Moonfall (2022)
I so wanted to like this movie, but....
I'm someone who loves disaster movies. They are fun, a little cheesy, and usually just plain good entertainment. Seriously, if you don't love a little Will Smith smoking a cigar after battling aliens for Independence; Bruce Willis saving off Armegedon; or Dennis Quaid hiking over the iced over statue of liberty, then "Houston, we have a problem". Yes, I love a good disaster movie. But I didn't love this one at all.
Between the thin plot, bad writting, and big explosions, the makings of what could've been a good disaster movie were all there. But how the typical tropes, story pacing, and plot points were all cut together missed the mark terribly. Its like the film makers didnt have enough faith in the story, cast, or pace of the movie, so they decided to just check off boxes of what may have worked in previos movies and cut it all togther. What we are left here is a garbled mess of a disaster movie that tried to be a fun escape, but instead became a boring stroll.
In the movie, the story didn't work. The cast had no chemistry and were seriously forgettable (which I dred saying being that most of the cast is so incredible and were so memorable in many other movies and shows). The pacing was lack luster and and filled with gaps. And the writing was neither fun, funny, or interesting.
So, as a disaster movie goes, this was nothing to love. Very little to even like. And will be forgotten to history in very short order. Hopefully the next disaster movie can learn from what didn't work in this.
The Batman (2022)
It was good, but way too long, too slow, and....
This is the only Batman movie that I almost fell asleep in. Even my son was getting a bit droopy eyed. The movie itself was good, but it was unnecessarily long and filled with such a slow pacing that took away from the story. There just wasn't enough story there to warrant the length and pace.
Basically this Batman is detective Batman without much kick some booty Batman. I liked the detective angle, but the solve was pretty basic and in the end was inconsequential. (Sort of spioler warning) -
Batman could have stayed home, done nothing, and in the end it would all likely ended the same. So what was the point of this three hour movie? Well, certainly not rewatchability.
