Por un puñado de besos (2014)
Thought provoking
I'm giving this movie the highest rating because I think it deserves it, regarding the topic it presents. The story portrays very well the people "on the other side", their problems and dreams, what they hope for, how they live their daily lives, and it's portrayed so subtly and tastefully.
The story has some cliche moments but they are allowed in the movie with this thematic.
Also I thought the moment where the guy admits he is not positive, and the shock and dissapointent of the girl presents the "turning of tables" and perspectives on who is bad, labeled etc.
At the end, film shows the complexity of lives of people with this desease and what they go through. The last decision of the guy was tough but very touching, and shows that we shouldn't always discriminate, and should look at the bigger picture.
American Psycho (2000)
Grotesque story, lots of hidden meanings a masterpiece in disguise
After watching it I was left somewhat confused and without the needed catharsis, but that's exactly how this movie should make you feel. It depicts excellently the superficiality of high working-class society, their immersion in vanity, the outside looks, possessions, but how actually they're all completely the same, that they even confuse one another amongst themselves.
The main character is supposed to be a psycho at night, but my theory is that he adopted this identity in order to fill the massive void and deceit he feels like his everyday life is based on.
He thinks that he is detached from humanity, but actually he is just a reflection of everyone else around him, he is a reflection of a world to whom he thinks he wants to belong, but finds himself only in a swirl of constant competition, lies, and complete absence of empathy, any kind of reaction actually, even after admitting his crimes to his lawyer who characterizes them as a joke and doesn't want to listen to him any further.
He is a reflection of a world where being human is actually boring and self-absorbed, that he needs something else to escape that very emptiness of such world, that he thinks he's only wearing a human-mask to hide his true psycho identity, whereas he could be wearing a psycho-mask to hide the inhuman identity of the whole world.
There is no exit, his confession means nothing, there is no catharsis, he is trapped inside his own pain, twisted desires, and ultimately, a world that doesn't care.
Past Lives (2023)
Kind of empty
The idea is good and relatable because we all had that love from childhood whom we wish to reconnect with. The story came out somewhat plain, it could have been more interesting with more drama, more action, more cliches even, this way it seemed a little forced, their reconnection and all of their moments.
The film is okay though, in terms of pushing you to think about destiny and what it really is and does it even exist, or are our connections just random events or products of nostalgia and forced desire to feel that very destiny (to be part of in-yun).
After watching I feel like both of her relationships seemed tired and forced, and she could have felt more in-yun if she hadn't forced anything or thought about what could have been, meaning she should have given up on her school-days sweetheart and not tried to evoke some old feelings, and get carried away with childish fantasies (that applies to both of the Korean) and dedicate herself to her husband who felt somewhat unloved. The way it turned out everyone was left hurt.
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Incredible piece of art
I enjoyed it from the first minute to the end, this movie speaks to our "inner" selves and our soul. The atmosphere of the movie resonated with me very nicely, it is a dream-like atmosphere, with beautiful landscapes interwoven with a strange feeling of nostalgia. It has a nice balance of dramatic events and calmness allowing us to rest and reflect on what happened, connecting it to our personal experiences and feelings at the same time. The plot and all the characters have a lot of symbolism, and I believe everyone can relate to certain aspects of the story, and find comfort in this gentle and touching piece.
