Being Human: Pilot (2008)
One of the best dramas to come from the BBC in a long time!
I wasn't even planning to watch this, I hadn't even heard of it. I had been watching Torchwood, which is rubbish by the way, and I saw an advert for Being Human while the credits rolled. I though this sounded interesting, so I decided to watch it.
By the time it had finished, I was completely won over. In just one episode, I felt more for for Mitchell and Co than I do for the entire Torchwood team put together. This is funny, smart, dramatic and very very good.
You may ask why I compare Being Human to Torchwood. The reason is this, Torchwood is meant to be one of the leading BBC shows but, for me, it's to up-it's-own-ass to be any good. Being Human has taught Torchwood a thing or two and I sincerely hope they make more.
Doctor Who: Voyage of the Damned (2007)
Voyage of the Damned 7 out of 10
From the run up to this Christmas special, including all the trailers released, it looked like the Doctor Who CGI effects team had outdone themselves. And they certainly had, the effects of the Titanic being hit by those asteroids and of the Titanic itself have outdone anything seen before in this new Doctor Who.
But, other than the effects, there really isn't anything else that sets this Christmas special apart from any other episode which results in a disappointing feeling by the end. The fact that this Christmas special does feel like any other episode means that it lost those 3 points in my vote. Kylie Minogue's appearance was neither here nor there and it didn't feel like a great loss when she sacrificed herself.
At the end of the day, Voyage of the Damned will serve it's purpose well in keeping the Doctor Who fanbase interested until the beginning of series 4 which, by the way, looks very interesting indeed.
Batman Begins (2005)
The Perfect movie
I've been a fan of Tim Burton's two Batman movies since forever. I truly believed that he had captured the batman character and the villains in the perfect way. Then Joel Schumacher came along and basically ruined everything I had loved about the first two movies. And so I gave up and assumed I would never see another decent Batman movie again.
Then Christopher Nolan came along and not only proved me completely wrong but made a batman movie that is an even better depiction of the caped crusaders than Tim Burton's classics.
But not all of the praise can go to Christopher Nolan. All the actors made their characters perfect; Christian bale is perfect as batman/Bruce Wayne because you really believe that this character will dress up as a bat and fight crime in order to avenge his parent's murder. Michael Caine puts in a great performance as Alfred and Cillian Murphy is a frightening, psychotic villain (even if he is a little under-used... but no matter cos I hear he's coming back in The Dark Knight!) Even the Batmobile (or Tumbler) has replaced the original movie one as my favourite. When I first saw photos of it I thought it was a joke. I genuinely believed it would be the worst bat mobile ever. But when I saw it in the cinema it looked AWESOME! The script/story was as good as they get these days. It wasn't too far-fetched so you could still watch this movie and relate to the characters but at the same time it had that fantasy/superhero feeling to it.
In my opinion; the best movie in recent years.
My only worry now is that The Dark Knight (sequel to Batman Begins) will not live up to our expectations. But I have faith in all the cast and crew.
