Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu (1988)
Simple Entertaining character driven movie - a must watch for malayalam movie lovers :)
A story that personifies village life. Let me not talk about the story in the movie but rather give you an idea of it. This is a very complex movie to express in words.. but an easy one to watch !! Simple yet entertaining. All the characters are played well and are realistic. People helping each other, neighbours envious of each other, gulf malayali all make up various character types. The central character of "Thattan Bhaskaran" is played by sreenivasan here.. a simple goldsmith who is in love with the girl next door Urvashi. He is prepared to go to any extent to marry her.. which kind of offsets his life ! Sreenivasan himself scripts the movie. He initially wanted Mohan lal to play the goldsmith but later was convinced by the director Satyan anthikad that lal would add too much weight to the simple character and that he himself should play the character. A special mention goes out to Jagathy sreekumar the Vellichappad.... who is really amazing in this movie. This movie has lot of side characters who give commendable performances and also leave us rib-tickled :)))) - Mamkukhoya, Shankaradi, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, KPAC Lalitha.
Bhagyadevatha (2009)
Simple flick with an hidden agenda
The movie portrays jayaram as a common man with aspirations. This is a emotional flick which portrays a good man with greed for money.
Jayaram runs a cable TV franchisee having big ambitions. To raise the money to buy a fishing boat he married Kaniha, it later turns out that Kanhiha's father Venu Nagavally was not able to keep his promise to give the dowry on time.
The film shows how dowry is still evident in the society and how people must work to eradicate this social evil.
The songs are OK. The name suits well with the story of the film.
Even though Bhagyadevatha is a regular film from director Sathyan Anthikad, the subject is well handled and the message delivered without preaching. Sathyan was able to gift what people are expecting from him. Bhagyadevatha is a film you can watch with family. Don't expect the old satyan magic.. but still enjoyable
Dev.D (2009)
Itz something Different - Modern Devdas ? Intelligient Cinema I would say :)
OK we have seen devdas, we know the story why watch this ??? Important Question!! I went with the expectation of seeing a stylish obnoxious devdas and glad to tell u i got it :)). People with a good humor sense will love it. The movie is on similar lines to Sharath chandra's novel where the protagonist has broken relations with his father and is sent to London for higher studies. He is in constant touch with his childhood love paro, with whom he keeps contact through modern communication mechanisms Phone and internet! Trust is very important in any relation, which eventually is breached when dev hears some stories. From now he becomes the real devdas, Smoking coke, drinking Vodka and then Chandramukhi ! Overall a great performance by dev ( Abhay Deol ) and Paro. I would say chanda was not bad too. The dark humor in the movie is brilliant. There are a lot of humorous moments including a scene where dad tells devdas that paro was yours @ paro's wedding ! How chanda becomes a so called " commercial sex worker" and also the BMW Incident. Wonderfully blended into the movie. Well done anurag 9/10 for the script and 8/10 for the direction !! I travelled 30 kms to watch this movie because didn't' get tickets at multiplex near my house. Anywayz no regrets
Tum Bin...: Love Will Find a Way (2001)
A very earnest attempt - good music , nice movie
7 may seem high , but the movie is really enjoyable. Its not that it a new type of love story, but the way in which unfolds is quiet nice. Thank god its not overdone. Overall in the movie things are kept simple and emotions are apt to the situation. i have seen a lot of movies in which people go overboard with side characters , but here they are kept to a minimum and main focus is on shekar the protagonist and pia his love interest. Music is really good, "koi fariyaad" by jagjit singh is excellent and keeps coming part by part in the movie, the lyrics are meaningful too. Chotti chotti ratein and tum bin are nice numbers too. I have wanted to watch this movie since long, finally got a DVD and please do rent a DVD if you still haven't watched this movie.
Maqbool (2003)
Perfection Perfected !!
It is a pity that Such Good movies don't receive recognition from people..
Vishal is just someone who can blend things perfectly into Indian scenario!.. Every one does justice to their roles.. :)
Naseer and Om Puri have short roles but they do full justice to the roles given and are the best of the lot !!
Abbaji ( Pankaj Kapoor) does a godfather like Role ! with low voice and more of throat in it !! and Does it Fantastically well.. Irfaan , Tabu have done fantastically well.. now waiting to see their combo again in "THE NAMESAKE"
Do watch this movie if u really like Cinematic EXCELLENCE
