Fish Out of Water (2005)
Even a bad experience may become a spice of your future happy life.
The main character is a man who goes to work by boat. One day, as he was preparing his boat as usual, a beautiful blonde woman spoke to him. The woman also wanted to go to work by boat. The man welcomed her with open arms and decided to take her on board as well. But that was a mistake. The number of people who wanted to use man's boat increased, and the man's enjoyable commute to work became less enjoyable. I am sure that every adult has had these kind of experience at least once. If possible, we should avoid such a thing as disliking something we used to love. It was good that the protagonist found something else to enjoy. Even a bad experience may become a spice that your future self can enjoy. I thought it was a good film to keep having hope.
Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times (2017)
Beautiful story
I thought this film showed the endless possibilities of life. Have you ever met same stranger twice? I have not. I may have met them, but I don't remember. The film claims to have done that near impossible thing five times. When they were baby, child, looking for a job, adult, and an old person.
I found it very beautiful that they tussle and sometimes help each other, and that their relationship keeps changing. In the real world, discrimination is still rampant based on skin color, gender, country of origin, and so on. If possible, I hope that all people will become adults who can think that discrimination is a foolish thing to expect in the end, just like the relationship between these two people.
The Lunch Date (1989)
I love this kind of movie.
It is a story about a white woman who mistakes the black man for a thief because the food she ordered was the same as the food ordered by him. In the end, the misunderstanding is cleared up, but the man, whom the woman had mistakenly disrespected has already left, which was strangely realistic. A similar short movie has recently appeared on YouTube. I was very surprised to find out that it was actually a very historic story of a misunderstanding. I think the movie made me think a little bit about how to deal with both white women and black men, since this was a time when there was still a lot of discrimination against black people. It was very funny and if you like comedies, I recommend you to watch this movie.
Lifted (2006)
New Pixar
I thought it was the beginning of a new Pixar movie.
This movie can be viewed from two perspectives. I am a college student, so I was able to see this movie from both a child's and an adult's point of view. From a child's point of view, you can feel the impatience of the main character, who tries his best but the scores are not good enough. He is always looking at the adults' faces, thinking if his doing right things. From an adult's point of view, I could see my subordinate's inability to understand simple things, my position of having to grade someone who is in a hurry, common sense telling me that they should change buttons. I thought this movie was great because even though there are only two characters in it, I could feel for both of them.
Spielzeugland (2007)
At first, I thought this was another movie that was about Germany and Jews
At first, I thought this was another movie that was about Germany and Jews.
Indeed it was, but it was not the same as others. There were two main characters, mother and a son who are not Jews. I didn't know whether they took it in their own hands to save the son's friend or only the mother did, but I thought it was a very courageous rescue. The piano part seemed to say that both families are rich. They live in the same apartment building so I think the difference between both families was only religion. One part that made me concerned is that the boy said he is a blood brother of his friend. If he said "brother", I can understand that he is a brother-like friend but I couldn't understand "blood brother." It might mean one of them is an adopted child.
I am Japanese. In Japan, the school won't teach us about WW2. Only those who want to learn about WW2 can learn. By watching these movies, I surely thought that Japanese people should learn about WW2 an Germany's treatment of Jews and also China and Korean problem in WW2.
I think this movie, Toyland, is very important to those who don't know about WW2 since it shows the nice parts and bad parts of Germany.
Born with It (2015)
Shocked
When I saw this movie, I was shocked at how black people live in Japan. I knew it was just a movie but it had something of a believable persuasive power. There was something worthy of belief, even though there was no depiction of the data coming out or that fact. Perhaps there is a deeper psychological reason involved in why I believe this. I have always believed that there is no such thing as a person who does not discriminate at all. This is because there has never been a time since the dawn of history when people did not discriminate. Therefore, many Japanese people, including myself, may discriminate against black people deep down, although not to the same extent as the mean boy in the movie.
I am thinking of writing my graduation thesis on "discrimination" because it is something that is deeply related to myself too. Many Japanese say that Japanese are not directly discriminated against as long as they do not leave Japan. So they don't have interest in discrimination problems. Moreover, they hate people who talk about discrimination. They also perceive pro-foreigner Japanese who try to get them to quit discriminating against foreigners as enemies who want to take away their privileges and say, "Get out, this is Japan. "
By Watching Japanese I feel sad when I see the Japanese response to Naomi Osaka. There are a certain number of Japanese who call her "Kronbo" or "Chibikuro Sambo". Sambo is the name of a child who was the main character in a novel written when black people were still slaves. It is an abominable story that is now forbidden to be read to children. Japan is not an ideal land where there is no discrimination, but rather a discriminatory country that tolerates discrimination on a national scale. By watching this film, I feel once again the dark part of Japan. I strongly felt that we must speak out against what we know is wrong and sometime ignore the peer pressure.
J'attendrai le suivant... (2002)
Not feeling happy by watching it.
If you are of European descent, you will probably like this film because of the twist and turn. However, I thought this movie would not be accepted in my country, where movies that do not affect the viewer in a bad way are praised. As an Asian, my pity for the main female character prevails over the surprise of the twist. The foreign people I saw the movie with said the twist was wonderful. However, having watched only Chinese, Japanese, and Korean dramas and movies, I did not feel comfortable watching this movie in which a woman is humiliated in front of many people and laughed at. I think it is difficult to enjoy this movie if you do not make an effort to understand other cultures, because it is a movie that incorporates the unique culture of France.
I think this film is a film that people will like or dislike intensely.
Knick Knack (1989)
Beautiful Animation
This animated short film is directed by famous director, John Lasseter. He used yo be a chef creative officer of both Walt Disney animation studio and pixer animation studio. He also created such as toy story, Bugs Life, Cars, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., Wally, Mr. Incredible, and other. This short film look exactly like toy story animation and I love it.
This film might be short but it has strong message. It is a very worthwhile movie, so if you are not sure whether to see it or not, please do so!
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
REAL
This movie is about a married couple of English man and Japanese women who live in Japan. A Couple didn't had children. One day when an man finished his job, a English teacher, he found out that one of student haven't went home yet. He welcomed student to his house writing piece of paper ' Dear student's mom Call me when you see this. He is with me'.
I thought the protagonist would be framed as a kidnapper since Japan is mono-ethnic country with an exclusive to national identity. But that didn't happened and I am pretty happy about that. One thing that made me happier is that all character was so realistic. As a Japanese I can say this movie is written by someone that knows japan pretty much. I hope Japanese feel more open to foreigners in the near future.
Father and Daughter (2000)
People can't go against time, but love could
When we watched father and daughter, none of our group members understood the story. But we all felt kind of nostalgic watching it. The movie didn't have color and because of that, Masaya hated this movie. I think the movie didn't have color, lyrics, and voice because it wanted to make people think about what's happening in the movie by themselves. I've watched this movie four times after class and thought it was a movie with various perspectives depending on the way of thinking. At first, I thought the movie was about the daughter's life. Next I thought it has fathers view too so I thought the story was the same as the title. But when I found out that it has many meanings when the father died, I realized it wasn't just a life story. Like the Grimms' Fairy Tales, I thought it was a story of a system that educates people by reading. From this movie, I got a message "Grief of losing a loved one". I think the author wanted people to understand their father's love before losing one. Hope she could live a long life in heaven with her father.
