Brickleberry (2012)
The show ever made.
"Brickleberry" is one of the cartoons ever made. The scripts are written, the jokes have punchlines, and the characters are animated. When watching this show, I can tell that I am indeed watching something, because Brickleberry goes, not particularly hard or anything, but nonetheless, it goes.
Like the animation in Brickleberry, my face is incredibly unexpressive when I'm consuming this piece of media. When I watch Brickleberry, I can think of several other better shows, but I can also think of worse ones. This show definitely exists, I can say that for sure. However, the stunning lack of things accomplished in these 3 seasons of television are baffling.
The creators of Brickleberry had some hidden talent, maybe they should've kept it that way.
Velma: Velma (2023)
A bucket of lost potential and no strong feelings
I can already see this review getting completely ratioed in the likes/dislikes for rating it anything above a 2 and honestly I can't blame anyone for that, while I think a show like "Fairview" deserves the hate that this show received more tenfold, I also can't blame anyone for the visceral reaction they had to this.
Coming as someone with no attachment to the Scooby Doo franchise, Velmas inital hour was completely... tolerable. Not funny at all, almost every single joke missed, but I liked the visuals and some of the characters (specifically Norville, I unironically like them and I am not embarrassed to admit that) were alright. Velma is a bit of an ass, and Fred/Daphne are huge asses, which honestly I'm alright with. I like asshole characters to some extent, they can be incredibly entertaining and as someone whos never cared for Scooby Doo I can't really complain about character assassination (though, I get why a fan would care) Bojack Horseman was a lot more unlikable in the first episode than Velma was here for instance to me, and that show turned out excellent.
Velma feels like the type of show that would've benefited tenfold from a few things:
More respect to it's audience
No relation to Scooby Doo or any other franchise
Jokes that are actually funny
If Velma did all of the things listed above. I would definitely be on board with this show, and that's where Velma gets me. This show is salvageable, and that hurts more than a show like Fairview, I can genuinely imagine a world where an improved take on a show like this could be an absolute banger. But the end result is just, whatever y'know?
For me, Velma was a middle of the road experience, I'd love to be able to proudly rate this a 1/10, or have this super diverse take about how it's a 10/10 or whatever. But I can't fit into either catagory, Velma provokes barely any emotion out of me and the emotions it does provoke are more of "Wow! I wish this was a much better show!". While Velmas premiere gets a 5/10 from me, don't take that as a sign of it being worth watching. Unless I hear about significant improvement, I'll be tuning out of this for now.
Adult Swim Yule Log (2022)
Not a perfect movie, but a really great experience
I had so much fun with this man, the less you know about this, the more fun it is to watch. I found a promo of this online and immediately knew I had to see what it was about, and it definitely didn't disappoint. The end product is flawed, you could probably read it apart. But my god, was the experience watching this purely mesmerizing. I came into this wanting a surreal, unpredictable piece of media. And I got exactly that, the film expertly raises the absurdity as it goes on, and the more absurd things got, the more invested I was. This was a really fun watch and while I don't know if I'll ever return to this, I really enjoyed my experience.
Epic Rap Battle Parodies: Vault Boy vs Cole Phelps (2012)
Better than "Ozymandias"
The single greatest piece of television conceived by mankind. Vault Boy vs Cole Phelps is truly a perfect piece of media, every line was delivered with such perfection it almost feels like a dream, but no, it isn't. The writing is absurdly good, I genuinely believe this to be one of the best written works in the history of the universe. Nothing I have ever seen has or ever will compare. The editing? Amazing as well, the explosion effect when Cole Phelps said "freaking megaton" never fails to give me chills. I have to say, Epic Rap Battle Parodies is the greatest achievement in television drama history, and we are better for it.
Mr. Robot (2015)
Mr. Robot is my favorite piece of media ever made.
I tend to have this habit where, I'll experience something, and immediately claim to to be my "new favorite thing" or one of my favorites. Then slowly simmer down over time. And once I noticed that I began downplaying how I felt about certain works when I immediately saw them. But for this one, the emotional impact the ending has left on me and how amazing the entire show was I just can't do that. This is my favorite TV show of all time, and I can't think of a single piece of media that can top it. Not Breaking Bad, not Bojack Horseman, not one of the many videos games I've played. This is it, I've finally found something I can definitively call my favorite. And I couldn't feel any better.
