Love Again (2023)
Heartfelt
This is a charming, warm movie. Old school & welcome!
Romcoms by nature are formulaic. This one is imbued with pathos. It deals with loss and heartbreak as the foundation for the relational building blocks to come. Sam & Priyanka are not only gorgeous, they are fine actors who bring sorrow and heartbreak to life. They also have great comedic timing. They're wonderful together! When Mira & Rob meet you can see their attraction, their awkwardness, their shyness. It feels real. There are some lol moments and a few tears, too.
Sam Heughan is a revelation. He lights up & dominates the screen, no small thing with Priyanka as his partner. The camera loves him! He's really funny but also very believable when his heart is breaking. He has a huge range of emotions.
Priyanka is very relatable. She brings depth, vulnerability and warmth to Mira. She is so incredibly beautiful!
Celine is Celine in her movie debut - she & her music do not disappoint. Her involvement in the story adds a different unusual flavor. She actually tells her story of the loss of her husband. It's very moving.
The supporting actors all deserve mention. Mira's sister and Rob's two working comrades are adorable! And funny!
Nick Jonas was also very amusing in his bit part. That he's Pri's husband in RL makes it more so. He's quite good!
I left feeling emotionally stirred in a good way.
I'm giving this a 9 simply because I did not fully believe the chemistry between Mira & John, her dead fiancee. There was such a difference with Rob!
This is a move worth seeing - again and again.
First Light (2010)
Brilliant RAF Docu/drama
"People say to me how do you remember these things? How do you expect me to forget? You don't. You can't.... The experiences of being a Spitfire fighter pilot in the battle of Britain stay with you forever. And you can't do anything about it." Geoffrey Wellum
This was so affecting! That it was true made it all the more poignant to watch. The fact that Wellum was teenager when he entered the RAF makes me realize all over again what the people of England were willing to do to protect their homes and their land. They sent their boys.
The story was told well. You saw what little training the RAF had. You saw their raw courage. You felt their tension and watched them deal with the losses of each of their own the best they could. You saw them fly exhausted into battle over and over and over again. You saw what it cost them mentally and emotionally.
The cast was wonderful. Sam Heughan did an amazing job as Wellum. You saw him change from boy to man. You could see and feel his emotions. He fully embodies the character.
Shout out to Gary Lewis and Ben Aldridge as squadron leaders. The rest of the cast was wonderful as well. Very believable.
It's a good thing to see this kind of movie and remind ourselves that what we enjoy and even deride today cost the ultimate sacrifice of millions. We must never forget...
Outlander: I Am Not Alone (2022)
Heart in my throat brilliant!
Forget those sneering, derisive reviews. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, of course, but they are not the last word.
This was Diana's favorite and I and see why.
Boy, oh boy, did they do her proud!
In fact, this will join the ranks of iconic OL episodes.
It had everything you could want in a finale. There was
action, suspense, sublime intimacy (especially from
Heughan and Balfe), villains, surprising heroes
and virtuoso performances. Jamie Payne is a brilliant, masterful director. There were some unusual shots and beautiful lighting.
The last scene was vindicating, moving and epic.
But my heart vied with the lump in my throat the whole time.
I was deeply moved and can't give enough credit
to the whole Outlander team.
This is television viewing at its finest!
Outlander: The World Turned Upside Down (2022)
Jaw dropping!
Never a dull moment! OMG! So much happens in this episode that you do feel that everything is being turned on its head. My eyes were glued to the screen.
This episode serves up widespread illness on the Ridge, heartache, fear, tenderness, betrayal and a shocking ending.
In addition, there is a scene between Jamie and Claire that is one of the best of the whole series. The nuances and the emotional rise and fall of their conversation is transfixing. I've watched it time and again. The Heughan/Balfe performances (which are so real) were perfectly in tune to the situation and to each other. Keep your eyes on Sam's. His body is mostly still as he actively listens but his eyes are brimming with quicksilver responses.
I've never been more engaged with a series and this episode is one I'll watch again and again.
Outlander: Sticks and Stones (2022)
Brilliant!
OUTLANDER IS NOT DISNEY! Those that have issues with this show need to take it up with the author. Like the Harry Potter series, it gets darker not only because that is what is happening in the world around the Frasers, but because they are dealing with mounting personal troubles as well. That makes for excellent story.
And what a story! This episode covers a lot of ground. As the series races towards next week's finale we see the balance of power shift unjustly from the Frasers to the self-righteous residents of the Ridge. Makes you want to yell at the screen.
The acting is superb from all members of the cast, but especially from Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe who always cast their spell. In one scene in particular they play off each other with such creative synergy they explode off the screen and into your heart. It's hard to believe they are acting. You totally believe they are a married couple of long standing that have weathered tremendous vicissitudes, with their transcendent love in tact.
This unique chemistry is still the best I've ever seen.
The story is enthralling! Heartrending. It even has some lighthearted moments. It is everything you could want in a penultimate episode.
