Skyfall (2012)
The most controversial Bond
This is one of the best films in the series because of its fresh approach. It's focused on Bond's personal story and reveals a lot of his personality (it's happened only in Licence to Kill earlier). It's heartrending because of the development of the relationship between Bond and M. It's fresh because most locations are in the UK not in exotic countries.
And this is one of the worst films in the series because it's ruined the unique way of telling the Bond story as a trilogy that was started by Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. They were building something massive with the idea of a huge global organization that is a total mystery. But they're buried it for a simple formulaic revenge story.
I love it because of the fresh approach Sam Mendes took with the visual part and the story. I hate it because Sony has postponed it for two years (despite new Bond is one of their most profitable movies) so Daniel Craig is looking as a retiree now.
I love it because it has so much respect for the classic movies in the series. I hate it because of the main villain is a clown (despite Xavier Barderm acting abilities) and the new Q is a joke.
I love it because it turns the story around again. And I hate it because its broken expectations set by previous Daniel Craig movies. It's one of the most controversial Bond films ever.
La battaglia d'Inghilterra (1969)
Great spaghetti-war action flick
A really great WWII spy action flick from the Italian spaghetti master Enzo Castellari. Its about German saboteurs trying to infiltrate British radar systems before massive air strike.
The movie starts with an instant action and keeps it up until the very end. A bunch of varied battles between infantry, tanks, aircrafts, commandos etc are done with a quite large scale and without artistic stupidity like it is in Battle of the Bulge. Its also great they've used scale model technique to portray air battles instead of awkward animated background — it looks much more real especially with bombings.
Yep, actors are plastic. But come on, its a spaghetti genre and its great because of cool comic book characters not stunning actor performances! And leading characters are really cool (BTW it seems Mike Myers character in Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" is inspired by Sgt. Mulligan).
What is really stunning here is production designer's work — a lot of well- crafted scenes and interiors. I've liked command center the most — all its equipment is pretty awesome and looks very real. A great variety of cars, tanks, planes, ships and other vehicles is also can be seen here. Its pretty refreshing after the same three cars, two trucks and one tank that is used in most 60s war films.
Although I've liked Castellari's own "Inglorious Bastards" more, this movie is pretty awesome. Just don't try to find great acting here and watch it for non- stop action.
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
Breathtaking
Just this one movie could make Sergio Leone one of greatest directors in the history but he was capable of even more. This is just breathtaking from the very first ten fully speechless minutes where not a word is being said till the very end where's Mexican showdown with a strongest emotional tension is shown and developed through its tiniest details.
I couldn't say what I love most about this film. Whether it is a truly epic approach that combines U.S. Civil War showcase from its both sides with a treasure seeking story and coincidences their pathways all the time. Or it is ultimately charismatic heroes Blondie, Angel Eyes and Tuco who're saying short but sharp phrases and joking all the time. Or it is one of greatest Ennio Morricone achievements where his music is put more than perfectly behind the action. Or it is an ultimately beautiful cinematography that shows you both close shots and great panoramas. I just can't decide but the movie just sucks you in and never lets you out of it's simply but astonishingly well told story.
