M3GAN (2022)
Child's Play 2019 - meets Frankenstein - meets Black Mirror's "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" season 5 episode - meets Smart House
SUMMARY & FIRST THOUGHTS:
A tech toy maker adopts her niece and is inspired to carry out on an idea that could revolutionize the toy industry and relationship between children and their toys forever, but not without malfunctioning consequences. This is M3GAN!
I didn't know what to expect from this film. What social media latched on to from the trailer as a form of free promotion started to make the idea of this film a little gimmicky, and I was concerned... but the experience proved to be something totally different, and I definitely enjoyed myself. The energy in the theater, as well as the energy of my best friend (who was able to stay alert without a drink in hand) was further indication of this film's entertainment value.

This was a nice "horror", and fun start to getting folks together in the theater for the start of 2023. It's definitely heavy on the creepy with moments of mundane comedy than it is "horrifying..." and I do feel like the PG-13 rating held it back just a little bit because I wonder what this film would've done had it been given the same R rating as Chucky or the 2019 Child's Play reboot (which is still my favorite remake-take on the possessed, killer toy idea)...
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Amie Donald as M3GAN, Act Two, themes of pacifying traumas and the importance of human connection, and that opening scene...
Could've Been Better: More logic with the character Gemma (it seemed that other characters had to "tell us" who she apparently was vs her character having room to embody those traits herself...), & space to rationalize how M3GAN takes this violent turn.

Yeah... Brendan Fraser gave a superb performance that deserves an Oscar.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Brendan Fraser's performance, the prosthetic work, Acts Two and Three, the active metaphor(s) for "The Whale," thematic followthrough, and Hong Chau.
Could've Been Better: The thematic continuity could've been tighter. Continuity definitely gets better in the later Acts, but something was missing in Act One to bind it all together for me. The pain and struggles plaguing Charlie was delivered to be due to the physical with a heartbreak attached, but I think it should've been a clearer and loud crashing intersecting of those ideas...or at least enough space in Act One, or via flashbacks across Acts, to give remanence of the latter to catch us up to where we were now with Charlie.

This is a yet another film where my entertainment factor isn't a reflection of my personal feelings. When the film ended, I found myself smiling. There was something special about this movie for me, so I appreciated and enjoyed it. BUT...my entertainment factor is never just for me. It's me taking into consideration every type of socio-economic viewer who is planning to spend their money and give up hours of their time.
This was nicely contained blast, for me; and though I LOVE me some Margot, and enjoyed her here, something in me just felt like she tapped into her Harley Quinn persona and it has me wondering if that "voice" is her go-to "American" voice (since she's Australian)... ... ...
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Brad Pitt's performance (possibly one his best for me), Diego Calva's performance, the Javon Adepo and "stage light" scene and performance, hell...all of the main performances, Lady Fay's P**sy song, thematic followthrough, Margot Robbie, character development, the band music, PJ Byrne and that first talkie production scene, & Acts Two and Three.
Could've Been Better: More marinating with that "love story" component.

In Ann Hornaday's book Talking Pictures: How to Watch Movies, she writes: "For viewers to believe the dramatized reality on-screen, the actor must deliver a carefully calibrated collection of externals-how the character looks, walks, and talks-and psychological internals, a subtle mix of playacting and psychic osmosis...When it works, the movie not only depicts someone whom audience members can instantly recognize and accept as the person they know from history or current events, but also brings forth a new creation, a third character born of the actor's own emotional truth and transparency."
I bring this up because I noticed a few folks made comments about how Ackie lacked Whitney's "look." But for me, every scene she was in, I was able to see Whitney. Especially in that medley performance. She owned the role for me.
Outside of that, the audience reviews (from my social media feeds) are all correct, THIS is that biopic that should be the ultimate period on other Whitney projects. It is truly an engaging and purposeful life story that also takes you down quite an emotional and enjoyable memory lane of vocal moments from The Voice.
Like, for real... we don't need another one, or anything else pertaining to Nippy after this. Let her and her GOAT status rest in reverence.
SN: That final half of Act Three really grabs you by surprise, though. I was really CRYING!
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: ALL of the main character performances (Ackie, Sanders, Tucci, Tunie, Clarke, and Williams), Acts Two and Three, that hospital scene, the medley performance, the small moments with Ricky, the Whitney performance reenactments, & the video snippet reenactments.
Could've Been Better: Honestly, nothing. Even though that Robyn rush in the first half of Act One still bothers me a little bit, it isn't wildly negative to the flow of the story. All in all, this team provided a quality biopic.

