Breaking Infinity (2023)
AN EXTREMELY SATISFYING FILM...
...Very polished acting with engaging characters, which says as much about director Dean as it says about the actors. Wonderful production
values, cinematography, sound, musical score -
My personal bete noire. More and more movies, even high budget ones, have generic scores, Suspenseful chase scene? Let's have pounding
in-your-face tension-building music. Romantic scene? Cue the violins.
The music in BREAKING INFINITY enhances the narrative without being on-the-nose.
FX is kept a minimum and is tastefully done.
You'd never guess that this was a low, low budget film.
Pay close attention, as you might not realize exactly what you had been watching until you are walking out of the theatre.
Reality (2023)
Not Good Guy/Bad Guy Black & White, But...Reality (Drum Roll Please)
This movie is an almost verbatim re-enactment of an FBI transcript.
These reviews seem to fall into two camps. People who accept moral ambiguity and those who want a clear cinematic delineation between good and evil..
Reality (her real name) is neither a crusading whistleblower nor a traitor, but a woman who'd serve honorably in the U. S. Air Force and becomes increasingly tormented by conscience,. The FBI agents are neither shining knights or cruel thugs but highly trained actors playing FBI agents (well -trained actors themselves) trying to tease out the truth.
In any case, all the characters are real human beings, not movie heros or villains.
The tension IS a slow build, but relentless.
People who want a slam bang action film with clearly obvious good guys versus bad guys, whether Reality OR FBI agents, and virtue triumphing over evil, are going to be sorely disappointed (as shown by the reviews) .
People who want a binary film experience should avoid this brilliant film at all costs.
Those fascinated by the fuzziness of profound moral dilemmas should rush out to see this film as soon as possible.
Rye Lane (2023)
Totally Charming AND Brilliant on Every Level...
...story, performances, production design, music, post.
Brixton is a lively, multi-ethnic neighbourhood in South London, and RYE LANE captures in a fresh and delightfully quirky way the travails of two "iconic" (film's catchphrase) characters as they encounter a panoply of off-the-wall characters to finally, in a Woody Allen couples' sort of way, emerge from their self-limiting patterns .
Permeating every frame is the "Brixton Buzz".
RYE LANE does for South London what NOTTING HILL did for North London (and even has a cameo by Colin Firth!).
The film should definitely go wide theatrical. I went to a screening last night - everyone stayed to the end of the Q&A and hung out afterwards - a telling movie metric. Also, there are hilarious background flourishes that will disappear even on a 52-incher.
Bonus: You'll be citing the pub encounter of the two exes for years to come.
Soundtrack to Sixteen (2020)
A Charming and Delightfully Watchable Film
Very clever and witty dialogue. Well shot. Well acted. Nice sound design.
A great portrayal of contemporary teen society, but what I found most fascinating was the nuanced portrayal of the beta female heroine and her desperate attempts to insinuate herself into the alpha female clique, and all the vicious, humiliating microaggression she endured in her quest.
