Unsung Hero (2024)

So inspiring and moving
27 April 2024
I really loved this movie. Christian films aren't always great; some are in fact quite cheesy. This movie was believable and a great story of perseverance, family and faith. I grew up loving the music of Rebecca St James but never knew her story. I didn't know she was related to the awesome brothers of For King and Country. This story was so incredibly powerful. As a father of four, I kept thinking what I would do if I lost my job and had no way to provide for my family. What a scary place to be. This story of hope and faith, and how the kids never stopping believing really moved me. It's not Hollywood it's real life.

My only wish is that the film didn't end so abruptly. I wanted to see more, like maybe a jump to "present day" where it showed the success of all the kids after incredible hardship. Either way this was a terrific, inspiring movie that the whole family should see.

Antoine Fuqua and Denzel are a powerhouse
12 March 2024
This movie is brilliant! The only reason I don't give it a 10 is because that is reserved for The Godfather and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. However in the action genre, this is absolutely one of the best! The cinematography is fantastic; the lighting, camera angles and film noir scenes give it a gritty realistic look. The casting for the villains are terrific. They are guys you really hate, unredeemable men, yet Denzel's character still gives them the chance to do the right thing. Denzel is a brilliant actor. His look says it all, without any dialogue. I loved this movie and was on the edge of my seat until the very end. Should have one an Academy Award for best picture!

Unbelievable Story
8 July 2023
I knew this was an important story to see, however I didn't have very high expectations going into it. Faith-based studios at times hire cheesy actors, and although sometimes inspiring, are often not very good films. This is definitely not the case here. Angel Studios did an excellent job. The true story of Tim Ballard is powerful and needs to be told. Director Alejandro Gómez Monteverde has a great vision and is an excellent storyteller. I was on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. The actors were all believable, and in some cases terrifying. When I see a movie I want to be drawn in, and this movie did just that. I wanted the villains to be brought to justice and I wanted to see the children rescued, but that being said, this movie was not predictable. I was clutching my hands hoping for a positive ending. The subject of child trafficking is horrific, but Jim Caviezel and the other actors did a great job bringing it to light without disturbing or graphic content. I had to be silent when the movie ended. It moved me to my core and was incredibly powerful. Everyone needs to see this and have our eyes open to what is happening in the world, and most of all pray for the children that are being abducted and are modern day slaves.

Moving and powerful
2 July 2023
Amy Grant said it best about Christian artists, "God is good, and you're just one of his messy followers telling everyone how good he is." Her words are profound and sums up the message of The Jesus Music. This documentary is excellent and a must see! It takes us back to the beginning of Christian Rock with bands like Stryper, Petra, and how their music was shunned by the church and called Devil music; The Jesus Movement introducing drums and electric guitar into worship..., and the growth of artists like Amy Grant and Sandi Patty, Toby Mac with their real-life struggles, and how the music industry turned their backs on them. I was deeply moved when Michael W Smith was inspired to bring worship back to Christian contemporary music and brought us the incredible Worship album. This documentary was great on many levels and brought me to tears several times. The interviews were inspiring and honest, and I was reminded how powerful music is to God and the kingdom of heaven. Watch this and your heart will be stirred.

Extremely Silly
25 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, let's get one thing straight. The Sixth Sense was brilliant! One of my favorite movies. Signs, Split, all good movies... but then there was The Happening, and a string of bombs, with. Knock at the Cabin taking the cake. It feels like Shyamalan believes he is creating something of great importance, but the entire time the audience is laughing at the absolute silliness of it all.

In this movie God sends four suicidal prophets with a message of an approaching Apocalypse that can only be stopped if one of the gay men in the cabin kills the other. Seriously? God's plan is to force someone commit murder in order to save the world? Also, every time they refuse, one of the suicide prophets has to be brutally slaughtered while a terrible plague is unleashed on the earth killing thousands. I know what I just wrote makes absolutely no sense. Welcome to Shyamalans movie. Ridiculous premise, and extremely silly to watch. There is a message at the end of this movie and it's this; "be nice to gay people because they could be asked to save the world".

