Blue Star (2024)
Sports can unite anyone!
I saw this film today and initially I felt that maybe this film was another caste discrimination film but was pleasantly surprised about the way the caste differences were depicted. The humor elements are judiciously spread throughout the length of the film ensuring that the audience is hooked to storyline. The character who portrays Ashok Selvan's brother in the movie, has done a very commendable job and his performance was very memorable. Shantanu plays second fiddle to Ashok Selvan but has shown enough promise for people to expect him to play a solo hero role sometime in the future.
This will surely be a landmark film for Ashok Selvan as it is his first with his wife starring opposite him as the heroine.
Leo (2023)
Feast for Vijay fans!!
The entire movie was a visual feast and bore the stamp of a Lokesh Kanagaraj film. Lokesh's obsession with creating a connection between characters in his "LCU" is a bit hard to digest. But as a standalone film, Leo is a well made film and Vijay has delivered a nuanced performance. There are no unwanted punch dialogues and the film moves at a steady pace. I personally felt that the director could have avoided the "human sacrifice" element in his story. Also, the fight sequences in the factory godown towards the end seemed unnecessarily long and unrealistic (maybe the director shot the film with possible video game franchise in mind is sonething only Time will reveal)
Farhana (2023)
Farhana: An Average Thriller
I saw this film on Sony Liv with a lot of expectations especially since it was starring Aishwarya Rajesh (who is known to choose solid scripts consistently) but felt a tad disappointed.
The screenplay is engaging and keeps the viewer hooked till the end but the climax leaves a lot of questions unanswered. There was very little scope for Selvaraghavan's role and the script could have been adjusted to potray a more powerful villain. The film also seemed to cause a lot of confusion to the viewer and one felt compelled to ask the relevance of a parallel murder incident. A decent movie but nothing to rave about.
Iratta (2023)
Layered Story with an Unbelievable Climax
Saw this film on Netflix and instantly liked it and recommended it to all my friends. This is one of the many good Malayam crime thriller movies that I've seen in recent times.
Solid storyline with the necessary dose of plot twists to keep you hooked throughout. I can however bet that 99 times out of 100, you will never guess the climax sequence. When the climax happens, you are left in shock and awe as you will find it difficult to stop yourself from taking sides and pondering about what could have been.
Joju George in a dual role has made a big impact with this movie as potrays different shades of emotion like grief, guilt, exasperation and relief with great aplomb.
Pariyerum Perumal (2018)
Hard Hitting and Thought Provoking!
This has to be one of the best Tamil films of all time. The fact that the movie was engrossing throughout without any superstars involved, is a testament to the robust storyline and engaging screenplay.
This must be a milestone film for actor Kathir as he brings out different emotions with his nuanced acting. I saw this film in a theatre and there were plenty of moments where you could sense that the audience felt a deep connection with angst portrayed. Each and every character played his/her part to perfection and you will definitely feel satisfied when you have watched this masterpiece. If you are an Indian and have watched this film, it will definitely make you think about the ills of the caste system.
Physics Wallah (2022)
Physic Wallah: A raw and soul touching experience
I had never felt compelled to even cast a second glance at Amazon mini TV but after watching "Physics Wallah", I feel that there could be more hidden gems released in Amazon mini TV. Coming back to "PhysicsWallah" , the story line is based on a real life Physics teacher and Sreedhar Dubey has done a stellar job of ensuring that audiences connect with the character of Alakh Pandey. In an age, where there is a lot of grey areas, Alakh Pandey's characters showed a raw honesty and resilience that is generally evident amongst great teachers. Anyone who has been inspired by a great teacher would get nostalgic when they experience "Physics Wallah". Highly recommended for the feelings of positivity and never say die attitude ,it evokes within viewers.
Dahaad (2023)
Dahad: Keeps you hooked throughout
Most crime investigation drama series are structured in such a way that the final episodes typically contain the "big reveal" where the killer is unmasked but Dahad takes a journey away from the beaten track by trying a fresh if not totally new approach.
Vijay Varma as Anand Swarnakar, who potrays the "cool as cucumber" and "cunning as a fox" serial killer has performed a memorable role that is sure to keep him etched in the minds of anyone and everyone who watched "Dahad". All the characters together have delivered great performances and keeps you riveted to the screen even though each episode is approx 60 minutes long. Definitely recommended for people who like "slow burn" crime dramas.
Run Baby Run (2023)
See the film title before deciding to watch!!
Saw the film to kill some time and came back disappointed. This movie has a lot of loopholes and the narration has many weak areas. From the very start, there are many unexplainable circumstances which don't make sense. Here are some:
1. The hero goes jewellery shopping and forgets to centrally lock his car (highly unlikely behavior for a person with a high end car) which allows a character to get into this car and hide. And who chooses someone's car as a hiding place?
2. A person's first reaction on seeing a stranger in the car is to stop and confront the intruder but Balaji somehow masks the fact from his fiancé (if you are about to get married screaming and exposing the intruder is what any sane guy would do)
3. The fact that the hero allows the stranger to use his guest room in his house unsupervised defies commonsense.
4. The fact that Balaji goes to sleep when there is a stranger in his house is unfathomable.
5. The hero's marriage is called off when pictures of him sleeping with missing character (fabricated) is shared with his relatives. Any person with half a brain would wonder ....who takes photos of himself with a woman using another person?
6. Aishwarya Rajesh not checking the view binder in a stranger's house and anyway allowing the person she suspects the most ( while waiting for her guardian) is also something hard to understand.
I think the director thought confusing the people thoroughly and just making people guess is what goes into making a thriller. The only saving grace of the film was Balaji's measured acting. You can definitely give this movie a miss.
Kantara (2022)
Original and Mesmering
If you watch the film without any preconceived notions, you will enjoy the originality and the simplicity of the story.
However, I don't think that it deserves the extremely high rating that has been given as I feel that the story does not linger in your mind as there is nothing mind blowing or goosebumps inducing ( maybe because I saw it on Amazon Prime and not in a movie theater).
Most people just go into "crazy fan" mode by following the herd mentality. At a time when the Government is working hard to remove myths and illogical beliefs that impede the nation's progress, the impact that this kind of a movie will have on people from non urban areas, is difficult to dismiss.
Hope people don't start romanticizing the storyline and start propagating these kind of stories as true. A certain amount of mythology is necessary to identify with our roots but the depiction of practices and rituals should not influence people to promote the movie as an accurate reflection of Indian values and traditions that need to be upheld.
