Gojira -1.0 (2023)
Now that's what is called movie making!!!
It was absolutely unbelievable to see a Godzilla movie get rave reviews. With McDonald's regulars giving solid ratings to superhero movies, skepticism about Godzilla Minus One was right out there.
But boy was I wrong. This movie is absolutely brilliant from production value to writing to acting to even dialogues, it just hits the highs in everything you can imagine when you think about a solid entertaining movie.
What sets this movie apart from kingkong esque fantasy club is the drama associated with characters. There's a strong sense of human nature and that stays in focus as much as does the other worldly creature.
This movie is a must watch, specially in a theater. It has the promise to leave audience thrilled and entertained.
Great job guys!!
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
Power of Christ compels you to watch this
With today's Netflix level substandard writing, Late Night with the Devil, not only ups the ante significantly, it sets itself apart by being a unique genre in itself.
The pace, direction, acting, screenplay, and most importantly writing will ensure you won't reach out for your phone while watching this unnervingly set itself apart movie.
Although, there are plot holes and there is room to desire more horror and build on top of fear, if you consider this movie a horror, but for it's entertainment value, the movie hits all check marks.
It's truly an art to come up with a concept like this, develop the material to deliver it, and produce it in such a way that it captivates the audience. A remarkable feat for the brothers and their team.
I will watch this movie again and will recommend it to everyone that has appetite to get entertained over Late Night TV Show...
Knox Goes Away (2023)
Gripping, well made, but lots to desire
It's absolutely difficult to believe Michael Keaton has not received an Academy Award till date. Of course, what can be expected from a rigged award ceremony anyway. But if you leave that absurdity aside, Keaton has acted and directed a movie that's very much extertaining to watch - as one can expect from him.
Although the movie is gripping and there is no dull moment, the side plots are poor and don't necessarily match Keaton's characters execution. Something even more complex could've been developed with the theme.
This is no Memento that people will remember this movie for years, but this movie surely proves it's entertainment worth and solidifies Michael Keaton is a very capable director as well.
Worth a watch... On Sunday afternoon...
Ripley (2024)
One Episode Wonder, Then Insomnia Cure
Ripley starts incredibly strong with fantastic cinematography, mysterious acting, and thought through direction. It has enough substance in that first episode that it would compel audience to binge second episode.
And that's where you get acquainted with Netflix level writing. The acting goes down the drain with awkward stares and weird dialogues, not to forget nonsensical plot. It gets so annoying and slow that the episode becomes downright unwatchable.
The ambiance, the sets, the camera shots are brilliant. But as what always happens, the writing reflects mediocrity and the show becomes sluggish beyond comprehension.
Watching Episode one is highly recommended. Rest, you surely can watch to fix your insomnia.
3 Body Problem (2024)
Even feminism and political correctness cannot make E=mc2
Something that will pop out immediately after watching 30mins of first episode is how substandard character development is. If you somehow ignore and overcome that, you would be appalled with kindergarten dialogues and subpar acting as well as casting. Lead actress with her lip job looks more like a playboy model than a scientist.
But what gets to you really hard is how meek and lowly scientists behave. I get it, this is Netflix quality production, which has to be alt left filled with cliches and dorky jokes so that the average westerner can enjoy this show while eating food which they got through their favorite food deliver app.
Book or not, a topic like this needs deep intellect, resonance, and philosophy to realize it's importance - all of which are beyond Netflix's production values.
I've moved on to the Chinese version and although I find the dialogues difficult to understand through subtitles, I do get enough substance to think and encapsulate this thought-provoking TV Show.
I truly wish some other production house in North America would have picked the book for screenplay adaption. We might have actually got something which might have been even better than Tarkovisky's Stalker or Solaris.
Zhou chu chu san hai (2023)
Weirdly stupid and unbelievable but interesting and watchable
The storyline is absolutely unbelievable and unrealistic, Taiwanese or not. But what makes this movie entertaining is the fast edits and well paced story which has a new turn every few minutes.
The cinematography is excellent and the direction seems to be on point as well but the dialogues and delivery are also not the best. Acting is fine but also nothing out of the ordinary.
