Fallout (2024)
Eh
I really thought after watching this show I was going to come back to IMDB and see a score around 6.7 or 6.8. It looks like that is not the case and by leaving a 7 star review I am going to be in the minority.
Here's why I gave it that score; it has appeal to the masses but does little to actually stand out as a piece of cinema. It does capture the many fun details I wanted to see as someone who grew up playing Fallout games, but it fails to break away from the recycled Hollywood template of making a modern day television show. The acting is subpar. Most of it is bad.
Walton Goggins and Moises Arias are fantastic. Ella Purnell can carry her weight but didn't particularly stand out. The guy who plays Maximus has a lot of work to do as an actor. Dogmeat did a great job.
Overall, this movie felt like another "Safeway brand" version of a show that could have been incredibly unique and badass. Some of the scenes were so cringe and hard to watch (ie: the BHOS chanting Maximus name at the end of the show). Like I said, if you like Taylor Swift then you probably liked this show and thought it was badass. If you don't like Taylor Swift and are a cinema connoisseur, then this was enjoyable but at times hard to watch because of the extreme corniness.
It was great to finally watch a respectable adaptation of a game that I spent hundreds of hours playing in my youth and still cherish today.
A for the adaptation, but a C for the execution.
Hell Camp: Teen Nightmare (2023)
This is really dumb
As someone who attended one of these schools I am really mortified by this film. It paints the industry as a whole as "bad". Dont drink the kool aid.
Of course, there are bad places out there, but if you look at any industry that has people helping other people (healthcare, behavioral healthcare, schools, religion etc) there are going to be cases where messed up stuff happens.
I heard about places like this, many people I know went to wilderness camp before coming to the boarding school I went to, but I can tell you it helped. It saved my life. The discipline, the mental fortitude... these are things I still tap into as an adult today. The people who worked at these places, think about who they are dealing with everyday. No one wants this job. No one wants to deal with psychotic, violent children. But the people who worked at these places stepped up and did it. Of course they became exhausted and burned out. If you work in healthcare, you know how often this happens. But unfortunately there just arent many folks out there who want to do this work.
The place I went to was bare bones. The food sucked, the staff wasnt licensed, it wasnt funded well. But it saved my life. That enviornment saved my life. I hated it when I was there, but I am so glad I went because if I hadn't, I dont know where I would be.
Like I said, places where the job is people helping other people are always going to have bad eggs. Hopefully they get weeded out, hopefully those places get shut down, and hopefully those people get prosecuted. But most of these places are doing good work for people who are in serious need of help.
Fargo (2014)
Really Bad This Year
This show has gone down hill since it came out. The first season was good, it emulated the movie a lot. Second and third were pretty good too. Season 4 went way off track. Season 5 is just... It's not even close. The acting is poor, the accents are noticeably unnatural, the story line is completely unbelievable... The only thing holding this show up in season 5 is the unique vibe the Coen brothers instilled with the 1996 movie. That alone carries a 6/10 from me. That alone is the reason why this is watchable. I am looking for any remote resemblance of the original movie and I am getting it here and there, but the rest feels like it's bordering on corny. Like, make it believable. The Coen brothers original movie is dark, but not overly dark, it is subtle, you really feel for the characters and this just feels like if Barbie had to create a show that's based off the movie. The "humor" is not funny. It's meant to be funny and ironic and it's just so PG. This feels like a version of Fargo that someone who never saw the movie and has no pallet for movies could enjoy. It's like the radio version of Fargo. Dare I say, the Safeway brand of Fargo? I'm sure it's appeal and reach is far more broad with this current iteration, but I can tell you a lower percentage of fans of the original movie like this season more than any other. You have strayed too far and this show is living only on its name.
