Cute, but not amazing
20 June 2005
I had a chance to see this movie at an advanced screening.

I'm sorry to say that there were people who walked out. Admittedly, the first half is kind of dull. The cute and funny parts are few and far between.

The plot is dragged down horribly by some really bad secondary characters. Uncle Arthur, Iris/Endora and Isabelle's father are all reaaaally dull and contrived. The movie comes to a grinding halt when they appear.

The script writing is quite clever, and Nicole Kidman (happy birthday today!) is great, as always. Will Ferrell just plain cracks me up. I would have liked to see the plot give him more goofy parts, because that's when he really shines.

All in all, not really a surprising movie. Wait and rent it!

As Funny As Always!
13 February 2005
George Carlin is awesome! After watching and re-watching all of his older bits, it was wonderful to see one of his newer shows. The old tapes tend to go over and over the same jokes... It really is refreshing to see this stuff.

As he gets older, he becomes even more bitter, which just makes him funnier! The guy is a bloody genius. His jokes are very clever. One of my favourite comedians by far.

Admittedly, the part about scabs seems to go on a little long, but it's made up for with the gems about People who Need to Die and the 10 Commandments.

If you like to laugh, and you're not easily offended, I would suggest this show!

Culkin steals the show...
29 October 2002
I enjoyed this movie.

I hadn't seen a movie with Kieran Culkin in it since Cider House Rules, and I'm happy to say that he's become a very good actor. The script was well written, fast-paced with intricate dialogue, and he managed to carry the weight of main character very well.

I like Ryan Phillippe. Cruel Intentions is a wonderful movie, as is Little Boy Blue, Nowhere and (parts of) White Squall. Unfortunately, it seems that since Cruel Intentions, he's become stuck in a bit of an acting "rut". He seems typecast now and can't get out of the sleazy, spoiled rich kid role. The other movies that I have seen him in allowed him to express himself as an actor and not just play the same character in a different family or slightly different situation.

Claire Danes was wonderful, as usual.

I give the entire shabang a 9. It was good, but didn't really have that extra push to it.

Will it ever end?!?
10 October 2002
This movie dragged on... and on.... and on...

Just when you thought it was over, more plot was attempted to be created.

I didn't hate it that much, though. I just think it was incredibly long and drawn out unnecessarily.

I will say, however, that Wes Bentley has managed to redeem himself as an actor. 'American Beauty' was wonderful, but after seeing him flop in 'Soul Survivors' I thought that his acting was only outstanding in the first movie because of the script. 'Four Feathers' did not have an above average script, but Wes Bentley still managed to make the strongest impression on me. He's managed to escape the typecasting placed on him by 'American Beauty' and redefine his acting ability.

To be honest, I'm sick of seeing American actors play British people. Very rarely are they good at the accents, and it distracts from the film. I don't care if I'm watching famous people or not, I'd just like a little more authenticity.