Some scenes are exceptionally well executed and some are utterly bogus. Movie is long and sometimes, by the end, it felt like a drag.
Overall though, it was very entertaining and enjoyable. Sunday evening and you're looking for something easy, fun, forgettable, and not to intellectual to watch, this movie won't disappoint you.
Clark (2022)
Glorifying Criminals is better TV, but sex makes it even better
Clark is not just cliche after cliche but exceedingly pretentious and utterly unbelievable nonsense that makes its point by fast edits, sex just about every few minutes, and super cool alpha male stunts in every corner.
What's really disappointing is to see how much, we as a society have gone so lowly that we need to watch criminals getting glorified to feel good about watching TV.
If you can fathom first 15mins of this TV show then you probably might actually like what you see over 6 episodes. But if you quickly figure out that how unethical it is to glorify a criminal and even show cop killing as a cool thing, then I'm sure you would be in 1/10 rating camp.
Disappointing and way pretentious!!
Constellation (2024)
Constellation: A TV Show to make you brain dead
Within 10minuts of watching this family drama filled with below par acting, miserable dialogues, and resentful characters, you will be feeling the symptoms of brain aneurysm. Oh wait, you can be safe if you just get this TV show off your TV on priority - trust me on that.
The writers of this hogwash didn't even had the ability to understand basic gravity, forget about the science of weightlessness. But they surely knew how to make a Sci-fi family drama in which there is literally no story just people not being content with one another.
Usually people faint at 4 to 5 Gs. You can literally faint with 1 by watching this crap.
Avoid at all cost.
Self Reliance (2023)
Unique, intriguing, yet somehow unfulfilling
Self Reliance is in today's world of subpar ideas and kindergarten level writing, a very interesting and intriguing movie to watch.
The dialogues and the delivery along with a gloomy music theme makes the movie somewhat of a dark comedy. Acting and direction are good and work well.
What doesn't work in the movie is the classic challenge of how to end a movie wish such interesting yet equally lame storyline. I'm sure the writers must have done a lot of thinking, yet still, things just don't come together in the end all that well. What we see is a forced ending that didn't necessarily makes any point whatsoever.
Watchable, enjoyable as well, but this is not a straight cut comedy, let alone dark.
Gran Turismo (2023)
Blockbuster? Perhaps, it's time to redefine what that means
The movie starts with average teen boy drama and picks up immediately with the disruptive idea pitched to a car maker - solid and intriguing idea indeed.
But what follows those first 10mins is one of the worst cliche ridden acting that can be imagined. Everything about this gas guzzler reeks grease and oil.
What the movie does as a package is that it does tell the story. Editing is incredibly well done, on point, and helps build the pace of this sports movie that seems more like a family drama.
The writing is sloppy and direction is below average. If anyone watching this movie thinks it's great then they have no idea what a great sports movie looks like. You walk out of a movie feeling like you were part of a team - that's what a sports movie does to a movie goer. Not this cringe drama polished, waxed, and detailed to look like a sports movie.
Cuando acecha la maldad (2023)
Solid start, which unfortunately goes nowhere
The movie stars with a great sense of mystery, minimal dialogues which only builds up the somber. But then it downright starts to fall flat. The characters start to scream and shout - clearly some actors overacted. The protagonist acts like a true simpleton throughout the movie. It feels like even a dumb person won't make lame mistakes as he does.
This movie is unique and different though. It doesn't try to copy any other horror movies out there and creates its own horror subgenre. There was significant potential with quality writing and direction.
Unfortunately, what we get is a actually a rotten piece of dish that might have appeared okay but is just not consumable.
A Good Person (2023)
Even cliches and cringe can't help this drama
A Good Person - as the title goes, must be all about family drama, life, fun, joy, sadness, death, and all those aspects of life that can come to our mind.
And yes indeed, this movie has a theme that can make one ponder deeply about how that one incident can change lives and take life's journey in a different direction.
Unfortunately, instead of using strong writing skills and cinematography, the movie makers opted for those below average tried and tested feel good emotions to make average movie goer laugh and cry - the evident cringe.
