Signs (2002)
Merrill swings
In short: A modern 50ies B-Movie.
Nothing new or special from Mr. M. Night. This one doesn't even has a "surprise ending." But despite big obvious plot holes (Why on earth do they stay in the house? Why do the ***** suddenly leave?) far better than most films out this summer.
Avoid ANY plot details (hell, try to forget this comment!) before you see the Signs...
War Photographer (2001)
If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough...
Stunning, shocking and beautiful, a "Pflicht-Film" about war photography and it's leading lenser James Nachtwey.
Originally commissioned for Swiss television, this documentary by Christian Frei may be hard to track down, but it might be one of the most memorable films you will ever see. More user comments probably will say "this film is not for the squeamish," but what we see here is the real-life inferno of war and poverty. And if you have never been subject to war and poverty you HAVE to see (Nachtwey's) photography, which demonstrates what the human race is capable of and what it looks like...
Der Boxprinz (2002)
The Life and Times of Norbert Grupe
A stunning documentary about Norbert Grupe better known as Prinz Wilhelm von Homburg. But Grupe is far from being aristocracy by any stretch of term (see summary of pic above) ! Possibly best known for his uncanny role as 16th-century tyrant Vigo von Homburg Deutschendorf in "Ghostbusters 2", Grupe has a life story that is perhaps only rivaled by Jacques Mesrine.
If you enjoy documentaries in the vein of "Grey Gardens" or "Crumb", you will love "Der Boxprinz"...
