Ninjago: Dragons Rising (2023)
Good introduction to a promising series.
Don't let some of the reviews fool you. Some of them bring up points like "the storyline is somewhat rushed", but they seem to forget that this is the first part of the first season, so the character and story arcs are not completed yet. The finale is great and leaves on a good note with the villian still intact and new concepts and lore which are introduced.
Although I don't specifically agree with some of the new concepts introduced like new elemental powers, I can get behind it.
I do think the merge is one of the best things to happen to the series mostly because it enriches it, and adds a plethora of ideas for the show. The show has been drying up for some time, and this was very needed.
This series is comedic and funny at times but also emotional when it needs to be and it all comes together for an enjoyable season of Ninjago.
However their are issues, that mostly lie in the pacing which can be slow or fast. Particularly the first half which I found to be a little to slow. It was enjoyable but the first 3 episodes don't really contribute all that much to the overall plot. They're still good introductions to the characters and the new merged world, but I wish it had a little more to do with the overarching plot.
Some of the new characters introduced were great. My favorite new character so far has to be sora. An emotional backstory, filled with betrayals, and her backstory directly contributes to the plot.
Imperium is an amazing villian empire, because we know how it works, what the people think about think about the place, and how they are brainwashed to obey empress beatrix because of their upbringing.
I'm quite impressed with the series considering one of the main writers (Tommy Andreas) has left the series, and it could be hard to fill his gap, but I think kevin Burke and doc Wyatt did great jobs.
Overall this is a very beefy season, that leaves a lot of room for future storylines and seasons, and introduces some good lore and amazing characters, while also not forgetting to leave the ninja behind.
Barry: all the sauces (2022)
What has this show become?
Perhaps I just don't have experience with relationships and how they work, and I understand Sally still experiences trauma from the time with her husband, but to me it feels off. Barry in no way was justified for yelling at Sally a few episodes earlier, but Sally breaking up with him because of it?
To me barry has usually been fairly nice to Sally albeit some minor setbacks that were usually in the beginning of season 1. After that point, their relationship only get closer and stronger so to me after another minor setback it seems odd she breaks up because an acting friend says two sentences to her about Barry being a violent guy and she decides to break up with him a few minutes later? It genuinely makes no sense to me and only makes Sally from being unlikeable to unbearable.
Arcane: League of Legends: The Base Violence Necessary for Change (2021)
Rushed, poor dialogue
I cannont stress at how bad and generic the dialogue is for this episode. I mean seriously. It's supposed to be a heavily emotional episode but my god It felt like the writers have no experience In writing compelling dialogue. They want me to feel for the antagonist and be interested in his dynamic with his brother, fine but don't spend 2 minutes exploring it, and never telling us anything beyond that, despite this being vandors deatg
The voice acting also is considerably poor for some characters. There could be a character screaming because they're worried about their friend, but it's so forced that it doesn't feel natural.
There also weird scenes where the music gets tense and then it immediately cuts to what the other characters are doing, and it ruins the tone drastically.
Then there's the random freeze shots during a fight which feels so out of place and overused.
This episode has TONS of potential and that ending would have been great, if it wasn't so rushed. I mean seriously, oh because your sister walks a block away to sit down and calm down after what she just witnessed, that means she despises you and hates you? What? Oh and let's just hug and trust the random man who appeared out of nowhere, what? I mean seriously I'm pretty sure Vi and vandor have told powder to not trust strangers or that she's old enough and smart enough to genuinely know when something's wrong.
I genuinely loved the first two episodes too. Interesting new concepts, different but great animation but this episode feels like a big step back about everything I enjoyed about this show.
Ignoring the issues this episode has I think the finale set up an interesting story for the rest of the series but I think this episode could ruin it for me.
Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Chapters: Special 1 (2023)
Just wasn't that good in all honesty
This episode could have been done much better.
I mean the first 10 minutes and last 10 minutes we really well done but man was there no drama. Everything feel stretched and dragged out, I was BEGGING for them to just get on with it. I understand they're trying to wrap up character arcs, but for an hour episode you don't want to sit down and constantly listen to characters talk. I mean this episode didn't have much action so why did it take this long to release.
Hanges death felt stupid, and cringe, it's like she just died for the sake of it, I literally felt no emotion and completely forget about it. I can understand trying to stop the rumbling because it's wrong and it's genocide, but seriously risking your life just to protect you're enemies? Also a thought, would Eren seriously crush his friends, in that situation if nobody stepped up to slow down the rumbling? He wants his friends to have 'freedom' but his friends will live likely miserably lives knowing, They have millions of peoples blood on their hand.
This episode is a mess man, the saving grace was the first 10 minutes and the fight scene at the end, and flochs death which was done EXTREMELY well. He stayed loyal to the end, and his last words cemented him as one of the best aot characters, but that's all I can say about this mess of an episode.
I heard the ending was poor, which got me even less hyped considering this episode, and supposedly poor ending.
Monkie Kid: Bad Weather (2020)
Good introduction
I can already tell by this first episode that I'm going to adore this show.
Extremely likeable and funny characters, combined with a great concept and insanely well done fight scenes? What's there not to like.
The show is targeted for kids, but it's enjoyable for all ages in all honesty, and I heard the show only gets more serious and better, and I'm all for it!
I do maybe wish the episodes were 20 minutes long instead of 10 minutes. 20 minute episodes can flesh out everything in a nice manner, however I can see 10 minute episodes working for this show because of how time consuming it can be to animated those damn good fight scenes. Overall I'm looking for to this and I'm gonna binge it.
