A League of Their Own: Perfect Game (2022)
Fresh Air
This show is phenomenal. In a time of resurgence of the "bury your gays" trope, this show tells queer stories with delicacy and care that is hard to find these days. This show is immersive, comedic, patient, and lovable. The writers do a phenomenal job of bringing accurate diversity to this story, and highlights Maxine "Max" Chapman's journey with baseball and struggles as a black woman in WWII America just as much as they show the Peaches' journey. Even when tackling heavy and dark topics, they make it easy to digest for people who are not as informed on queer treatment in history. As a queer woman, this show reminds me queer stories are just as important, perhaps even more so, as cishet stories. This show showcases the history of the AAGPBL that people were too afraid to talk about. And they do it flawlessly. I will be recommending this show to everyone who is living and breathing. Kudos to Abbi Jacobson and everyone involved with this fantastic revival of A League of Their Own. It is truly a home run.
Killing Eve: Hello, Losers (2022)
Homophobia in 2022
I literally made an IMDB account just to rate this episode I hated it so much. The series finale for Killing Eve had so much potential. So much it could have done. It completely missed the mark. Everything it could've did right, it did wrong. I would've been okay with it if 1) it was not rushed acceptance of love ending in death and 2) it made sense within the story. It is, quite frankly, disgusting and incredibly offensive to have yet another show destroy a queer, popular, and unapologetic love story shown through Eve and Villanelle ten minutes after we finally got their declaration of love and adoration. We see the happiest and most at peace Villanelle and Eve have ever been. The fact that Laura Neal said (SPOILER) Villanelle's death created a rebirth of Eve makes their love out to be something worthy to be ashamed of. This ending said to me that wlw relationships are not deserving of happy ending. This finale fulfilled another wlw trope of death/separation as soon as the couple get their happy moments. It painted Villanelle's feelings and loyalty towards Eve burdensome for Eve. That is was abnormal and needed to be abandoned. And Neal did just that. I understand this show took the first Codename Villanelle book and ran with the plot, but good lord did they. They didn't even consult the source material. I doubt they even truly consulted the queer voices in their writing room. This finale has left an incredibly sour taste in my mouth, and has ruined years of loyalty and love for this show. It is a shame that now every other genuine and beautiful moment in the show is tainted by this horrific and poorly written ending. Do better.
