling dutch he have him all he had and that by helping John and his family make it out, he has won and accepts death. Both Dutch and Micah flee as the pinkertons close in, leaving Authur to pull himself up to the cliffside to watch the sunset as he succumbs to his tuberculosis and breathes his last breath, finally seeing himself as a good man. Years later John and his family are out looking for work and come across a ranch, after going out and fighting a gang that had been hastling the owners and workers for the land, Abigail leaves him with his sins as she sees this as him falling back into his old ways. John reunites with old gang members charles and uncle, who help John with building a ranch house for his family. After writing a letter to them to come back and reuniting with Sadie, they later get news that Micah is still at large and has formed a gang of his own. So John, Charles and Sadie climb up thr snowy mountain to find Micah's hut. Both sadie and charles are aprehended leaving John to climbing up the mountain to find Micah by himself, mowing down hoards of Micah's gang, after finding Micah and entering a gun fight, Sadie ambushes Micah and holds him at gun point, then Dutch walks out of the hut aiming guns at sadie and john, Micah takes this moment to get the upper hand and hold sadie at gun point. After a lengthy standoff, dutch betrays Micah and first at him, letting John finish him off. John, sadie and charles return to John's family, and attend John and Abigails wedding, with charles later leaving to start a family in canada, and sadie leaving to continue bounty hunting, setting up the events of RDR1. And that was me glossing over things
The gameplay and sound I have the least to say about, especially after all that, but they're both great
9.8/10, good lord.
Ready Player One (2018)
Stupid and I love it
Im aware this isn't a good movie, its got bad writing and characters as deep as a plate. But I can't help but like it, im a geek who likes refderences to stuff I like. The characters are completely forgetable, the villian just wants to own the entire virtual world they live their lives in, and will literally commit real world terrorism just to get it. And the main character's motivation for stopping him is just that he doesn't want them taking over because they're bad, the deepest thing they do with a character is having them be self concious because of a birth mark on their face. This movie is the most shallow mindless garbage around but is just saved for me by being jampacked with geeky garbage, and impressive visuals. Grab a group of friends who like video games and blockbusters, order some takeout, and have a blast just pointing at the screen whenever you see a reference.
Chris Chan: A Comprehensive History (2018)
A doccumentory on the anomoaly of our species
Before 2022, I had only heard of chris a few times, once in a youtubers video, and another in the July 2021 ordeal. Which that exact ordeal is what lead me the become fascinated months later, where I stumbled across a video discussing him, which mentioned this doccumentory.
I have spent hours watching this series, because it is not just informative, but everything it could ever be, thanks to chrischan. It can be hilarious in seeing chris' antics, depressing in seeing how he has made his life, infuriating in how he sees the world and others, duisgust at how he behaves and what he does, and confusing in finding his logic.
Id happily spend hours learning about Christian all over again.
Joshua and the Promised Land (2003)
A religious awakening
This movie, nay, this holy blessing is art and cinema at its purest form. The animation is animated, the characters have lines, and the script was without a doubt writen, truely one of the movies of all time. And like my title says, this movie made me find god. After watching monkey Moses and Craigslist simba along with his Tiny jojo stand, I knew jesus was the answer. Not only that, it made me realise thag furry jesus is the way, and I have now ascended to be among the group of holy entities known as furries.
Althought it is a shame that they removed the epic hooker in the final film, this movie more than makes up for it with everything else it has to offer. Simply the peak of cinema.
Terraria (2011)
The best and most polished mash up of references and ideas
This game is just endlessly creative, with all its weapons, enemies and bosses. A sword that summons stars from the sky, a gian worm that splits into other worms, an underground skeleton that sells you yoyo gear, a wall of flesh that shorts lazers and sends out mouths to kill you, a gun that shoots rainbow fireworks, and so much more.
Its hard not to give this game a 11/10, but I stand by my idea there's no perfect game, movie, or show, but my God is it close to that title. This game is constantly fun, its always exciting finding a new chest, beating a boss to unlock a new area, beating an event to get new weapons, and meeting an npc to get new items. Even in the end game, even when I have just about everything id want, its still fun to just hop on and try and do more things, weather building a huge floating biome, a better house for one of my pylon, collecting another dev set, getting my hands on a new music box or finding another enemy for the bestiary.
And all of this is multiplayer, and hell might even become cross platform in the future. So I ask of you, grab a group of friends, set a schedule, and start a terraria world together, and if you ever best the game and want more, you have many mods to choose from. It will be one of the best video game experiences of your life, vanilla or modded, give it a shot.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)
Consistantly creative
This movie didn't have me fully sold at the start, but grew on me heavily. This movie has no boring scenes and held my interest from beginning to end, this is in part due to the dialogue and especially the visuals, if the camera ain't doing something interesting, editing and effects is, if neither of those are being interesting, then the camera is. This movie is light hearted and just a fun time watching, especially for someone like me who digs retro games, and this movie is packed with visuals from that era, and its never overdone, its just part of this movies style. All the characters are likable and have their charm, couldn't hate a single one for the life of me.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2011)
Unironically great, with perfect characters
I adore this movie and the rest of the trilogy, and if I can pinpoint why, its the characters, and this movie excels with characters. The dad delivers every line in such an amazing ans hilarious manner, Rodrick is the perfect older brother who you just love to see on screen being played perfectly, Rowley is a charming carefree kid who isnt played off as dumb but as someone whos just himself. Hell even the characters I hate are fun to watch, Manny's a little hellspawn whos the embodiment of the annoying little sibling, and greg is an egotistical selfish kid, but hes always put down and gets crushed by reality, you love to hate them. The dynamic between the brothers evolves naturally through the time they're forced to spend with eachother, and they're probably one of my favourite duos in cinema. Theres even more characters who i haven't mentioned that I love, Susen Heffley, Chirag, Coach, so on.
