American Fiction (2023)
I never give 10 stars
...but the dialogue, screenplay and whole ethos were so waspish, funny and profound = that I couldn't resist.
We always,as a family, watch few of the contenders for awards while everybody is talking about them - and I have never been moved to comment here before.
I loved the green-haired girl in the opening scene but it was so good to see her killed off almost immediately,
But a few adjectives for others we have just seen include (no names)
Way-too-long
Pompous
Arrogant
Slow
Worthy
Dull
Vapid (but fun)
But this one feels like a classic of meta-meta-meta postmodernism, and even another meta if it wins adapted screenplay tomorrow!
Wuthering Heights (2009)
Too modern
An easy to watch and follow rom-com. But without any of the deep dark spiritual mystery of the book.
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
Visually stunning but....
Stunning graphics and beautiful scenery to dazzle us, with amazing life brought to the apes, but the story seemed simperingly mawkish and sentimental. Hollywood at its most Hollywood... I expect we'll look back at these films in 20 years and say "great production (for its time) but were the techie guys really just showing off how they could do an old western 21st century-style..."
Just too many guns for ageing Brits like me.