Shingeki no Kyojin: Memories of the Future (2022)
OH MY GOD
WHAT THE HELL, WOW WOW WOW
I CANT EVEN FATHOM OF HOW GOOD THIS EPISODE IS.
God I'm in shock, this has to be the craziest plot twist I've ever watched, The English VA's are extremely good for Eren, Zeke and grisha, DAMN MAN, This is by far the best episode of attack on titan. The emotion, the plot twist, the acting, everything is so WELL done. Those 5 last minutes might just be the best 5 minutes of any show I've ever watched.
This show just keeps elevating itself somehow, isayama is seriously a genius, how one writer can write a story so good, so compelling, so complex, like this is beyond me. This is literally peak tv, there's only a handful of shows that can rival attack on titan, which is just insane for one writer.
Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu: True Potential (2018)
Another peak episode
Following Garmadons revival Lloyd travels to kryptarium in order to reason with him, but his father is beyond that.
It creates for one of the saddest scenes in Ninjago. Garmadon while evil never wanted to hurt his son and cared for him, but this evil version is different.
But Garmadons revival only brought the evil version of himself and in order to reach his true potential he has to get rid of the only thing stopping him, his son.
It's a dramatic fight in which Lloyd does not want to fight but garmadon gives him the beating of a life time. One of the most saddest scenes in Ninjago and it means a lot for the story.
Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu: Big Trouble, Little Ninjago (2018)
2nd best episode of Ninjago.
One of the most tension filled, drama filled seasons and especially this episode. Following Garmadons revival, Lloyd is left without his powers , and the ninja must do everything in their power to stop Garmadon before the city is ultimately crushed by the colossus garmadon has created. The tone of this episode accompanied by the rain and the night creates for a darker and perfect tone for this episode.
This episode is just perfect, there's not another way to put it. The tension and the emotion in this episode especially with that cliffhanger of a ending will leave viewers wanting more, and boy does season 9 not disappoint.
Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu: The Way Back (2016)
Still my 2nd favorite season of Ninjago
Another solid episode. It had a great final battle and a great conclusion to the sky pirates in which they finally stand up to Nadakhan. It gaves jay some sold development, and while yes the timeline gets reversed and jay and Nya are the only ones who remember what happened, it creates for an awesome love story and solves all the problems between Jay and Nya between Seasons 3-5.
This season Cemented jay as my favorite character, because of how well he played protagonist this Season. From screwing up and getting most of the ninja trapped to standing up to Nadakhan and saving his friends.
Another thing I loved about this season are the sky pirates and Nadakhan. The sky pirates after finding out that Nadakhan's true intentions, turn on him and provide for a great conclusion, especially Clancee. He was one of the cowards on the team, but he finally stood up to his oppressive leader and while he did get captured within the sword, it felt satisfying to see him stand up against Nadakhan.
Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu: Tick Tock (2012)
One of my favorite episodes
Yes it doesn't add a whole lot to the plot, but it does reveal a shocking secret from Zane's life. It's revealed in this episode that he was a robot and that his father died a few years back. This helps complete his character and he says he feels better for knowing and it's great character development.
It also helped explain why garmadon is the way he is right now, with a sad backstory.
It's episodes like these which make the series more complete and this episode is more of a characterization episode hence why it doesn't advance the plot that much more. Regardless it's one of my all time favorites.
Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu: Game of Masks (2018)
Possibly one of the greatest episodes of television ever
Following the shocking revelation of who the quiet one is, this episode takes place mostly in the oni temple where Lloyd and harumi attempt to retrieve the mask of hatred.
Lloyd finds out harumi is the quiet one and it creates one of the most tense scenes in Ninjago ever.
Harumis backstory is shocking, it has everything, it ties back to older events, and something from Lloyd's past comes back to haunt him.
Harumi is probably the most well written Ninjago villian (Other than garmadon).
Just when Lloyd thinks he's found someone who finally loves him, he's surprised and shocked and saddened when harumi reveals her true intentions.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Decent story
They tried to explore some side stories with this, but ultimately became filler.
The story of bill and frank is ok, but It could have been better, and just felt really slow and generic.
To prove how pointless this episode is you could have watched the first 15 minutes and the last 10 minutes and you would have been fine.
To make a side story is fine but to introduce 2 characters gave them development, and kill them all in the span of 45 minutes, just felt like a stretch and goes to show again how pointless this episode is.
Yes it was nice to see some background stories on other characters, but when it barely contributes much to the story in this particular case then it's practically useless.
The Last of Us (2023)
So so good
I haven't played any of the games and have known nothing about this show coming in, but I heard it was great and boy was it great.
The first 3 minutes of the episode sets the tone of this show so well, and creates a sense of impending doom, and I liked how they implement scenes before the pandemic started. The next 30 minutes of the first episode were some of the most action packed scenes I've seen and it had me on edge and I almost shed a tear when Riley died. Yes I was already that Invested into a character.
The opening minutes of the second episode, sets place in Indonesia where the virus was first found, and it follows a old scientist who has studied cordyceps her whole life examining on of the first
Humans to be infected by the virus. After examine her she is horrified and immediately runs out the room. Her talk with the soldier is bone chilling, and some great foreshadowing.
The second episode was great into exploring more about the cordyceps virus and how it affects humans, and was also great to explore each of the characters more. The show knows how to balance action with character growth and development, aswell as emotion, and the cinematography is so so good. The portrayal of the zombies is done so well.
Seriously, this show is making me consider buying the game because that's how good it is.