And the cringe doesn't stop throughout the movie. The actors are good, but the cliched and cringe drama is good for only that over emotional and liberal arts type.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Oscars is a literal joke and so is fake IMDb reviews
Anyone with a rational mind and average intelligence would know what movies, specially the ones considered for awards, have some sort of substance to them. A movie that makes them appreciate the art of film making.
This pure abomination received Oscars for best movie. Undoubtedly, Oscars are rigged and should not even be considered a benchmark for quality movies.
If a movie goer can sit through 10mins of hideous nonsensical hogwash this movie throws at them, then unfortunately there has to be something wrong with them.
I would watch Crounching Tiger Hidden Dragon a 100th time instead of 10mins of this mind-mess.
La chica de nieve (2023)
Watchable, but utterly abysmal
This TV show will keep you engaged enough that you would watch it till the end. However, the loop holes and pure stupidity of characters makes this TV show a true waste.
Lead actress portray the trauma she went through, however, she overdoes it to the point her character seems loathsome. Icing on the cake, everyone include police treat her as if she needs special treatment.
The parents actually did pretty and so did rest of the cast. But lead actress - yeah, even rolling eyes is not enough.
The absurdity is shown in violent scenes and accidents. At times people get shot and killed easily, and at times nothing happens to them. Like really.
Overall, the plot is interesting but execution is below par.
Frank and Penelope (2022)
Don't complain - Just smile, as what this movie will make you
Wannabe Tarantino?
Poor acting?
No script? No story?
Slow? Boring?
Shove all those complaints away and just watch this movie, which for sure will put a smile on your face.
Frank and Penelope is what I call pain and simple entertainment. The movie does what many others have done, it's style, although unique, is not really unique, it's actors act too hard, it's story goes everywhere and has everything, and in the end what you get is a way better compilation that what Hollywood has been churning lately.
From a movie making standpoint, the direction, editing, cinematography, and even writing are pretty good. Everything does come together quite well. But what really keeps this movie on pace is the lead actors, who share great chemistry and show how overacting can be entertaining acting!!
Recommended!!
The Devil's Hour (2022)
Another British thriller that continues the tradition
Indeed. The Devil's Hour is a well made production that keeps the tradition of entertaining British thriller alive.
The acting is on par, so is the direction, and editing. Of course, the cast is "neurodiversified", and they actually do a decent job.
However, the pace of this show is more on the slower side. Romantic angle is forced and police's action will make even the dumbest cop question how lame this show's writing can be. Yeah, we don't expect a crazy head detective like McCogney in True Detective Season 1, but at least our DI should've acted like a professional making the right judgement and not just being righteous.
Yet still, this show is entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Writing is still better than those of Netflix's sub par American production. Thank You writers for not making our child protagonist a "non gender binary" or whatever kid.
1899 (2022)
Sure, watch it, but with your thumb on fast forward!!
1899 has a though provoking SciFi plot that if done properly would've made this show absolutely incredible.
However, what you get is cliche after cliche of cowflop worth of side plots. Bogus and horrendous acting and earth shakingly bad direction. Oh and did I say how lame the writing is.
But if you use fast forward on your remote and skip all the alt left crap and meaningless sub plots, you do get an interesting show, of which season 1 can be completed in under 2hrs. And I'm being liberal with time here.
If you don't use the dial arrow, 1899 promises to give you living misery. You would waste your time and energy and get literally nothing in return.
In other words, 1899 is a diluted version of Matrix meeting Netflix production values. Pure crap with a touch of SciFi.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Just Imagine - What could've been possible...
Maverick was kicked out of Navy, works as a pilot up North ferrying cargo and drinking alcohol. Ice and others don't talk to him anymore. US is attacked and Maverick wants to help. Somehow he gets back in Navy. He comes back with grit to makeup for his mishaps. But is asked to be a trainer not a pilot. He coaches and builds an exceptional team. His team goes to war but loses multiple pilots. Some even get court-martialed for stunt piloting. Everyone puts the blame on Maverick, he can never learn. Maverick goes back to square one or below. Now no one hires him. He somehow meets Ice and requests a review. Ice pity him and gets a mission review in place. Turns out there was a spy who leaked information and Maverick is considered a hero but he puts his team ahead as true heros.
