At Eternity's Gate (2018)
a brave attempt to show the inner soul of Van Gogh, avoids overly dramatic scenes,
A brave attempt to depict the inner soul and outward manifestations of misunderstood genius, avoids excess to the extreme. Nature is shown as it is rather than being retooled for Disney-like magic. Some good dialogue between Vincent, Gaugin, a waitress and a psychiatrist. The depiction of actual painting is well done. I'm a composer and the music score ruined the viewing due to its infantile piano chord phrases that intruded, annoyed and dug a deep hole for a good film by virtue of its infantile musical masturbation. The composer's chosen style intruded more than it complemented and it was "in your face" throughout. I recommend the film for "what works" and how well the star and Director ease up on the "theatrical gas pedal" to achieve a "close to the soul" depiction of a tortured soul who created magnificent paintings.
Deutsches Haus (2023)
Good film, intense, well acted, courageous
This is a good series with very fine cast. The focus on the main character's increasing awareness is perfect. The episodes falter when unnecessary digressions dealing with the young Jewish lawyer, his angst, prostitution, outbursts. The courtroom scenes are great and even minor roles are realized quite brilliantly. I recommend this series highly, but one must be patient enough to get thru the unnecessary digressions in order to get the magic. These people tackled a difficult subject. The music score stimulates a feeling of reality hidden inside the insanity. There are surprises that enliven the drama just when you think you've seen it all. Characters, for once, have contrasting sides to their being so one never knows what will be revealed and 'that' is one of the strengthens of this drama.
