Healed (2023)
Super clever low budget flick
I watched this indie after seeing a critics review on Film Threat. I'm always searching for new LGBT films was honestly surprised by how clever and relevent the story was. It was a pleasent mix of Black Mirror and Get Out with an LGBT lead story.
The actors were well chosen and I thought the lead couple had really realistic chemistry. I got a real kick seeing Guinevere Turner in the role of an evil doctor. Although I guess it's not too much of a stretch from how evil her character Gabby Devoe was on the L Word!
The film had the same pitfalls as all low budget Indies. The budget is small, locations, minimal and story limited because of all those things. But once you get past that there is a clever story being told and I really like it.
The Color Purple (2023)
Performances were exceptional but story felt a little clunky
Definitely worth the watch. The performances by the lead cast was exceptional. Could not be more impressed by Fantasia's performance. Not surprising considering she has lived in this character for so long in the broadway version. I was shocked to read about the struggle Taraji P Hensen during the casting process. Her performance was outstanding and I can't imagine anyone else bringing the grit she brought to the role.
I loved the musical and was really excited to see it translated to screen. Unfortunately, I felt a little disappointed by the clunkiness of the transitions in and out of musical numbers.
But overall the powerfulness of this story shines through.
