Not only was this the coolest James Bond movie, but it was hands down THE best action movie of the 1990s!!! I know this installment is not exactly the most popular with Bond fans, but I suppose I like it so much because I'll watch pretty much anything British, and it helps that I love espionage films. I'm also a woman, so I found this Bond film to be the most fun to watch. It didn't feel like it was overly masculine. And if I am being totally honest, I have not watched all of the Bond movies, nor do I intend to. I've watched Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, The Spy Who Loved Me, and Moonraker. Every actor who played Bond started out amazing, but after 4 or 5 films they no longer had the appearance of a swashbuckling spy. By Diamonds Are Forever Sean Connery looked like an old man, despite only being 41 (and then he came back to do Never Say Never in 1983, even after he said he was tired of playing James Bond). Roger Moore also began to show visible signs of aging in A View to a Kill. I haven't seen any of Timothy Dalton's or Daniel Craig's Bond films. The latter didn't even fit the Bond image, and the former... I don't see what the big deal is about him. Then again, I'm examining the franchise from a woman's perspective. Plus I'm straight, so it's not like I watch the Bond movies just to look at the female characters.
I think it's really cool I grew up during the Pierce Brosnan era of James Bond (I was 2 years old when this movie came out). I feel weird for saying Goldfinger was my favorite. Although the action was pretty decent for a movie that was made during the mid 1960s, there were so many elements of toxic masculinity. Pierce Brosnan gave a stellar performance as James Bond, and he was charming, if not more so, than Sean Connery. He was also insanely attractive. I did enjoy Goldfinger (with the exception of a couple of scenes), but after doing research on Sean Connery, I don't care for him all that much. Considering he thought it was acceptable for a man to strike women - which was no different than how he was in the Bond movies - that reduced the appeal for me, thus making it hard to like him as a person, much less as an actor. All of the actors and actresses in GoldenEye were brilliant. Sean Bean was cast perfectly as Alec Trevelyan. If you haven't already seen this film then you are seriously missing out!
