Life (2017)
Rebecca T is amazing ....and that is about it
I spent more time asking "why" than enjoying this ridiculous movie. I did have a surreal experience watching Rebecca Thompson's performance: Stellar acting but also the dumbest character choices in the history of cinema. She is a lead of the mission and the self appointment "firewall" to prevent the alien sample from getting to Earth if the project goes astray. Yet everything she does is the opposite of a firewall. It became a joke for me to see how she could mess up the next alien sequence.
Jake and Ryan seem to have been given a million bucks and a weak script and thought why not?
The CGI was stellar and I could have given it a few points but the writer and director annoyed me too much with the idiocy of the story.
The Creator (2023)
Three points for the stunning visuals. Zero for the rest of this piece of failed movie making
I had high hopes like the rest of those that have commented here. Visually stunning but man what a terrible script with some atrocious dialogue. How can AI be that advanced and have the crappiest weapons? None of it was feasible. A giant all seeing ship in the sky that could not see the giant cities full of AI that it swore to destroy. A world where AI was banned yet these people thrived in Asia? So many questions with no answers. The lead actor was average and seemed insane to take the lead role, the young girl was not given enough to work with. I so wanted to be swept away with rich developed characters rather than the shallow edifices they presented. I have to mention the ridiculous amount of violence. Sure they wanted to portray humans as evil but it could have been done so much better with a better script. The ending... gawd...what a waste and so empty. I think I've complained enough here😊
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
The MCU needs to go back to the drawing board
Visually this movie is stunning in the magical world that it created but the story is a snooze fest. Sure they fight the bad guy and you can guess who wins, because they always win. The creators should take a look at Everything Everywhere all at once if they want to see how a multiverse plot can be done with a story that is deeply moving and hits all of the notes of a great story. Maybe they targeted this at five year olds ? Who knows, but not once did I really care what happened cause I basically knew what would happen. And I've never read a comic:) The acting was good with what they were given but man I would have loved to feel something rather than boredom.
The Rig (2023)
I really wanted it to get better
After episode 2 I was at a 7 but after watching everything it's barely a 5.
Such poor acting choices from some very fine actors. I've never seen a British cast over act so much. You'd think folks that lived and breathed oil rigs would be pretty grounded but not here. They're all angry, keep hiding information from each other that could help each other. When they have a guy that threatens their being there they just leave him unguarded to continue his damage.
The premise is great but it's super pushy on the environmental agenda, which is fine but I'd be surprised if crews of oil rigs would spout so much anti big oil sentiment as this lot. Trying to push the narrative rather than letting it come out naturally is the biggest sign of a script's weakness. I can't imagine there's going to be season two after this.
The Recruit (2022)
When farce meets drama. So much better than expected
A spy drama about the CIA that is more farce than drama but it really works. No way 90% of this Would ever happen in real life but it's put together in such a way that I didn't care. Great acting, smart writing, great but unbelievable story lines that still work.
Love the side plot with his roomies that you'd never get in a normal spy drama and it really added to the story. The main charterers slow slide into anxious exhaustion was so well executed.
The final scene was so unexpected and sad but a brilliant opening for the next season, which I have no doubt will happen. So thanks for an enjoyable ride.
La Brea (2021)
A stroke of genius!!!
Just like the writers and producers tricked you into watching this, I had to do the same. But I think they've tricked us beyond mere mortal trickery. They've made a show so demonstrably bad that it forces you to keep watching, desperately hoping for it to become even 1% better. Think soap opera mixed with chalk and that chalk you scraped across a blackboard so black that it sears a hole in your soul with its awfulness but you still hold out a shred of hope that you'll be rescued from its infinite torment. Was COVID not enough? Why bring this monstrous green screened evil into the world? What is it trying to teach us in this great time of upheaval?
Sweet Tooth (2021)
I tried..
Great premise that was poorly executed. Loved some of the characters apart from the main kid who was insufferable. Some horrible acting and really awful writing to boot. I ended up fast forwarding most of it to see if it redeemed itself but sadly it wasn't enough. Can't wait to not see season 2.
Seungriho (2021)
A great start ...
No one can dismiss the CGI as being awesome and the set design is very good. Beyond that though the story struggles through a lack of clear direction. Acting is OK with too many folks seemingly dragged off the streets and offered speaking roles. Script needs to tighten up a lot and you could cut 20 mins off and still have a decent movie. It was certainly watchable and I enjoyed it for the most part but I won't be posting it to FB as a must watch.
Outside the Wire (2021)
Just bad, and not in a good way
Great premise but....Weak script. Average acting combined with overt acting. Story going nowhere fast. Sad Netflix, very sad.
The Boys (2019)
Season 2 as good as the first so far
One of best superhero franchises ever imo. The humor is biting and so in line with the current crisis of our collective right now. The new character additions are taking the show into a darkness that was always there but not as threatening. I revel in the ugliness of the supes but also in their brokenness. Some of the lines are so obviously from the mind of Seth Rogan that it brings a smile to my face. I love that I hate Homelander as much in this second season but pity him even more now. Ultimately I feel gratitude for them building a team of writers and actors and crew that have produced one of my favorite shows ever.
The Last Days of American Crime (2020)
Great title... Worst movie than the pandemic
Garbage, atrocious, why?
And that's the good bits
Is a better film on triple speed
It doesn't make sense
It's not even trying
Why did you do this to me God?
Booksmart (2019)
It was awesome
I'm a dude well over 40 and I think was one of the funniest things I've watched in a long time. Witty writing and some unforgettable characters made this teen gal coming of age ish movie thoroughly enjoyable.
Sure a few holes here and there but I was entertained for the whole 90 mins.
Manifest (2018)
7 eps in and I think I'm done
Really liked the beginnings and I had a lot of promise...until. Until I realized the producers must have been recruited from The Bold and the Beautiful or Greys Anatomy. It's basically a soap opera body with sci fi legs on it. I get the odd feeling they are gonna get dropped after season 1
