Une mère parfaite (2021)
Good idea, poor execution
This story is a very interesting idea, unfortunately there are several issues. To begin with, none of the characters are likable. At the beginning you may have some sympathy for the mother but as the story progresses you start to lose it. The end is very very very disappointing and makes you wonder what was the purpose of this series. Usually you finish a show wishing the characters get the best outcome, but this time I wish they'd had it worse (except for the lawyer). The more I watched the less I liked them. I wouldn't mind hating the characters if at least they've got what they deserve, but they don't.
There are some plot twists, which is good, but you could predict them along the way. It should also have been shorter than 4 episodes, the last one was too slow and got boring some times.
El árbol de la sangre (2018)
A waste of potential
I rarely find a film boring, I like when films are slow, but this one was painful to watch. For over an hour I was wondering whether there was any story to be told at all, later on lots of things start to happen that just add an unnecessary layer of complexity. The core story was interesting, but they didn't have enough material for 2 hours.
What's more infuriating is the ending, you just get wondering what was the purpose of all that drama if things were going in that direction without any development in between. Actually, instead of wasting time with unnecessary complexity, why not explore how the things Rebeca and Marc discovered would have impacted their mental health? Would they have very paradoxical feelings? Would they fight with each other because of different views in the matter? Instead we get an end that seems to come out of nowhere. Or if they definitely didn't want to go in this direction, they should have made a much shorter film.
The acting was good and the photography fantastic. The way they chose to tell the story was also very creative. But that's not enough to save this film.
Triada (2023)
Predictable and not a real story
Can you really claim something is based on a real story when only 1% of it is real? The only real story here is triplets finding out they are triplets, but all the rest is fabricated. It's a cheaper version of Orphan Black (even the hair styles!) while mixing a bunch of other random stuff in an attempt to create something original. It wouldn't bother me so much if the story ended up being good, but it's not! They create a lot of unnecessary complexity, playing with the way events unfold, they think you'll be surprised with a big reveal and a plot twist, but it's actually predictable!
And why create two characters who work for the police but can't figure out much of anything on their own? Not to mention how dumb they can be sometimes.
The acting is good and that's the only reason why I'm giving 4 stars.
Otwórz oczy (2021)
What a surprise
To be honest I wasn't expecting much, I've been watching so many predictable mystery stories that I just gave up on expecting surprises. But this one is really good, it kept me guessing until the last moment. Nothing is totally clear, you keep trying to understand what's going on, even after having some resolution.
But I don't recommend it if you need explanations for every single detail, because a few questions aren't answered, they are a good reason for a second season but apparently there's nothing coming after 2 years of its release. If you are okay with getting 90% of questions answered, so go for it.
The Girl on the Train (2016)
Definitely worth watching it
Before watching it I saw a review saying you can't predict the end but I disagree. You can see who's is responsible for what happened very early on because it's a bit cliché. Not to mention the amount of stupid decisions and inappropriate, unrealistic behaviors.
But I still think this movie is very good, the acting is fantastic and the whole ride to uncover the details is worth it.
I just don't recommend it to people who can only enjoy fast passed movies. This one isn't that fast. If you like slow, dramatic, mysterious movies you are more likely to enjoy this one. Otherwise I'd watch something else.
