Blurring the Color Line (2022)
Please seek out this wonderful documentary
Please seek out this wonderful and important documentary. It's a documentary about Chinese living in Segregated south. The filmmaker uses her grandmother who is Chinese and lived in Georgia In 1927 as the through line to reflect on a subject matter not many are familiar with. I know too often a documentary with this subject matter will try to talk down to you, make you feel guilty for being ignorant of the history behind it, but not this film. The filmmaker takes on a more Micheal Moore than Ken Burns approach to this powerful story. She investigates her own family history as well as the society they lived in, interviewing historians and descendants of people who experienced the story first hand. But she is also able to keep this story with heavy weight lighthearted and easily palatable enough. Making the film an enjoyable and educational watch. It's a fine line that this film walked to perfection! If it was up to me I would show this film to all the middle schoolers during their history class about Jim Crow. I hope this gets a wide release very soon, looking forward to watching it again!