Grab a friend or two, get some take out, and just have a blast watching this movie or even better, the whole trilogy.
Bo Burnham: Inside (2021)
Unique =/= Good
I was forced to watch this by a friend in a deal, my thoughts? Overrated, and overhyped. When you're sick of hearing his songs all over the internet, when you don't find the humour in this funny, and when you don't understand what this has that other bottle movies don't, you don't have much to enjoy.
This movie is just a bunch of music videos with directors commentary inbetween, and the music videos, aren't interesting, aren't unique from eachother, and aren't something special. At most, these songs will have lights, or sometimes a projector, or who knows, maybe you'll get lucky and he stands up.
You gotta think here, there's so much more Bo could have done with the concept of being stuck inside, he could have had all these different rooms, areas, all that. But he just sits in an empty room playing a keyboard, where the most creative thing he did was use a projector. People will excuse it by saying "it's just one guy what could he do", please hes a guy with a networth larger than any of ours. I've seen indie music videos much more interesting and ambitious than all the ones here. Hell it didn't even have to be grand or anything, literally just him in different rooms, actually doing stuff to fit the music playing, instead of just blue lights for a song about the internet. Lets use that song for and example, welcome to the internet, they could have done much more with this, showing him actually using the internet. Just him laying on his couch on his phone, using his computer, a smartfridge while we're at it. But no, boring uninspired shots, with basic blue lighting. How imaginative.
Let me propose a question here. Do you think if this exact thing was posted to youtube by a random middle of the road indie artist, would anyone give a damn? Because I doubt anyone would be singing its praises if it was released the same as any music project. But the second its from funny quirky white boy artist Bo and is streaming on Netflix, people rate it 10/10 masterpiece 0 flaws the sexting song can steal my wife from me.
This is a hill I will die on, inside is a boring slog of unimaginative music videos that people treat differently because its different for the sake of it.
Fortnite (2017)
A fun and creative battle royale
This game is flooded with negative reviews, and while alot of them are during seasons that are notoriously not great, the game has improved alot, its graphically wonderful, its fairly well balanced, weapons are fun to use, the maps in depth with dozens of unique areas. Its pretty unfair to hate this game nowadays, its grown alot since late chapter one and a big reason for hate, isnt even the game, its the community which has almost nothing to do with the game itself.
Mechanics are great, there's alot of unique weapons and items, controls really well, just takes a bit messing around in settings, its really enjoyable with a friend or two, team rumbles a fun chaos fest
Overall just a fun mindless Shooter, hop in and play a few rounds with a friend, you'll be having a fun ass time.
Super Buddies (2013)
Being for kids isn't an excuse
Im tired of people giving movies like this an easy time just because its a kids movie. Megamind, The lego movie, and Spiderverse are all infinitely better movies, and are all by a count, kids movies. This movie has no effort or care put into it, and is nothing but a cash grab. Watched it with a friend for fun, and it was a slow movie filled with nothing, no comedy, no drama, no suspense, no entertainmemt outside of laughing at awful cgi and the awful dialogue. Disney has the money to make a good kids film, because they have, countless times, but this is clearly just an attempt of theirs to make a quick dollar.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
A mess with a shining star
This movie is a mess of concepts, such a mess that I've completely forgotten about a two thirds of the plot points, the only worthwhile part of this movie was getting to see more Jack and Barbossa, who are both as amazing as they were in previous installments, other than that, the visuals look great as always, and thats all I have to say, as its all my memory could hold onto in this pile of plot points.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)
Jack has been gone for a long while
I have nothing to say on this movie, because nothing stuck with me, I watched all 2 hours of this movie and I remember nothing, all I remember was how disappointed I felt watching jack, this isn't the Jack you watched from 1 to 4, this is a Jack who is no longer a genius mind that poses as a bumbling idiot, hes now just a bumbling idiot, the concept of a villian from jacks early years is a great idea, I just wish it was in a movie as great as that idea.
Moon Knight: Asylum (2022)
Not a perfect show, but a perfect episode
I will always stand by my belief that there cannot be a perfect show/movie, but I believe there can be a perfect episode or scene, and this, this is proof. Everything to the plot, visuals, emotions, acting, my god the acting, they don't call him OSCAR Isaac for nothing, if I don't see him at least nominated this year, I will never watch cinema again.
This episode makes you question things right off the bat, everytime you begin to grasp something it throws you right back into this other possibility of reality and then lets you grasp both possiblities by the end. Multiple scenes had me teary eyed, especially the ending, as we get both the worst fate one could receive, and the best.
Go watch this show, now.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Freshman Year (2022)
Does what it wants to do, and does it well
Its a fanmade film made by teenagers, you can't expect the world from it, but it still manages to be a fun watch with good humour. If there's anything I can compare it to, it reminds me of a scott the woz episode.