I was excited about this musical when I started seeing the trailer, and expected to see the same story just with songs... but it was subtly much more. The musical component felt thematically intentional vs simply fun paced songs to sing along. Smart.
The downfall is that not everyone enjoys a musical, or a musical component that isn't already part of conditioned and familiarized framework like a Disney/Pixar film.
SN: No one can ever top the Wormwood performances of Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman. Periodt!
Also, the subtle RANGE that Ms. Lashana Lynch has given us this year... ABSOLUTELY keep an eye on her!
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Thematic followthrough, adaptation focusing on childhood trauma, the Revolting Children performance, The School Song/Alphabet Song, Emma Thompson, the Acrobat and Escapologist story, seeing the classic Matilda moments.
Could've Been Better: More background to Trunchbull's trauma with children.

Story & Theme
Winner for me - Toro's Pinocchio
The original story of Pinocchio is obviously a classic, and Zemeckis' live action adaptation was done amazingly and loosely well, heightening the adventure aspect of the story. BUT...I do feel that the themes were not as adhesive throughout due to the focus on Pinocchio's day of adventure vs his day of learning while on this adventure.
With Toro's adaptation, I appreciated the colorful darkness of the story, especially taking time to give a story of Geppetto's son. Thematically, the film focused on the relationship between a father and a son, expectations of boyhood/being a boy, the spirit of being a child, and the consequences of childhood and adulthood intersecting.
** ** **
Pacing
Winner for me - Zemeckis' Pinocchio
So honestly, I think both films had solid and appropriate pacing for the story they were telling. When it comes to Toro's adaptation, pacing felt a little choppy and rushed in regards to the relationship between Pinocchio and Geppetto. Some of the frustrations by Geppetto weren't fully justified based on the knowledge we had of Pinocchio, in my opinion.
With Zemeckis' adaptation, the adventure focus gave it that extra nudge forward for me. Though pacing sort of took over thematic followthrough, it did move the character through situations to at least check off the tasks given to him by the Blue Fairy, while also being super engaging.
** ** **
Character Arc
Winner for me - Toro's Pinocchio
As mentioned with my pick for best story and theme, Toro's adaptation put effort into the character of Pinocchio. He wasn't just a means to move the plot, he was written as, what seemed to be, a "real live boy/child." It reminded me of the most recent Child's Play remake where the film gave space to this unknowing and ignorant character to actually learn and pick up habits with help in making sense of them when possible. Even Geppetto had more purpose and range as a character than in the original.
Zemeckis' adaptation, though loose, was loose for the engagement and adventure, not necessarily Pinocchio. From the very beginning, Pinocchio was an upstanding puppet looking to do right, and none of the situations really brought about enough tension for him to be swayed either at all or for too long. The moment that stands out most is Act Three with the Pleasure Island which I would've liked to have seen showcase a more faithful version of Pinocchio.
** ** **
Creativity
Winner for me - Toro's Pinocchio
The setting. The backstory to Geppetto's son. The more "realistic" adaptation to the Pleasure Island climax of the original. And the overall production and storytelling medium. All things that should be admired and given due props, in my opinion.
With Zemeckis' adaptation, I wouldn't say creative liberties were taken, which is probably because the owners of the story were also spearheading the adaptation-so why take creative liberties with their original concept, when doing it "live action" is "creative" enough...maybe??
** ** **
Entertainment Factor
Winner - Zemeckis' Pinocchio
By default, if I were to suggest one to watch to the general public, it would be the Disney live action adaption. I chuckled more during my viewing, the visuals are great, and the focus on adventure really helps with engagement, so it's the most accessible of the two. I also loved the Pleasure Island song.
However, for viewers looking for story and substance, I'd definitely suggest the Toro adaptation on Netflix.
** ** **
Overall, my pick between the two is #TorosPinocchio which gives Pinocchio of 1940 - meets JoJo Rabbit - meets Up - meets The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Both are definitely interesting in their own way due to their individual creative paths, but I genuinely appreciated the depth that Toro applied to the Pinocchio story.
Also, the score for Toro's Pinocchio sounds like quality, and Erivo's When You Wish for Disney is stunning.

