$40k Broad Physical Comedy!
14 June 2023
I like broad comedy, but more than that I like talent (no matter the genre). Not sure what I'm more impressed with-that they did a movie for 40K (according to budget on IMDb) or that it was a broad slapstick comedy, a rom-com, and a coming-of-age all wrapped up in one.

I didn't like the main character at first until I realized what a bubble came out of (and how ridiculous he actually was) and how he slowly developed into an actual real human being after interacting with someone other than a weird-looking E. T. doll. Overall, I legit belly-laughed at least 5 times. I don't like to drop spoilers so I won't list the moments. Plus everyone's taste is different.

You start off with this "kid" who has probably never even put his own ketchup on his burger and go from there to "adulthood" in the most absurd, ridiculous manner, all while being guided by a saint (a great actress that I've never seen in anything else).

What drove me to this movie was the lead actor Will Klipstine from another film. His acting in this movie is completely opposite. Good range.

This is a movie that no one will ever see. But should! For 40K it deserves a 100 out of 10. Highly recommend if you like absurd comedy and/or broad physical comedy and/or juvenile romance.

The star is intense!
5 May 2023
Someone give this guy a drink to take the edge off. To say he's got an edge is putting it lightly. There is some truth to what some viewers are saying that we don't find out until later what his deal is but he's yelling, screaming, crying, fighting, laughing, suspicious of everyone to the point of paranoia, looking suspicious to everyone in the "town" (if that's what we're gonna call it), in flashbacks with his daughter he's normal and happily playing, he's all over the map. At the end he is finally humbled and speechless. It was that moment that made me take a deep breath and realize OK this guy can act.

Intensity works in both comedy and drama
3 May 2023
I'm a huge fan of the actor who plays Blackbeard (I'm not going to embarrass myself by trying to get the name correct). He is intense and yet completely hysterical at the same time. He is intensely watchable Which is what makes me Think someone is what other people refer to as "charismatic." I really enjoy him as a writer and Director too. I enjoyed the Thor that he did and I enjoyed Jojo Rabbit. He's a perfect example of someone who shows that intensity can work both in comedy and drama. I would love to see him play the leading role in a movie. I'm sure he would kill it in a comedy but I bet he could do really well in a drama as well.

My favorite Mel Gibson film
3 May 2023
I'm a fan of super intense acting performances. Intensity to me is what I think people call star power or charisma. Lethal Weapon is one of those movies where his intensity is on full display but he has a different kind of thing going on here. He's a tad older, wiser, gets accosted personally and his livelihood, so his intensity is of a different ilk. He's crazy in Lethal Weapon but in Braveheart he's completely intense while being completely sane at the same time. All of his actions in this film are justified. You're rooting for him from frame one. This is the best film he's ever been in and possible ever will be.

Intensity at its finest
3 May 2023
Nothing is more watchable than an intense performance. He and his intensity were born to be in the movies. He's also a damn good actor. I admit I had to watch other movies of his before I was ready to crown him the title of "good actor" but I'm ready to say Mel Gibson isn't just a good actor but a damn good one. He's intense almost to the point of crazy. His eyes get this look and you know something's about to go down. But he also has other emotions that are intense too. He takes all of them to the max. A very watchable actor and maybe one of the most watchable actors of all time which brings me to Braveheart because I just watched both. I'll put my Braveheart review on that one.

Crowning performance to an amazing career
3 May 2023
This is the antithesis to the cocky characters of his career and yet it's the crowning achievement to a 35 year long (now it's been 65 years!) career as one of the all time great A-listers. Second only to John Wayne as the longest A-Lister to be on the A-list (although Tom Cruise just broke both of their records), Clint Eastwood was the man with no name. He didn't want to come to your town. You forced him to. He didn't want to be the hero. It was forced upon him. Same in this movie. He's got one last hurrah in his Western lore and if you're new to Clint Eastwood, watch how it's done in all its glory!

Some people get better at acting with age
20 April 2023
Costner admitted early in his career he was not an "artist", but rather a commodity, or star. I don't disagree. He was a handsome face but he always had an authenticity in his performances too. Very natural on camera. In Open Range, he's at his best. He's the type of guy who is just comfortable in front of the camera and you look at him and feel he's being honest. An honest performance that makes you feel he's not acting in any way. He reminds me of Gary Cooper in that way. A guy who isn't bullsh**ting and you believe every word he says. I love him in this movie. I love the way he speaks to the woman he can't express his love to. I love her in this too.

I've switched my opinion on Tom Cruise (actually a while ago)
20 April 2023
I used to think he was a stiff actor, with a lot of forced performances. Born on the Fourth of July was a huge exception, though. I thought he was excellent in that. Even in Magnolia, which was praised, I felt him forcing his emotions a bit. He just wanted it so bad. Somewhere along the line his performances relaxed a bit. His intensity is still there, which is a GREAT thing for an actor to have, but that forced or stiffed quality was gone. He finally just became the cool cat movie star that he is. And now we come to this. Top Gun Maverick. The culmination of all the dues he's paid and all his past performances. This is his masterpiece performance. The quintessential Tom Cruise movie. In all its glory.

Great movie but people don't talk enough about Sam Rockwell
20 April 2023
This is the first time I ever saw this fantastic actor. There is something very interesting going on behind his eyes and compelling about everything he does when he is on screen. Do people know how truly rare that is? He's watchable from the moment he shows up to the moment he's gone and you can't wait for him to show up again. That is serious start quality. I have sense come to love him in everything he's been in. I even watched a superhero movie because he was in it lol. Just kidding. Superhero movies have good and bad just like every other genre. I love great acting and great actors. Sam Rockwell is one of my favorites.

Possibly one of the greatest performances ever
20 April 2023
Nic Cage is hit and miss with me. This is him at his best. His pain, apathy, hopelessness, helplessness, pathetic-ness (if that's a word) is heart wrenching. You can't help but pity him but at the same time you know he's on the correct path -- for him. It's sad. But beautiful at the same time because of his relationship with her. The thing that makes this performance so amazing to me is that he's usually such a loud, boisterous character, sometimes to the point of obnoxiousness but here he is so understated. If it's not the best performance of all time, it is definitely his best performance. For me.

He earned me over the years
20 April 2023
I used to make fun of him. He talked like a surfer. He had little to no emotional stake in his performances. I could do a perfect impression of him. A dumb surfer who just happens to be in the right place at the right time and get dumb luck. But somewhere along the line this dude changed. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's that he just says less. And he knows a little bit (or a lot) more about himself. He knows his strengths and weaknesses. This guy has really earned me as a fan. I have to eat my crow like a good boy and say Keanu Reeves is a much better actor and understands what it takes to be a great film actor.