This plot, which I wrote in 5mins, would've still been better than this cringeworthy, nonsense, unrealistic, predictable, and overbudgeted drama that cleary has biased and paid reviews.
Vesper (2022)
A movie that tests film critic's abilities
Vesper is a very interesting movie at all levels. It has a compelling storyline, pretty good acting, decent dialogues, and unmatched graphics.
Just to come up with the CGI content we see in this movie in itself is an achievement. A true Sci Fi movie element and worthy of all the awards out there.
Top it up with the fact that this movie is Indie makes everything about it even more conspicuous.
Yet, Vesper doesn't work and it's not that easy to answer, why?
Although it's filled with cliches, predictable scenes, disjoint set locations, and unrealistic actions with multiple plot hols, what throws it off is shoddy screenwriting and below average direction.
Yet still, Thank God (producers) for not making it a Netflix production.
Under sandet (2015)
A profound perspective on War and Human Connection
Movies like Under sandet make watching movies not only entertaining but also thought provoking.
The film is very well made and it touches various aspects of human psychology including resentment toward other humans due to war and compassion toward others when seeing them suffer.
Acting, cinematography, direction, editing - all are spot on and make Land of Mine (under sandet) very entertaining.
The story does have some cliches and predictable moments, albeit, these can be justified when the story is considered holistically.
This is the kinda movie to watch, discuss, and ponder about for hours.
Under the Banner of Heaven (2022)
Watch this show - To clear your sins
When a book is adopted for television, writers have to make tremendous effort to write scenes, dialogues, and whatnot.
UBH is the show that commands respect just for its writing. The camera work, editing, and direction are also good.
Although, UBH is no True Detective, it does have a decent sense of mystery. However, what makes this show great is the drama genre that it brings out. Religious fanatics, murders, child abuse, biblical phrases, polygamy - this soup if not better, matches The Devil All The Time.
Another great aspect about the show is that it's not a Netflix production - that over righteous, politically correct stance.
The show does drifts in sub plots to make the main story stronger, however, those subplots could've been better.
Better Call Saul (2015)
A TV show with promises - undeliverable
There's a lot of time and effort put in developing BCS and it's visible in acting, direction, editing, and cinematography. What's not been done upto the mark is writing.
Stretching the series to 6 seasons and having unrealistic changes in character's personalities, with no concrete reasoning and storyline makes the show obtrusive.
Yes, it can be watched but it could've been way better.
The Killing (2011)
A murder mystery or a soap opera - Is there an answer?
The Killing starts decently enough to keep one entertained and gripped. Heck, some might even binge watch it just to know who committed the murder.
But, this cringe worthy subpar soap opera had no intention to tell the viewers that. This TV show is the ace of making the viewers pull their hairs. What makes it worst is some subplots that consume whole episodes. This TV show must have been cancelled even before it started.
No, this is not True Detective and No, this is not a crime show. This is a soap opera dubbed murder mystery. Spare your hairs and call it quits before you go bald.
Hold the Dark (2018)
Pure waste of time, money, and talent
There are movies that defy logic, yet have a sense of art to them. Some hate them, some love them. Like Tarkovisky's Mirror.
Then there are absolute garbages like Hold the Dark.
The story is senseless, unrealistic, and utterly abysmal. There is nothing artistic about it. Dialogues are below average and so is direction. But the movie has really good cinematography, editing, and production value.
If you've 2hrs to waste and can untangle yourself from cowflop of a story then you surely must watch it just for the camera work and cinematography. Else, your blood would boil and you would howl like a wolf by the time you're done watching this hogwash.
Hustle (2022)
So, why was this movie made at first place?
Yes, it's not easy to make a sports theme movie. Most plots are tried and even the twists don't work anymore. Yet still, this movie was made. And it's actually well made.
But there just ain't much to see. Keep it simple and watch it on a lazy Sunday afternoon if you just don't have anything else to do.