It's definitely beautiful... like GORGEOUS! And luckily, at least for me, it seems like the film took a formula from the first film and plopped it in a new environmental context, so the story execution was pretty effective #IfItAintBroke...
I will say that because of following a similar formula, there is a "safeness" to this story, BUT I think it intentionally sets up something that could really amazing for the third installment.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: The visual effects and cinematography, thematic followthrough, and Acts Two and Three
Could've Been Better: A little shift in Spider's storyline to support some character decisions more logically than probably expected.

I really enjoyed my viewing experience with this film! I really wasn't expecting this film to be the surprise that it was. The cast and overall team, based on the production, came off as having a fun time with this film as well.
Yeah there are a few story moves that could be tightened up just a smidge, but they aren't that obvious that it interrupts the overall flow of the film and audience experience.
I also loved the audience of strangers I had in the theater with me. I mean, we all really had a nice time viewing this film. There was an air of satisfaction.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Hong Chau, Ralph Fiennes, the production choices, the Hawthorne Team, the audience view of "the menu" items, the dessert visual, and the levity choices.
Could've Been Better: Thematic continuity with the characters, & more intentionality with the individual groups of characters.

This was such a fun time. There's nothing else to really say. It's smart. It's funny. It's clever. Just an unexpected, but expected (if coming from a Knives Out experience) and chill good time.
Also, SN: That was clearly Kanye on that wall...and since it was tied to the character Miles Bron, it was such a messy/petty/hilarious jab..."

When I left the theater, I had poorer feelings about it as a product, but those feelings shifted after some reflection once I started to write the review (I don't even fully agree with how my rubric still averaged out the overall entertainment factor, but I also recognize that my review and rubric is set up to support a general population of people leaving to spend their money at a theater, and for that... I stand with the overall factor).
I do think as a creative product, there's a lot of potential, but too much potential to try and cram in 120 minutes. This could've been an amazing series. So much more needed to be unpacked that this film just neglects, and I feel like the confinement of film interrupted the love story that was at its core.
BUT... shout out again to Mark Rylance. He gave a really great performance.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Mark Rylance, some isolated scenery stills, Act Two, thematic followthrough, Chloë Sevigny, and the scenes of anthropophagy.

Did I enjoy myself? Yeah, for the most part. I also appreciated what this film did in terms of cultural representation on another level, and looking at lingering impact of colonization from 2 different, yet shared perspectives.
Now... did the film give that same hype and feeling as the first? No, it didn't for me.
Depending on how you look at this film, you could walk away with 1 of 2 feelings: 1. If you see this as a sequel, it might feel a little underwhelming, but better than what you'd expect from a sequel; or 2. If you see this as an/another origin, it might actually feel pretty good and exciting (though oddly placed due to the death of Chadwick Boseman, but good nonetheless).
Personally, I think not having a "true villain" in a superhero story is what slows this film down a bit for me. It's like watching these 2 genuinely good middle schoolers who are never in any dramas suddenly in the middle of a circle arguing/trying/being forced to fight in the cafeteria with no personal desires to want or need to fight, but have been somehow instigated to do so by a bully standing on the side VS seeing these 2 good people band together against the bully.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: The underwater visuals, the Talokanils, the opening scene at the UN, Angela Bassett's monologue, Toussaint, the "water at the window" scene, that LGBTQ representation, cultural representation, thematic followthrough, and Marvel Studios opening for Chadwick Boseman.
Could've Been Better: The Black Panther suit, the conflict/tension, a villain, a little more background to Riri's character (to the point that I need her to have a Disney series to fill in some gaps), and the title (I remember when Michael Jackson came out with Invincible, and there was an article or conversation on TV about how naming projects in ways that can come off arrogant or too bold can lead to distaste).

