Star Wars: The Bad Batch: The Cavalry Has Arrived (2024)
A great end to a great series
Firstly, Disney is producing so much content for Star Wars and marvel now that, even the most ardent fans, are getting tired of the 'quantity over quality'.
That said, the Bad Batch was a refreshing series of honor amongst a brotherhood (with a sister) that created a group of characters that you actually cared about.
Not all heroes carry lightsabers in this universe and this was a good example of clones understanding that the empire was wrong. Like most series there were a few 'fillers' along the way but overall a recommended series that finished at the right time and on a high.
The last episode will go down in one the Star Wars universe greats and like the empire strikes back (still the best) it had a blend of sacrifice, loss, triumph and tragedy that kept you rooting for all involved.
Recommended.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Battle beyond the stars remake
I'm a big fan of Zak Snyder but he should not put his name anywhere near this cliched mess. Comparisons can be made against all the seven samurai / magnificent seven films but this is almost a direct rip off from Battle beyond the Stars. The acting, directing and dialogue are simply awful. Special effects can be forgiven as they are budget enforced, but simple believable interaction and conversation between characters should be a given at any level of film making. It was rumoured that this was once offered to be part of the Star Wars franchise and I am glad that it was refused (even the last trilogy was better than this). There is a part two to follow but I wonder how much interest it will create for those who have sat uninspired through the first instalment. Giving a low score gives me no joy but two stars is well deserved.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Please read the book
Thor is now an awful joke and parody of the noble god that exists in the comics. The Gorr the his butcher story by Jason Aaron is one of the finest Thor stories for years and I implore users of this website to try and read it just to see what the film could have been and what it certainly was not. Disney are now aiming at an audience that is far too young whilst forgetting the audience that has grown up and want something a little deeper and serious. The daredevil story 'born again' by frank
Miller is a master piece and I am sure that will be the next classic to be ruined by the Disney practice of dumbing down adult material. This Thor bmivie was a truly awful adaption.
Star Wars Rebels: Jedi Night (2018)
Perfect series have perfect sad moments
Let's face it, the empire strikes back was the best ever Star Wars film because it all went wrong for the rebellion and that made us love our heroes even more because they had become vunerable and could suffer loss.
This underlying theme is where this episode takes this final series to a new high. Kanaan/ dume has realised that his time has come and he is facing his moment head in without hesitation. We know what is coming but the moment, the sacrifice, seeing Hera with his eyesight returned for one last look was one of THE great Star Wars moments.
Kansan was not even remotely as powerful as many previous/present Jedis or sith but he still had the humility, wisdom and loyalty to make him one of our favourites and the ending of this episode shows that the greatest heroes are the ones who are unselfish in their actions.
A perfect way to start the beginning of the end for a great and enjoyable series.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Not the boba we hoped for
First review ever and that is only because i felt the need to almost complain about this series and the beloved boba Fett character.
It was the fact he was mysterious and bad ass that we all fell in love with the galaxies best and most fearsome bounty Hunter. His reputation went before him and all feared him. Please if you can read the 'Wagner' boba Fett story to see how ruthless this bounty Hunter was in pursuit of his prey.
This all brings me to this series...three episodes in and we have seen boba ass kicked by sand people, by ninja assassins and now by a fellow bounty Hunter wookie- he has been saved from death in all three by the interventions of others. His fear factor has gone, the series has made him frail and his reputation shattered. The fact he speaks so much also ruins his mysterious aura that attracted us to him for many many years (says a 50 old man who never grew out of the original films).
I loved the mandalorian and the Fett episode where he destroys the stormtroopers and reclaims his armour had me actually crying like a baby with how bad ass he was. Shortly after in the next episode the writers then made him get beat up in a canteen by a fellow mandalorian and my fear of what they might do with this series began.
Apologies for the lengthy first-ever review, but this series is so disappointing on so many levels that it has really upset a die hard fan to the extent that I have had to write this.
The disappointment of what has happened, what could have been (and the budget available) leaves a really sad feeling for anyone who grew up knowing what this character
(Once) represented. I'm truly gutted !
