Popstar (2005)
Dumb casting
How dumb is this movie, and the producer? He had Adrianne Palicki and Mary Elise Hayden in the movie, yet had his daughter play the lead! (Adrianne was mostly unknown at the time). It may have been his daughter's last movie role? There weren't many entries after it.
The Resident (2018)
Clueless and incompetent writing
Terrible! And I can live with terrible. We tuned in for the good cast. But the crime is how unrealistic it is. My wife is a hospital director, and doesn't like many hospital shows. She couldn't stand this one! I'll watch a few more, to see if it gets better.
But OMG - this show needs a medical consultant - STAT!
Angels Sing (2013)
Very enjoyable, even to a Grinch.
Sentimental? Schmaltzy? Sure. It's a teen movie. We've all seen the story before. Adults may like the characters and the songs. And this Austin Tx movie is chock full of musicians. You mostly hear parts of songs. In the end, I wanted to look up some of them. The musical part has a quirky, organic feel. I'd be happy living in this town! (I wish there was a bonus track, of how the musicians and cast were chosen. Some of the artists are on youtube) I expected little when I rented it. It was Christmas, and the cast looked interesting. I was afraid it might be too churchy. I had no problem with the sentimentality. And the religious aspect was likely turned way down, from the book(?). Some will hate the movie, some will be filled with joy. We built a fire, poured some wine, and really enjoyed the movie! (my wife loves Christmas. I'm more of a Grinch! But I do like holiday lights...)
Friday Night Lights (2006)
Excellent
This is the best TV show I can think of, possibly ever. The acting and the characters are wonderful, there isn't much fill, and not too many distractions and dead ends. And we could care less about football - unless it's the Dillon Panthers. Tami the tiger is ferocious in her dedication to her family, friends and school, and Coach is the best team-dad ever. He can be angry and sullen, but he always has the kids best interest in their futures. The exit of Smash and Street were superbly done, and any scene with Smash's mom is not soon forgotten. WHERE IS HER SPIN-OFF! Two scenes this year that were handled in their typically pitch perfect manner - Coach finds his daughter in bed with the (ex)QB, and he is very angry. When QB gets stuck in Coach's vicinity, he is told that he better respect his daughter! Daughter doesn't want to talk to mom, and would rather just be told the punishment. She is told the punishment will be that they are going to have the conversation. So adult and realistic! No screaming and yelling - just dialog. You don't get a great show without great writing. Congrats!