Okay... so first off, I did enjoy my viewing experience. I love a good, unique take on things like fairy tales, villains, superheroes, etc. -anything that disrupts the tradition or sheds light on a different perspective. There were also a lot of visual choices that helped elevate the engagement of this film in addition to the performances and cast! I also found the film to be perfectly curated for the PG-13 demographic-the music, character interactions, and overall vibe/tone felt "young, but 'hip..'" (Ooo, that made me sound so old LOL)
My issue is that the writing missed an opportunity to do so much more with this film, and at times it looked like it tip-toed on something much more interesting, but then defaulted to a twisted, yet faithful-ish, fairy tale direction.
There was hints at racial tensions related to perceived good vs bad...
Opportunities for both main characters to have a genuine motivation or need for attending the school...
I also wondered what this film could've looked like if the schools weren't separated, and progression through courses and experiences influenced how much of a person's goodness or traits of "bad/evil" manifested and put them on paths of villainhood or saviors...
::sigh:: I just know this could've been so much more. BUT it's not bad at all... maybe they were just a little creatively exhausted after a while?
SN: I would love to see a Gregor spinoff of sorts. I liked his character, and felt there was some interesting complexity to him based on his who his father was and his personal dreams.
ALSO... the "true love" felt a little inappropriate/uncomfortable... weren't they young students? How old was he supposed to be? It felt weird.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Act Three, the casting, Sophie's "makeover" moment, the character Gregor, the soundtrack, visual effects, and the different and creative homages to well known fairy tales within the story.
Could've Been Better: Thematic clarity, the development of Agatha's character, and more character development in Act One.

Did I enjoy myself? Absolutely. The film delivers MOST on its action and pacing to support the action. I just wish there was more "story"...
Also...just a random rant and request- when are we going to get away from folks thinking bullets can stop a being who is floating in the air and crashing through mountains? Like... WHY are we still writing this into these stories? After the first blast does nothing, it's okay to write that everyone ran and/or retreated LOL

Sooooo... let me first say that the film is not as bad as social media is making it to be. It's actually a clearly directed slasher story, with an end in mind and a means to get there. It's definitely watchable, and being available for streaming was a great call.
Now...with all that being said...for those die hard and true Michael Myers / Halloween / slasher fans, I don't think this is the film you're expecting, and it just might leave you underwhelmed because everything I assume you love about the Halloween franchise doesn't really take place until the last 3rd of the film.
There's almost a "first film" vibe about it, as if introducing Michael Myers for what's to come even though the ending says otherwise, and this can possibly come off slow and annoying to some viewers. Very much a #WeveBeenThereAndDoneThat attitude.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Rohan Campbell, Rohan Campbell's lips, the second half of Act 2 and all of Act 3, the Act 3 junkyard scene, the "ending decision," and thematic followthrough.
Could've Been Better: A different approach to the thematic followthrough in relationship to Mike Myers (felt like too much of a creative liberty due to this being the last film in the sequel trilogy), more meaningful purpose with the character Allyson, and a more logical community response to Rohan's character (I would think there'd be more fear and avoidance than there was).

Was this film something that needed to be experienced in a theater? Yes and no.... The cast, energy of the plot, and vision for the story all work to give that theatrical need; but the story, though solid, didn't have enough of a "social critique BANG" when it was all over, and it looked like it was attempting to do so. This is what makes me feel like it could've been available for streaming.
But I will say, you can definitely tell the experience and strength of every key actor in this film. They worked so well together, and every performance and engagement with one another felt top tier.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: The main cast (Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington), the character engagement and overall performances, thematic followthrough, Acts Two and first half of Three, the focus on Veterans, and pacing
Could've Been Better: More unpacking of Margot Robbie's character background/dynamic, and a better conclusion that gave more of a "social / historical critique punch" to match the developmental energy of the story.

