Britt-Marie var här (2019)
Great story of inter-generational respect
You can see elements of A Man Called Ove in this, even thought it's also a very different story. If you loved that film there's a good chance you'll love this one too. You will laugh and possibly cry.
I have read the book a few years ago and struggled with it, unlike other novels by Frederick Backman. The movie bought it to life for me, I need to go back and read it again.
Although the premise of the story is a little far-fetched, the theme of making the most of opportunities later in life makes for a great film. The casting is excellent. And the film's climactic moment is also realistic, showing there can be great joy in seemingly trivial outcomes.
A Bump Along the Way (2019)
Another Irish Gem
Just chanced upon this on SBS World Movies (Australia). Really glad I did, it was instantly enjoyable. A story we've more or less all seen before, but the Irish just seem to have a knack of doing these things really well. Great performances by the two lead actors.
Spencer (2021)
Kristen Stewart is brilliant but some scenes defy credibility
Kristen Stewart has achieved an Oscar-worthy performance as Diana, but after a while the monotony of her voice gets you down. The opening line that this is a "fable based on a true tragedy" sets you up for a mixture of realistic and imagined/flashback scenes, fair enough. But its credibility is strained in driving scenes on her own and with the princes where there are no security personnel - just impossible - and the estate itself which is clearly European, not English.
Licorice Pizza (2021)
Pointless, confused and way way too long
It starts out vaguely promising but deteriorates into an almost endless series of subplots each less interesting than the last, probably because.you just want it to end. And then when it finally does, the theatre lights don't come up because the credits subject you to a visual on every character down to the most insignificant.
Cooper Hoffman doesn't even look the 15 years old he is supposed to be, but more like the 18 he actually is, so it is unconvincing from the very beginning.
The trailer sucked me in, set to David Bowie's Life On Mars, it avoids much dialogue because if you heard too much, you'd realise it's schlock.
