The Great Gatsby (2013)
After a year of waiting.... I am soooooooooo not disappointed
I read the book last year, loved it, have read it two more times since, and after seeing every trailer for the movie I just could not wait for it. I was a little worried that my expectations would be too high and that the movie wouldn't reach them, but it definitely did. I loved it. The direction is a bit flashy and over-the-top as most Luhrman stuff is, but only for about the first 40 minutes or so. Once Gatsby and Daisy are reunited, the film has so much heart and soul and the film intensifies all the way up until the end. It was sad, tragic, and best of all, it carries the same themes and motifs from the book. If you're not familiar with the book you may question some of the stuff in the film, but I honestly think if you love the book, and have been waiting for a GREAT Gatsby movie (I didn't like the '74 one much) that is very true to the book, has some great acting (Leo's Oscar-worthy here, folks, and Mulligan, Maguire, and Edgerton give some of their best performances I've ever seen, and newcomer Elizabeth Debecki is just wonderful as Jordan Baker), beautiful visuals, fun music (the music here is cleverly done and didn't feel TOO out-of-place, and the mix of old-school and jazz symbolically works here in my opinion) and a basically over-all understanding of the book and it's meanings, I feel you will not be disappointed.
Even as just a film, I do believe this film will become a true classic years from now, despite it's less-than-stellar box office intakes or poor-mixed reviews it's getting, I feel over time this will get good word of mouth and the general public MIGHT learn to love it over time.
But we'll see. I loved it. 3D was well-executed too, imo. 9.5/10
Incendies (2010)
Powerful and mesmerizing
This astounding movie will stay with you for a long time. So many reviews have been posted, anything I could say would be a repeat: this is how movies should be made. I didn't mind the subtitles, I only hope my family will sit through them, because it is definitely worth it.
Although it did not have the gut-wrenching impact that movies such as Sophie's Choice and the Eagle Has Landed had on me, and I did not feel the intensity of the emotions other reviewers reported feeling, I deeply appreciated and enjoyed the dramatic impact of the unfolding of the mystery. I believe Incendies will stay with me over the years as the other movies have because of how well it is made.
The talent of all the main actors was such that I will remember them as characters in the story, not as actors playing the roles. I appreciated the artistic elements, the choice of set pieces that gave a really authentic look to each setting. It was refreshing not to have Hollywood fake-y white teeth ruining the look of working class and rural characters. However, I do feel the make-up artists, and perhaps other techniques, could have given a better sense of the actual age of a few characters at various points in their life and that would have given the audience gain a better sense of the actual time span. It was a small distraction to make mental allowances for that while the scenes unfolded.
My only notable frustration was I couldn't find a reference to the identity of performer who provided the marvelous ethereal mezzo-soprano singing at the ending credits, and the composer and piece. (Perhaps it was in French and I missed it?) I finally found out the singer is Ciara Hendrick. I hope it will be possible to get a recording of her performance on the soundtrack. I found a Youtube recording that displayed the German lyrics, however, it sounded like a different performer: the quality of singing was not as satisfying.
Vampires Suck (2010)
I felt like I was sitting through the first two twilight films again but with more CRAP added in
Okay, here's my review It was basically the EXACT SAME TWILIGHT MOVIES only condensed into an hour + 20 and with a bunch of LAME jokes (celebrity references, pop culture references, fart jokes, unfunny sex jokes) and really it didn't seem to make fun of twilight the only thing that really made fun of it was how "Becca" acted just like Kristin Stewart and Jacob "contract" line and then the ending. The ending was so stupid. Instead of italy they're at a prom and Ed+Bella get engaged and he "supposedly" turns her into a vampire but then edward is killed by a buncha Jacob fans and the movie ends.
So, I really can't compare it to the others, it felt like THE EXACT SAME THING as twilight with the SAME camera angles and SAME music only with Aaron/Jason unfunny humor. Not ONCE did I laugh, but nor did I laugh with any of their other films.
final verdict, not sure what rating to give this, it just felt like a very long youtube video (Ive seen better actually) and it looks like twilight fans are actually gonna enjoy it more than non-twilight fans, so sorry.
Watchmen (2009)
Not too bad.
Although this movie is not exactly what I would call a "ride" or "fun" or anything like that, it certainly is a damn good piece of cinematography. It's definitely no spider-man, fantastic four, or hellboy, but it is better than the dark knight, which I found pleasing. After watching 300 though, I found this movie a little slow considering all the slow-motion (which got annoying after a while,) the effects and action were still well-done. To me, this movie is the kind of movie where you have to watch it on the big screen before you watch it at home. I saw an early screening in a regular theater, so I plan on watching it again in iMax, even though this is not one of those action flicks you can watch several times like spider-man or transformers. Either way, if you've read the Graphic Novel I can assure you you will possibly enjoy this, like I did, if not, you might be thinking "where's all the action?" This isn't one of those superhero films you enjoy for the action, it's one you enjoy for the cinematography.
Alice in Wonderland (1999)
I want to kill myself.......
.......after watching this. OMFG it was horrible. I felt like watching a cross between Rocko's modern life and teletubbies. The effects were HORRIBLE the Acting was HORRIBLE and every thing about the movie was just HORRIBLE!!!!!! As we all know the plot is about a stupid god-ugly girl who sees someone who looks a WHOLE LOT like a teletubbie in a rabbit suit. There was the worst effects ever, like a rat turning into a man, a stupid ugly queen who kept saying "off with there heads" every other breath. I couldn't stand the movie, and worst of all, noticed that I OWN it. I found it in my video collection, and this very second as I'm writing this I'm lighting a fire to burn it. Please, do me a great big favor and stick with Disney's masterpiece. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PIECE OF CRAP!!
Eagle Eye (2008)
A little TOO thrilling for me
After watching "The Dark Knight" with some friends of mine, they all said it was too thrilling with non-stop action. I thought it barely had ANY of this, which is why I didn't like it. "Eagle Eye has a whole lot of it that I wish it would slow down a bit.
The story focuses around a boy who works at a photocopy machine store named Jerry Shaw (Shia LeBeouf) who just finds out that his twin brother died. After coming home to his apartment he discovers a lot of illegal weapons and such in his room. That's when he gets "The Mysterious Phone Call" about the FBI coming. He soon starts to wonder if they meant to ship the stuff to his brother whom the FBI thought was a terrorist. He finds himself getting a bunch of phone calls from a female computer voice commanding him what to do and where to go. So Jerry and a lady he finds along the way who has just sent her son on a train to the white house to perform for the president learns that if SHE doesn't do what the computer tells her to, then her son dies. So the computer is basically trying to lead Jerry to her to unlock her, because she is an extremely smart computer created by a secret group called "Eagle Eye". There's a bit of a weird twist in the middle, and the ending just kinda ends. I thought there was too much action and suspense for any character development, and a lot of the time you just want to pause the movie to catch your breath. The acting was fairly good for what little there was, and a very creepy death scene that made me gasp out loud. So if you're a fan of Shia or Spielberg, or you want a fun action movie, Eagle Eye is probably what you're looking for.
