The Sky Is Falling (2005)
What would you do if the sky pierced your living room?
An unusual story about a man whose home is literally pierced by a piece of the sky. The special effects are terrific, unusual, witty and worth seeing. The startling story gets more and more interesting, and giggle-inducing, as the stressed-out young man tries ever more creative ways to solve the problem of the hunk of sky, complete with drifting clouds, that is lodged in the wall of his living room. As the falling sky begins to appear in news reports and to adversely effect traffic patterns, the man looks to the skies and realizes that his problems have only just begun. With a running time of approximately half an hour, this light-hearted piece is an easy and uplifting watch.
Reflections of a Life (2006)
A touching glimpse into a woman's private life
This is a touching story about the effects of breast cancer, not only on the patient, but on her loved ones. The film draws the viewer into the private world and roller-coaster emotions of one woman, as she confronts herself, her joys, and her sorrows in her bathroom mirror. Other people may come and go, but ultimately she must (as we all must) rely on her own strength. We are shown that life goes on and, even amid sorrow, some happiness can be found. The film has a strong cast. It is well-written, and is accompanied by a particularly beautiful original musical score. One word of advice to the viewer: Have a box (or two) of tissues handy. You'll need them.
Arena: An Absurd Notion (1985)
A feast for the senses
This film is almost sensory overload. It is a visual feast of color, not to mention fabulous-looking people, and it obviously features great music, considering the stars and the era in which it was made. Duran Duran have always taken the music video a bit farther as an art form, so this was the perfect genre for their full-length film. Not that this is just a long-running music video. Far from it. It seems to finally encapsulate all they have wanted to express, but were previously kept to only three to five minutes. Very cute storyline incorporating a visit from Dr. Duran Duran, a bit of the history of the band and it's followers, and the development of the music to its highest point.
Kid Quick (2000)
A light comedy about "second childhood".
A charming story about an older gentleman who is beginning to lose touch with reality. His young niece does her best to protect him, as he indulges more and more in his fantasies of being "Kid Quick", the quick-draw cowboy. As his alter-ego, he goes in search of a damsel in distress, and in doing so, helps a not-quite-jaded prostitute turn her life around and begin to fulfill her own dreams. A quality performance by the stars, who are backed by a strong supporting cast.