As a completely standalone film, Hocus Pocus 2 is a solid Disney Original from beginning to end-especially when looking at its PG rating. Additionally, it seemed to serve as the passing over of the torch to a newer generation of "Sanderson Sisters."
For some who look at Hocus Pocus 2 as a nostalgic follow up, there might be some resistance. Midler, Parker, and Najimy delivered performances that we all know and love, and aspects of the writing even allowed for us nostalgic seekers to experience "our Sanderson Sisters." On the other hand, the story feels much more light and comedic versus the fanatical horror PG vibe of the first installment which might not translate well for other nostalgic viewers.
It definitely gives that "straight to DVD sequel" vibe, but again, still a solid film as a standalone vs a followup to the first.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Belissa Escobedo, seeing the Sanderson Sisters back, thematic followthrough, Acts Two and Three, seeing famous drag queens with actual lines from RPDR, the young Sanderson Sister portrayals, & diversity in the new leads.
Could've Been Better: More motivational ownership by the Sanderson Sisters in the writing, and a more logical motivation that picks up from the first film.

This was really SO GOOD! I mean, I even loved the opening title visual! I think what I appreciated most about this film was its take on the theme and really blowing up that idea of trauma. I also appreciated the ending, as did the rest of the theater (SN: The folks in my theater were so funny, but super engaged and seemed to be enjoying the experience).
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Sosi Bacon, the camera work (I was so mesmerized at times), thematic followthrough, the opening title visual, Nick Arapoglou, seeing Rob Morgan, the "Mustache Scene," and Act Three visual effects.
Could've Been Better: A different idea for Sosi Bacon's last monologue.

Within the first 5 minutes, I did have to adjust my viewing eye to one watching a young love story, which allowed me to appreciate the somewhat whimsical, cutesy vibe of Act One and every scene with the 2 main characters together.
Because of how straightforward and clear this film was in this particular genre for Perry, his writing definitely stood out as having an impact on pacing for me. There really wasn't any life and movement to how the film moved in the beginning, and instead felt like playing those adventure Nintendo games of the 90s where you walk in a shoppe, and have to click a character, read the dialogue, press "X" to read through the exchange in order to move forward (LOL). The writing is just too obviously planned out, restrained and "needed" vs feeling blended, authentic, and purposely loose if that makes sense.
SN: 1. I think there could be a bright future for Joshua Boone. I liked him. I also liked Milauna Jackson.
2. Perry needs to unpack his relationship with women because this isn't the first time where he's used a woman as the subtle villain in a man's life who later has to sit with the blame... that Black church Adam and Eve is possibly a core foundation of his stories.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Joshua Boone, Milauna Jackson, Acts 2 and 3, and thematic followthrough.
Could've Been Better: The writing for pacing support of Act One, and Austin Scott's character development.

This film is like a banging leftover meal that you put in the microwave, but realized some of it is still a little cold/warm-ish as you are sitting and enjoying it...but it's not that cold, and the food is still good, so you continue eating anyway...
I really did enjoy this movie mainly for the creativity and clever attempt with the story concept which was pretty ambitious, but executed pretty well. And again, I just have to shout out Kate Berlant. I mean, talk about a character who was meant to be this side background character who somehow was able to use the lines she had to still stand out (at least for me). She was so funny and so true to the setting, like Kathryn Hahn in Wandavision. I really should've written in my notes the comment she made when she arrived at the dinner party! That alone was an example of how amazing she was in the background...but I don't believe in having my phone out during movies.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Kate Berlant, overall art direction and set decoration, concept, Florence Pugh and Harry Styles chemistry, Acts 2 and 3, themes, the twists, and the soundtrack.
Could've been better: Character purpose with the theme, cohesion with the story of some visual effect choices (such as the "black out" experiences).

