Pam & Tommy (2022)
Baffled at the bad reviews...
This is a masterpiece on so many levels. It couldn't be told any other way, as the story is so dark; what happened to Pamela Anderson was absolutely awful. It couldn't have happened this way today, as she was victimized and then persecuted because of the times.
For those of us who lived through this and heard about the tape, or knew someone who had one, or just read the tabloids, this is an inside view of how it all went down. The campy way it's written and produced takes the viewer back to the 90's and the beginning of the internet in a fun way while telling this actually very dark, sad story.
Lily James does an amazing job portraying Pamela Anderson. Some have said she comes across as dumb, and I felt the opposite- I think Lily's Pam is kindhearted, hardworking, and endearing. I felt physically ill while she was being questioned during her deposition.
Each actor in this series is absolutely perfect for their role, with Nick Offerman especially delightful as Rand's (Seth Rogen's) skuzzy partner.
This show is nothing less than brilliant and as a xennial who remembers this from the tabloid reader's perspective, every minute of it is a delight, though I'm heartbroken for Pamela Anderson. She deserved better from all of us.
I Am Shauna Rae (2022)
Hooked
Shauna's experiences are fascinating. I have a friend with dwarfism so I'm familiar with the struggles of that condition in general, but Shauna's particular situation is just so rare.
The show starts out slow, just letting you get to know Shauna and her family members (SPOILERS in this paragraph): the sister she's jealous of, the supportive tomboy sister, the overprotective mom, the fun stepdad. And we get to see Shauna's day to day struggles: being carded everywhere, being stopped by police because she's not in a car seat, being dependent on family members), what she does to counteract those handicaps (vaping, tattoos, makeup, dressing more adult). Some of those actions have consequences for her family (her mother is given nasty looks if Shauna's got too much makeup on in public).
**END SPOLIERS**
At the end of the third episode now, we're starting to get into the unique struggles in Shauna's dating life. This is so fascinating, to imagine yourself in her position, and in her potential boyfriends' position... it's very complicated, obviously. I hope they begin to explore this more in depth and with as much honesty and authenticity as Shauna is capable of giving the world.
I imagine these first few episodes are going to be a little more awkward as Shauna and her family get used to the cameras. By the end of episode 3 I can see Shauna beginning to relax so I'm optimistic about the rest of the season.
Shauna comes across as gorgeous, interesting, and fun. I'm rooting for her career on the screen because I think in addition to her fascinating story, she's genuinely fun to watch. Hopefully she remains open, honest, and authentic, rather than going the hokey route with bachelorette-type spin-offs and the like. But I'm betting on Shauna - she's too good for that, and I think she knows it. She's kind of a bad**s. That's what I think makes this show really special and why I will definitely keep watching.
(Tip for anyone new looking to see if this show is for them: wait and binge it. It's really binge-worthy and I'm so bummed I have to wait every week for the next episode!)
Fred: The Movie (2010)
Ignore the poor reviews
The Fred movies are pure art. People just don't get it. I get it, Fred. I get it.
Riverdale (2017)
WTF, Netflix?
They cancelled The OA but keep making this garbage? Ridiculous.
