Topsy-Turvy (1999)
Strange Fun.
Not knowing much about the history of Gilbert and Sullivan, I rented this and was surprised at how much deeper and darker they were! If you just look at their 'comic opera's' you'd never guess at the backstory, which is fascinating. Mr. Broadbent is a superlative actor- they all are, but he's my favorite- and the chance to see the music performed was wonderful. Not knowing much about Mike Leigh and his films, I can't comment on how this one is in the context of his work, but you can bet I'll rent the rest of his films soon!
Rushmore (1998)
A fine film.
I enjoyed this film a great deal, having had some experience with private schools and all the shenanigans that transpire there! Bill Murray gives us one of his 'gruff yet tender' performances that never fail to enchant, and the lovely Olivia Williams matches him emotion for emotion, but the film really belongs to young Jason Schwartzman, who all but steals every scene he's in. Hilarious and dark, this is one of the best 'indy films' I've seen!
Jude (1996)
Lovely but dark.
This is one of my favorite books by Thomas Hardy, so I rented this with trepidation- usually I'm let down by filmic adaptations, but in this case I was pleasantly surprised. Well, as pleasantly surprised as one can be for an unpleasant and difficult story such as this. It's a brutal experience, but worth going through, and all the actors are marvelous indeed. But save it for a night when you want a good cry, or just to feel sorry for yourself. It won't (or will) disappoint!
Richard III (1995)
One of the best.
I love this movie! Sir Ian is a marvel as the title character, and the supporting cast does a fantastic job! The re-setting of the story in a fascist country works like a scary charm, the music and photography is all great. Overall a wonderful experience, and a lovely way to expose yourself or your children to the wonders of "The Bard".
