Bride Wars (2009)
Mediocre at Best
Honestly, how many angry bride movies can Hollywood come out with? I thought 27 Dresses had a pretty good plot, even though it was way way way predictable, the characters were likable and different. There were no strip club bachelor/bachelorette parties, no fights that left you hating both of the women in the movie, and some pretty good acting. However,in Bride Wars, Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway have reached a low point in their career, dreadfully overacting and dramatizing every little detail to the point of me losing interest. The three male leads were decent, but for the most part, left a lot to be desired. Their characters were somewhat shallow, possibly due to a predictable and weak screenplay and script. This reminded me too much of all the bride movies and over-hyped chick flicks of the past. When will Hollywood come out with another Notebook romance?
21 (2008)
Awesome Film
21 without a doubt, is worth having a look at. If you like anything like Ocean's Eleven or The Perfect Score, you will love this film. The actors aren't quite mainstream, but they're as good as it gets. And Kevin Spacey does an amazing job as the MIT professor. While it was quite the drama and adventure, 21 also had a few quick witty one-liners, but not enough to grow old or ruin the dialogue. The witticisms fit in with the script. And the camera sequences of Las Vegas! The views were breathtaking, and the casino scenes were amazing. This movie made me want to pack my bags and leave for Vegas on the first flight I could get. Anyone would like this film. And if not, well, to each his own.
Carrie (1976)
Best Adaptation of Any Stephen King
Carrie was a truly gripping movie to start this review off. It was amazing in nearly every aspect. I heard it was really good, and I enjoyed the book, but like most Stephen King adaptations, the movie sort of ruins the book for me. Since I really enjoyed Carrie as a book, I was reluctant to ever watch the movie until my aunt told me it was really good. She doesn't read the books, but she's good at telling what I'd like. So when I found it one day at a movie store for only eight bucks on DVD, I decided to get it. I got home and immediately loved it. It was amazing. From the shower scene to the ruined house scene, the movie was truly creepy and sometimes just all out scary. The acting was amazing, especially Piper Laurie as the crazed Christian lunatic mother. And what I think made me really go for this movie was that it stayed true to the book except for two parts, which were just as awesome if not better than the book. Carrie is a great movie for any horror or drama fan.
The Invisible (2007)
Not What You'd Expect, But Almost Better
The whole gist of the movie is that this "perfect" guy with a lot of teenage angst gets beaten within an inch of his life literally. Stuck in a limbo, he has to try to find out what is going on. I thought the commercials looked great. I rented this movie thinking I was going to get a great thriller with lots of action. Instead, I got a suspenseful ride that was more of a drama than anything. Even though it was very good with the supernatural suspense aspect, drama lovers will also like this movie. It toys with a lot of emotions from all different characters. The acting was phenomenal, especially Levieva, who plays the troubled Annie Newton. If you're the type that will cry at just about anything, you'll certainly cry at this, although it is not as sad as most. The characters played were very realistic and some of the things they were feeling hit very close to home with me. Of course, even if you're out of high school, this will certainly remind you of your younger days. It's very perceptive, and just about anyone will enjoy it.
Secret Window (2004)
Great Thrill Ride
I saw the trailer for this long before I was a Stephen King fan, and I thought it looked like a good movie, but I never could find it in the stores. Long after I became a King fan, I read the short story, fell in love with it, and looked for the movie again. Lucky me, I found it at Menards on the six dollar rack on video, and hell, it was only six dollars, so I bought it. I thought it was amazing. Johnny Depp could not have played Mort better than he did. The entire cast performed amazingly, hats off, and the movie itself was entirely fast paced and creepy. It held the suspense on until the very end, when it all went out with a huge bang that just left you begging for more. I seriously almost rewound it and watched it again.
The Shining (1980)
Great Scare That Will Leave You Sleepless
Like all Stephen King adaptations, the book was better. But to tell you the truth, I think they did one of the best jobs ever on this one. It scared me to death, and I had trouble sleeping. The monumental "Heeeeere's Johnny!" thing will never die. That was classic horror at it's best. Jack Nicholson is one of the best actors I've ever seen. He really pulled this off. I'm an actor, and believe it or not, a phsycopath like that is hard to pull off. But of course, being Jack Nicholson, he pulled it off and made you believe it. This movie will go down in history as one of the greatest horror movies of all time. You'll be sleeping with your lights on when you see this one.
Christine (1983)
Pretty Good
Being a huge Stephen King fan, I love his books and like the movie adaptations. Of course, none of them can really compare with the original works. Christine was the first Stephen King book I ever read, and still remains my favorite. The movie really did the book well. It didn't overdo the gore or anything. It was spooky, but also showed the deeper meaning of teenage obsession and the love story subplot. The acting was perfect. The only thing I didn't like was that there were a few main points that they left out that would have made the movie perfect. Other than that, I had no problem with it. Keith Gordon, I have to say, stole the show. He played an excellent Arnie, first being the wimpy nerd and then going to this complete bad ass greaser. I highly recommend this film to anyone who wants a good film, but isn't expecting too much out of it.
One Missed Call (2008)
Redefine's "Horror" Movie
Wow this movie really put horror in perspective for me. I was horrified through the whole thing. I was horrified at the cheesy acting, the weak story line, the undeveloped characters, and most of all, the special effects. I was terrified I was going to die of boredom. It never ended! It introduced characters at the last twenty minutes of the movie and then wrapped it all up...and then of course they started the horror all over again! The story didn't even make since! I knew when I saw the commercials that it was going to be terrible. Another thing that turned me off about the movie is that all of the American remakes of the Japanese horror films suck! The Japanese versions aren't that bad, but the American versions are awful! Take The Grudge and The Ring for example. That should put it out in fine print for you. Just don't see this movie. It's not worth it.