Feel-Good Movie
22 March 2023
First I'll say, the acting in this movie is absolutely great!

Woody Harrelson and Kaitlin Olson are terrific and believable as adults who are floundering, still trying to figure out their way in life. Great chemistry between them, and you wanted them to be happy. The kids... they were fantastic! Funny, witty, sincere, and really good actors. There were so many lines that made me laugh out loud, and the best part is that the kids recognized their disabilities but weren't ashamed to be who they were. Farrelly really did a great job making the audience emotionally invested in the characters. There was a sweetness, that made me teary-eyed several times but at the same time I was laughing at all the zingers and one-liners. Bring your kids to this movie. It will teach them about acceptance and unconditional love. This movie is the best one so far I'm 2023.

Dirty Harry (1971)
8/10
Classic 70's movie
10 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Dirty Harry is one of my favorites! It's gritty, shot on the streets of San Fransisco. Clint Eastwood is great as the "I follow my own rules" cop. Tough and brutal. However here's my only beef... they catch the criminal not once, not twice, but three times! The first time a helicopter spots him on a roof and he gets away. The second time Dirty Harry spots him again on a roof and he gets away. Now what are the odds? There are thousands of rooftops in San Fransisco and the police spot him twice in 24 hours! The third time the killer is wounded and taken to the hospital. He is let go "after" they find the girl he buried "dead". Why is he let go? Not enough evidence.

Now don't get me wrong, this is a very enjoyable movie and Clint Eastwood is fun to watch, but the script is just dumb. So sit back, enjoy watching a classic 70's movie, and forget for a couple of hours that it doesn't make any sense.

Shrinking (2023– )

Great new show
26 February 2023
The writing for Shrinking is brilliant! My wife and I are both enjoying this immensely. Laughing out load and loving the characters. Jason Segel is quite a funny actor. Witting and charming. You can't help but root for these characters. There's a lot of shows crowding the airwaves, but this one is worth a watch.

Jimmy is struggling to grieve the loss of his wife while being a dad, friend, and therapist. He decides to try a new approach with everyone in his path: unfiltered, brutal honesty. This is the plot and it's executed brilliantly. If you're looking for something fresh and funny with great characters, then this show is for you.

Poker Face (2023– )

Wow! One of the best series to come out in a long time
2 February 2023
Rain Johnson is a genius writer. Knives Out was one of my favorites, and now last night I decided to give Poker Face a try. Right out of the gate they had those great yellow block credits with All Rights Reserved as a throwback to the 70's. I was hooked before it even started. The crime/mystery kept me guessing the entire time and the cast, Adrian Brody, Benjamin Bratt, and of course, Natasha Lyonne were absolutely terrific and fun to watch. This show had all the twists of Rain's brilliant Knives Out and honestly is one of the best new shows I've seen in a long time... and this is all from just watching one episode! I can't wait to finish watching the rest of them. Enjoy! You won't be disappointed.

CODA (2021)
10/10
Best movie in years!
3 January 2023
I wasn't sure if I would like this. I thought it would be slow... but in the first 10 minutes I was hooked. The acting is so unbelievably good!! Right away I loved the characters, and the filmmaking was brilliant. I don't want to give anything away, but the struggles of a girl trying to find her own way while dealing with her Mom, Dad and brother who are all deaf is heartbreaking to watch. Emilia Jones Is one of the most amazing actresses I have seen in a long time. I could feel her struggle, and it was real. Her moments with her family were tender and touching, and frustrating all at the same time. You wanted Emilia's character to succeed, but she had so many challenges, it seemed impossible. And the struggle with her deaf mom and dad and brother, trying to fit in with society and be treated as normal was so well portrayed. I cried at least 3 times in this movie, not because it's a tragedy, but because the movie is so realistic and moving. The music teacher Bernardo was terrific, and Ruby's dad was so interesting to watch. This movie definitely deserves the Oscar for Best Picture, and Emilia Jones is one of the best actresses to come out of Hollywood.