I think many are naturally drawn to the name Viola, and I mean she is the lead character of this film, BUT... the star for me is Lashana Lynch! SHE was absolutely amazing.
In terms of the story, I appreciated how the film made sure not to fully anchor the events of slavery (because we've been there and done that in films throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s), and instead focused on "oppressors," from both outside and within in, and the relationship to women.
It's definitely a well packed and intentional PG-13 film.
SN: I really love John Boyega! He had an interview on The Daily Show where he mentioned channeling his dad for this role, and putting on the pounds to give that "healthy, paternal king-like vibe", and there was a scene with Santo where he asked For his court to give Santo a seat, and I felt like I saw his dad in that entire moment LOL
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Lashana MF Lynch! Thematic followthrough, Viola Davis, the fight scenes, the overall Blackness, and the LGBTQ+ representation.
Could've Been Better: Shante's storyline (just a little), and Nawi's character development/cohesion.

Having lived my entire gay cultivation in Atlanta with undergrad and a few years after, the focus of the story was all too familiar, and I chuckle every time I think about it because it doesn't need to be this way; and I see the team behind this story felt the same way.
I want to give major props to Chelsea Zotta who is listed as the script supervisor for continuity. This film does a really good job telling this story of internalized conflicts with faith, authenticity, passions, and truths.
BUT... applause, roses, cheers all goes to Regina Hall and Sterling K Brown. Such great individuals chosen to lead a story like this. I mean, just phenomenal.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Regina Hall and Sterling K Brown! Thematic followthrough, Acts 2 and 3, the symbolism of "the hat," the directorial/production style, the wardrobe, and the "Crime Mob" moment.
Could've Been Better: I honestly think this was a well executed film. We just live in a society where "church" is one of those "things" that isn't widely sellable as a means to garner more attraction for a film like this.

It was definitely an interesting experience, but I've never felt so out of touch with a film like I did with this one. Maybe I'm officially "old" now... I don't know, there just wasn't a character I could truly connect with in the context of the film. This has a target audience, and I think that audience will/can appreciate it more....maybe.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: The character Alice, the "Gen Z fight" in Act Three, women leading/driving the film, the level of present day/millennial-gen z buzz words, and the twist.
Could've Been Better: More intentionality with the theme, more intentionality with the Sophia's character development, and more intentionality with Bee's character.

One thing I won't take away from this film is the overall production design and art direction. There were so many beautiful scenes and ways that Swinton's character was meant to whimsically stand out that was absolutely stunning.
However, similar to my sentiments about The Green Knight, there is something that is missed via film when tackling these very vintage-esque/classic fables and fairy tales, and I truly believe this would've been a BEAUTIFUL well thought out and unpacked series. The main character in both this film and the Green Knight seem to be developmentally lost and rushed in order to prioritize the visual experience, and I don't like that. If you can't bring clarity to the classic (because even classics, no matter how good, still have missteps that can be fixed &/or flushed out more) while also executing a stimulating visual, then take a pause and figure out the best medium to execute both well. It might even mean taking the Dune route, and doing different parts over some years.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Idris Elba, the production design and art direction, the storytelling, thematic execution, visual effects, the subtle parallelism between the stories being told and Swinton's character, the representation of naked full figured women, and the chemistry between Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba.
Could've Been Better: More development for Tilda Swinton's character, and more purposeful unpacking in Act One.

I was never interested in seeing this film from the day I saw the trailer (I don't even think I posted it as a film that caught my eye via my stories), BUT... I watched because I figured others in our film (re)viewing community would, so why not... (luckily I was able to use my free movie pass for this vs my own coin).
I have this saying for films like this, which is "There are films that actors do that truly take a certain level of their craft and heart, and then there are films that actors do because they need to pay the cable bill...just like any other non-celebrity/real person" (LOL).
This film is Idris needing a direct deposit to pay his bills (LOL)-that side stream of income opportunity. Where I feel the film dropped the ball was with not including a matriarch. I think that could have added so much more to the family story, which then could've given more authentic tension to the already tense context of the story, to then open up opportunity for stronger thematic merging and continuity.
OR...(because the film also comes off heavy on the "male/patriarch"), just do away with whole family and daughters storyline, and build a story around Idris and men alone, or Idris and his buddy taking a trip that turns for the worse.
OTHER THOUGHTS:
Highlights: Leah Jeffries' hair, the Act Three fight, the lion/"Beast", and the mentioning of how this behavior isn't real "Lion behavior."
Could've Been Better: Theme cohesion and continuity, and family development and purpose.
