The first episode is captivating, enthralling and heart-wrenching; if the rest of the series is like this, it is true brilliance. To be clear, sexism, racism, discrimination are well and alive today in 2023-2024... to utilise the 1950's to convey this as well as science is not just a stroke of genius, it's a true conduit. Lewis Pullman and Brie Larson make the audience fall in love with their highly odd, yet endearing and completely scientific way of falling in love with chemistry, and each other. If you are "sitting on the fence" because this is labelled as drama, rest assured, this is every bit as delicious as Game of Thrones. Highly recommended 10/10.

Relic (2020)
8/10
A perfect example of Elevated Horror done right!
2 August 2023
Relic is indeed fitting of the new horror sub-genre "elevated horror" (movies that don't rely on misused jump-scares or excessive gore, but are emotionally and psychologically disturbing and contain allegory). The terror of forgetting is the theme of this film, however, nothing in this film was slapped together by genre algorithm. The passing of time is a key theme of the movie (a bath overflowing with water; a fruit in a bowl has grown mouldy; the tennis court overrun with grass). This tone is well established before the sense of foreboding and dread is introduced. After all, the passing of time, is part of life. Three generations are represented here; mother (Emily Mortimer as "Kay"), daughter (Bella Heathcote as "Sam") and grandmother (Robyn Nevin as "Edna"). These three give meaty, fulfilling, sticky performances, that perfectly complement the ambience of decay. This movie is nightmarish, evenly paced, and never, ever rushed. "Edna" is both the film's focal point and source of emotion and empathy. She is its "freak of nature"; its monster. Truly, a person, growing deformed, feeding into the idea that time's unstoppable march forward claims us all in the long run. Or is she? Only watching will satisfy that question. A provocative and visually captivating watch. HIGHLY recommended.

Since when is nudity a skill?
15 June 2023
Astonishing Tales of Terror: Rocktapussy! Is truly contender for the most planted reviews, which credit the film with a higher than deserved rating because of the lead's partial nudity! It's truly astonishing that anyone would consider nudity a skill, or that any sort of film as poorly acted and directed would be given anything higher than a 2/10. Aside from the fact that the storyline I flimsy to the point of annoyance, there's the lack of direction, horrible creature effects, and sickeningly wooden dialogue. It's quite obvious that the bulk of this movie is the non-skill of being a fit woman. I'm sorry, Ms Kingsley, you couldn't act your way out of your own clothes. Avoid this stunningly horrible time waster.

Drops of God (2023)

Perfection!
9 May 2023
"Drops of God" is one of those rare series that rapturously scratches the itch of the most discerning viewer. It succeeds in enthralling, whilst simultaneously ensuring deep, addictive satisfaction (for its viewers). From the very first episode, "Foundation", the viewer is transported into cinematic excellence where the scenes are sharply focused, the dialogue pivots on a knife's edge, and the story is intense and fragrant. All of the characters are well fleshed-out, but great respect and appreciation must be bestowed upon the two main protagonists; Fleur Geffrier as "Camille Leger" and Tomohisa Yamashita as "Issei Tomine". Both of these actors do something that is incredibly rare in a series: they command "the everything, and the everyone", and create an atmosphere of relatability in this ultra niché nouvelle-aquitaine and Provençal Tokyo world. With 4 episodes down, and 4 remaining, it is evident that it is series like this that are the exceptionally priceless embodiment of perfect pacing, concise direction, A-level acting, and thoroughly brilliant story-telling. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Note: since this series is mainly in French and Japanese make sure to only watch with the HC subbed English links...unless of course you are fluent in French and Japanese!
