The Portable Door (2023)
Cute and fun
Stumbled across this on Amazon this morning and we like Sam Neill, so we were pretty sure we'd like this.
It was part meet-cute, part magical chase.
Nothing too scary, no blood, a baby dragon (I wanted to see the baby dragon more), goblins are the "good guys," a basement I'd happily get lost in, and a magical door that will take you anywhere you want to go.
The characters are sweet, and exude a smidge of danger. But. Magic. Familiar people in lots of roles, odd things, interesting places and a happy ending.
What more can you ask for? Do watch the credits too.
On our watchlist forever now, and I'm off to go find the books.
The Winchesters (2022)
Don't listen to the haters
Was this Supernatural? No. It's definitely different, but with enough touches of the "mothership" to be highly satisfying to this fan.
First, let's address the elephant in the room. No, Sam wasn't there. We don't know why yet. Is Dean "on a break from Heaven"? We don't know yet. But Dean is certainly thinking of him. Jared and Jensen are ok with each other and that's what counts.
Drake definitely feels like John. There are enough mannerisms from Jensen, Jared and Jeff to make him feel authentic in the role, and we knew he was already a fan, so that tracks too.
Meg is wonderful and to me feels like a younger Mary. There are some solid feels of Sam and Amy, I like her personality and she already seems haunted by the people she wasn't able to save, and has clearly decided she does not want to be a hunter forever.
Some caveats. John would have had hand-to-hand combat training as a Marine. Not just rifle training. Marines are not just dumb grunts. In order to become a Marine, you do have to have a brain (I know, my son is a Marine and had a high ASVAB score- so high the only thing he wasn't qualified for was black ops). A Loup-Garou is a kind of werewolf.
I like the rest of the new crew, Latika, Carlos and Ada (she should really be around more!), Carlos is interesting and I can't wait to hear more of his story, same for Latika and Ada. I really like that it's an ensemble cast and I really like them all. I loved the "Indiana Jones" feel to the first part with Samuel and when John and Mary found the box. The new "big bad" is going to be very interesting! Can't wait to see what other new monsters we get to meet!
I loved the little nods- the postcard in Ada's store that said "Manners", a nod to Kim Manners, one of SPN's best directors. Others spotted D. Nutter on a file, and I'm sure there are others, with more to come.
All in all, I'm so so damn pleased. So happy that I trusted Jensen to steer this ship. If this is the first step in the journey to getting both Sam and Dean back, then I'm strapped in for the trip!
Cosmos (2019)
Cosmos delivers...
A really solid and interesting movie. My husband and I had started it, stopped it and came back to it months later, actually sat down, paid attention and watched it.
I was impressed at how solidly the lack of action held my attention. The characters were interesting and I could relate to the things they said, the explanations didn't seem too technical and I could pick up the gist of what was going on and actually understand it.
*Spoiler below*
The most "action" part of the movie was a car ride, not a car chase, but race to get to where they could save their batteries before losing all their data. And I was screaming at the screen for them to make it.
All in all, for a movie made on a shoestring budget, it was excellent. The biggest problem when we watch a movie like this is that when it's over, we want more like it and there are very few.
But we can go back and watch it again. And we probably will.
Walker: Common Ground (2022)
Cordell, you're too darn nice!
Cordell, darn it, you're too dang nice and I adore you, but the Davidsons are really peeving me off!! The Davidsons are a bunch of jerks and I want to see them have to give the Walkers' land back ASAP!
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
The finale we deserved
How do you encapsulate 15 years of family, of love, of brothers who would literally do anything for each other into a few words? Into an hour? You don't do anything other than give them the peace to Carry On. That's just what we got and though I'm gonna cry for a long time to come, I would only change one small thing (ok maybe two or three, thanks, Covid).
One side of the fandom didn't get what they were angling for. They said that 70% of the fandom would like it (like is a strong word, I don't like it, I also love it, so -I don't know) and 30% would hate it.
I watched this show for 15 years and even though it took a little time to accept, I always knew it had to end this way.
Dean could not live without Sam, he was physically incapable of it. Sam, though, could live for Dean, to honor his last wish, his last words, and he did. It hurt him every day, I could see that. Jared gave it his all. In the lines of how Sam held himself and the look in his eyes, he never stopped missing his brother, and when he finally got to see him again, it was with the knowledge he had done as Dean asked and THEY were finally at peace.
Jensen gave us Dean's last words with all the love he'd ever held for Sam, he let Sam go, knowing he would see him again and that Sam would honor his wishes. Sam always has.
They're at peace. And that's all I ever wanted for them. Peace.

Driven (2019)
Watch this on Repeat!
It's no secret that I love Richard Speight Jr.'s acting. He's been in Band of Brothers, Supernatural, he was the Pepsi guy, and he's got all the chops.
I've been waiting to see this since I heard about it last year and I was NOT disappointed in the least. Snarky and funny, both Roger and Emerson had me laughing out loud at several points.
Roger is sweet in a very naive way when it comes to the real world and Emerson gives him a crash course in life. While fighting demons...for lack of a better word! It held my attention and did not make me feel like I'd lost an hour and a half of my life.
Funny, with a lot of heart and few scares, you want to watch this.
