Rewind (2023)
Most important things in life
The movie's plot is its powerful asset. It teaches you about the most important things in life- love and sacrifice, forgetting oneself for the people you love, making the most of your time, a trusting relationship with God. Perhaps the message has been delivered so direct to the viewer's plate, but the effect is good all in all. The actors did a good job, especially Dingdong. If you want a feel good movie that makes you reflect about your own life at the same time, then Rewind is for you to see (perfect for the MMFF season!). It has a universal appeal even if the culture and values portrayed are strongly Filipino. For Filipinos, it affirms the good feeling of being born into this culture.
Peace by Chocolate (2021)
Good for your heart!
Simply heart-warming and heart-lifting! Gives you the better side of man who knows how to care for others (in this case our refugee brothers). Touches your heart to do what's good because the good is always contagious, no matter what. It's not very heavy drama since it does not put much focus on external conflict brought about by society to refugees. It does a good job in showing internal conflict within a traditional Syrian family who's facing a terribly difficult moment in their life. The human values resonate with many close-knit families. The internal struggles of Tareq are very real in many lives. Ayham did good acting and so did the entire cast- very realistic, natural. Great camera angles, too.
Family Matters (2022)
Not to be taken for granted
I hope the movie industry can produce more Filipino movies like this to affirm how beautiful our family culture is. Kudos to the script writer Mel del Rosario, director Nuel Naval and to the realistic and powerful cast! Many would say that this is just another ordinary Filipino movie...But challenge yourself and put it in mainstream Hollywood and you won't find anything like this. This is something that really makes me proud as a Filipino! How many of us truly appreciate the concern siblings put into orchestrating parents' activities among themselves, making sure that mom and dad receive the best care? How many of us appreciate giving up our gadgets in order to focus on our loved ones? Thanks so much Family Matters for reminding us of things we could be taking for granted...
Sakal, sakali, saklolo (2007)
Almost not acting
Very true-to-life young couple setting with their own set of challenges. Good acting by lead actors (almost not acting as they are themselves), although with exaggeration from the veterans to highlight the comedic slant. The movie highlights good Filipino values such as love for the family and the generosity to sacrifice oneself for loved ones, among others. Gives an idea of commendable parenting practices and the importance of giving priority to spouse over children. Very smooth transition of scenes/ story line from one thing to another. The effort to shoot in Barcelona was ok but the 'critic' intended for Filipinos abroad was kinda looked like an add-on with a hint of realism. The Spanish girl friend also didn't look suitable for the role. Over-all, highly recommended if you want a good laugh and a heart warmer😊💕
