Liar Liar (1997)
For Clowns, By Clowns
I'm going to be honest.
I have genuinely never seen a movie that has nothing going for it aside from this one.
Firstly, let's begin with the story.
The story is that Fletcher Reede, a lawyer who won't keep his mouth shut, gets put down into a sort of spell by his son Max, because he can't stop lying. The spell in question, making him unable to lie for 24 hours. Problem is, Fletcher forgot for a second that he had a case in his hands with someone named Samantha Cole, who wanted full custody for her 7 kids in court.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that he's going through a divorce and that his wife is leaving him for another man.
Sounds like a fun story, right?
Well, it would be, if it wasn't for a few issues.
Firstly, the acting.
I think most of the people here act in tone with the movie, like the wife, Max and some of the secondary characters.
But. Most of them. Don't feel artificial.
Not all of them feel like they would belong as actual people, such as the people in the lawyer business. If anything, they seem like comic reliefs.
Speaking of Comic Reliefs, I think it's about time I speak the biggest offender in the acting, that being Fletcher himself.
Jim went way, WAY too hard when going through the acting of this movie, and in a way, somewhat ruined a lot of the value and charm the movie has. His facial expressions and sheer stupidity just make a vast majority of the more serious scenes extremely stupid.
Also, perhaps it was the fact I watched it on a different language, but his voice. Just flat out annoys me.
I don't care if that's the point of his character, you could at least make him sound a bit more serious at some points.
Secondly. The comedy.
The comedy is almost second-to-nonexistant, and when it does appear, it's mostly in the form of "oh look Fletcher does silly faces, isn't that funny?" And "oh look Fletcher got hurt because people getting hurt is the pinnacle of comedy".
It always seems awkward, either because you always know what to expect out of these jokes, or because they would seem out of place in an actual court scene.
Third. The story.
While I do like the concept of the story, I do feel like a few of the points were just. Not elaborated well enough.
A lot of the main plot points of the story were things that have been reutilized time and time again in other stories (in other words, they are cliches.), Such as the divorce story, child not being able to talk to their parents, climatic ending that challenges love itself...
But that isn't the biggest issue.
My biggest issue, comes in the form of the ending.
It's not good.
The old lady that appeared at one point in the story comes back around to get Fletcher out of prison. Like. Why?
Sure, she did recognize his efforts and noble worths, and such, but I have to call lies on the fact she wouldn't feel ripped off for not having being paid back a single penny for everything Fletcher has done.
It doesn't feel quite genuine, none of the final act feels like something that would happen, given real life circumstances. If anything, it all just feels contrived.
In conclusion,
not only does this movie become incredibly obnoxious, confusing, and boring, but it does all of that in the matter of an hour and 27 minutes.
Amazing.
The only parts I truly had a smile in were at the outtakes, where I found them just a smidge funny.
That is the only reason I am rating it a 2/10, otherwise I would have rated it a 1/10, or even a 0/10 (if possible).
Please. Do not subject yourself to this.
2/10.
Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn (2014)
Absolutely not.
- Generic Plots (Always has to be stuff related to family things/Getting in trouble for something they didn't do/Fighting with another family for some petty reason)
- Predictable Endings (They learn a "valuable lesson" and make up, only to then mess up in the next episode/a few minutes later)
- Horrible Humor (Toilet Humor)
- Stupid Obnoxious Acting (The Parents are childish, and the children don't look like children)
- That Stupid Freaking Laugh Track. (...Need I say more?)
Just... do not watch it.
