Wish (2023)
Loved this one despite the reviews
I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and was so surprised that the reviews for it were so poor. Even my own sister did not enjoy it. I thought it was a refreshing take -the message was simple yet there were so many underlying themes covered. Friendship, standing up for what is right even when it's not popular, not being afraid to speak up, being strong when you are tested and so many more. No love interests and no crude jokes. You didn't need to know much about Asha to understand that her pursuit was worthy of support. I loved that this Disney movie did not promote any of the modern propaganda that has been surfacing in so many of their films. This film was about friendship and standing up for what is good and what is right. It was about questioning authority in a respectful way, asking questions, seeking answers and not being afraid of change. It was about how a person in power can loose sight of what is best for the masses and how hard pleasing everyone is. The music was powerful and so well written. One of my new favorites I will watch over and over.
Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss (2023)
Inspired until teen revealed they all take antidepressants
We were all inspired starting the first episode learning about happy Icelandic people up until Rainn's interview with teens of Iceland that helped reveal Iceland is the happiest place on earth because they take the most antidepressants of any other country?! Ok, well kind of a waste of time to keep watching it. We turned to each other and all said "you wanna watch something else now?"
The cinematography was beautiful and the interactions were genuine but we were hoping to be inspired by different ways of living. When that was revealed win the first episode we were completely turned off. If more reviews reveal that the show gets better we might give it another shot.
Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)
Wendy carried the movie
Wendy's character was strong and relatable. I could feel what she was feeling just through her facial expressions. I felt as though Peter Pan and Hook's characters were weak, and the action scenes between them were subdued. I appreciated the mellowing of Peter's pompous attitude from the original cartoon but he now lacks likability and came off as boring. I felt like he could have exuded confidence without being bland. He didn't sell his character, or the premise of Neverland. His character didn't have enough depth in my opinion. The production was beautiful, though, and the friendships were inspiring.
